329年，石勒踏平了“前赵”，终于能纵情驰骋在大平原，悠闲欣赏北国风光了，然而遥远的江南总是诱惑着他。

这一年他56岁了，来日无多的紧迫感，时时袭上心头。他下定决心，要完成人生的最后一个梦想：飞越长江。

三次进攻建康都失败

要进攻建康，一般都是从西边动手，先拿下荆州、江州，或者历阳，然后顺流而下。但是这一带的最高长官是陶侃，他横刀立马、威风凛凛站在长江边的身影，以及到处传播的英雄故事，让石勒失去了渡江的勇气。

江州曾经发生一次相互残杀的大案。“流民帅”郭默杀死江州刺史后，遭到陶侃讨伐，不战而降，当场被杀。

郭默在南方就是个无名小卒，然而墙内开花墙外香。他在北方大名鼎鼎，骁勇善战，千军万马中取上将首级，如探囊取物。石勒军队见到他就抖豁，如同遇到“关羽、张飞”。

石勒听说陶侃捉拿郭默，兵不血刃，像抓只小鸡一样简单。石勒无限感慨：陶侃真是名不虚传啊。

陶侃也不轻易向北方示兵，石勒对他如同当年对待祖逖一样：尊重和敬畏。

既然从西边毫无希望，只有改道从东边。
