The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840s by Irish immigrants fleeing their countrys potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.

The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a souls passage to heaven.

The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the trees trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. Jack made a deal with the devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let him down the tree.

According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer.

So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. 做完广播体操《希望风帆》,每个班级绕着操场开始进行长跑锻炼。我们班的同学排着整齐的队伍，沿着弧形白线跨开了步子。“一二一!一二一！”伴随着整齐的口号和运动音乐，同学们越跑越起劲，仿佛跑了步就能把所有的烦恼都抛到九霄云外一样。虽然人人脸上都洒满了汗珠，但我们丝毫没有表现出疲倦劳累的样子，反而还洋溢着愉悦的笑容。在跑步过程中，我心想：看来，长跑活动不但能缓解疲劳，而且能放松心情，真是一举两得呀！

一个烈日炎炎的夏天，我们在库布齐大沙漠举行了一次拔河比赛。

渐渐地，红布向我们靠拢了过来，马上就能看到胜利的希望了，让我们感到精力倍增，几乎用尽的力量也暴涨了起来。时间一分一秒地过去，绳子一会儿向前，一会儿后退，摇摆不定。

终于，在又一次努力下，我们胜利了。队员筋疲力尽地躺在沙地上，大口呼吸着空气，享受着这一份来之不易的成功喜悦。

最近，体育老师公布了一个令我们愁眉不展的消息：六一回来排球考试，垫十下为优秀。对于我这样的垫球新手，十下真比登天还难，这次就等着考“不及格”了。

可注意点也似乎没起到什么作用，情况反而比刚才更糟了。这回，球被扔上去后，竟然不偏不倚，正好“跳”到了我头上，不过更惨的还在后头呢，球攻击了我后，连蹦带跳地逃走了，开始“游操场”。它“游”的地方正是我不敢随意靠近的地方，太危险了，因为那些玩“撕名牌”的男生横冲直撞，目中无人，闯入十有八九被撞个半死，但它已经进入了“危险区域”，离那些玩得正疯的男生近在咫尺，此时，已经到了他们的脚下，他们见状，随便来了个“一脚头”，“飞球1号”被推进器推到了空中，划了一道优美的弧线，又开始蹦跳旅行。它这次又没长眼儿，只听“砰”的一声，撞到了一个男生。他敏捷地转过身来，抓住了我的手，我束手无策，只好连声说对不起，这才获得了自由。
