20__年10月6日晚上，我阅读了一本《平凡的世界》却是五彩斑斓的，有悲有喜，有贫有福、有苦有乐，有情有义，在一片茫茫的黄土之上，一群普通通的劳苦大众不断克服社会潮流的影响创造出属于自己的新生活。如果说时代的大背景能影响无数千千万万个体的命运，却总有那么几个顽强的灵魂不断的突破上天的限制，战胜自我，突破束缚，克服灵魂中最懦弱的一面，打开一扇不同凡响的大门。读完此书，豁然开朗，给予灵魂一次全新的洗礼。体谅家庭、感悟善良、懂得勤劳，明白责任，相信爱情，一幕幕都是故事，何尝又不是对我们生活的指引。

家是温暖的岸，而岸堤的基石是善。善人者，人亦善之。不管是少安还是少平，他们都是淳朴善良的人，也正是因为他们的良善，好运一直伴随在他们的身边。如果说家庭之间的相互帮助因为血缘关系，但是对邻居以及陌生人的包容理解与帮助，那就是善良最直观的体现。少安在砖厂效益还不是特别的好的时候，能帮助村民的，尽量去帮助村民;少平遇到小翠被欺压的时候，用自己全部的家当协助她脱离;王世才在煤矿底下，勇敢的用生命挽救下工友;润叶在洪水当中，奋不顾身跃入洪水猛兽当中挽救另外一个小生命。这一切，让我们看到淳朴的劳动者，善良并不是他们的天性，却是他们的选择。当他们做出这一选择的时候，其实他们已经脱离农民阶层的历史局限性，因为善良而让灵魂得到升华。

“只有劳动才可能使人在生活中强大。不论什么人，最终还是要崇尚那些能用双手创造生活的劳动者”，在本书当中，推动故事发展最重要的一个因子就是勤劳。因为勤劳，贫困家庭经济面貌得到了巨大的改变;因为勤劳，少平的知识水平与日俱增;因为勤劳，每个人的生活都焕发出新的生机。勤劳并不是投机取巧，而是一步一个脚步去打拼自己的生活，尽管在故事当中，每一个都仅仅只有一个改变自己生活的信念，他们不知道具体改变的方法也不知道要如何才能做的很完美，但是他们都会认真坚持去做到完善。砖厂、鱼塘、养蜂、运输、挖煤都是一些很普通的不能再普通的工作，可是这一群人，能把这些普通的工作做到极致的完美。而反观我们的“二流子”王满意，满脑子的投机取巧最终也只能落得一个碌碌无为靠妻子终老。勤劳是我们最美好的品质，世界会亏待很多人，但是永远也不会放弃一个勤劳的人，而能够改变命运改变生活的，最终也是勤勤恳恳兢兢业业而不是投机取巧。在一天又一天单调而又重复的生活当中，积累财富，创造价值，最终改天换地，这就是劳动人民勤劳的力量。

如果说家庭、善良、勤劳仅仅是因个体而体现出来的感人精神，那么责任是全篇最为动容的一条主线。何谓责任，就是田福军在意识形态主导生产的时候仍然坚持实事求是;何谓责任，就是乔书记亲临基层第一线跑遍各县区，挤上公交车去体验平民疾苦;何谓责任，就是孙家兄弟在自己发家致富的同时，也给予身边的人正能量并且帮助他们不断的脱贫致富。责任就是一个人的担当，来源于内心深处强烈的社会使命感和荣辱观，就如少安在村中修学校就是最好的表现。在我们生活的圈子当中，活着不只是为自己，也是为了改变我们生存的环境。这个世界并没纯粹的乐土，有的更多的是如何把自己生存的环境建设成了一片乐土，这就叫责任。对社会，对家庭，对生活，唯有热爱，才会由心而生的滋生出对家国最美的情怀。

也不能否认，爱情的故事是感人的，他给予人改变未来的力量，遇到更好自己的信念。《平凡的世界》当中，大部分的爱情故事都以遗憾而结束，但是在这些幸运与不幸的故事当中，人性因此而升华。少安的爱情是凄美而幸福的，凄美于与润叶的错过，幸福于与秀莲的厮守;少平的爱情是悲痛的，突破世俗相知相爱却不能相守，最终阴阳两隔;润叶的爱情最终是感人的，生活中的变故是润滑剂，让她明白生命的意义与生活的价值从而成长;金波与青海姑娘、润生与红梅的爱情故事是大胆而热烈的，他们完完全全的突破的世俗的眼光，去追求自己的幸福;而杜丽丽却是值得唾弃与鄙夷的，“浪漫主义精神”指引人热情奔放，由心而发，可从来没有教人如何在生活中违背家庭伦理道德，家庭的解体纯粹的是自我作贱。那么美好的爱情应当是什么样子呢?首先应当是真诚的，彼此的真诚是两个灵魂走到一起的基础条件;其次应当是大胆的，爱没有理由，世俗有很多条条框框的不成文的规定，而真正的爱情却可以突破所有的限制;最后，爱是建立在吸引之上的一种付出，每个人都有自己的个性，但是当他们遇到那个人的时候，慢慢的就开始改变，也许最初的并不是一定是非常正确，但是因为爱给予改变的力量让最初的选择变得越来越正确。全书所有感情故事，幸福的爱情表现形式只有一种，理解、懂得、陪伴、支持、付出，而不幸的却千奇百怪。这何尝又不是人生百态，各种酸甜苦辣的直观体现呢?在爱的世界里，没有对与错，更没有理性与因果，灵魂的流露就叫真情。

几年前，无意间在一个友人的书架上看见了一本书——《平凡的世界》、作者路遥。《平凡的世界》，好特殊的名字呀，一下子就吸引了我。听友人讲这本书就说了四个字——值得一看。后来因为种。种原因，一只没有机会翻开这本书，虽然几个月前，花了自己的零花钱买下了这本书，也因为一些考试什么的，一只没有机会翻开。

一个多月前，终于顺利从学校毕业了，因为一些事情就没有急着找工作，才终于翻开了这本书。近800页的书，花了我近一个月的时间，才看完它。不愧是矛盾文学奖的获得者!

路遥《平凡的世界》10年的内容，让我一个月看完了，在这一个月里，我随着主人公的生活变化，我的心情也在变化。曾多时，看过了不知道多少本书，也没有让我流下这同情的泪水。进一个月，看了这《平凡的世界》，让我哭过多少次，我已记不清楚了，只记得：为了生活，为了将来，人真的身不由己!

“只有不丧失普通劳动者的感觉，我们才有可能把握社会历史进程的主流，才有可能创造出真正有价值的艺术品。”路遥的这句话说的非常的经典，没有真实的经历，怎么可能创造如此感人的作品。对了，应该说是真正有价值的艺术品。

“在我们都是小孩子的时候，一个人和一个人可能有家庭条件的区别，但孩子们本身的差别并不明显。可一旦长大了，每个人的生活道路会有多大的差别呀，有点甚至是天壤之别!”这句话说的多么的有道理啊!放眼今天的社会，什么官二代，什么富二代等等，我们和他们，在人生起跑线上已经不同了，他们的道路是平坦的，而我们则是弯曲的，就如那抛物线一样，转了一个好大的弯，才有可能走向正轨。就拿今天的建筑市场来讲，一切的实习、工作前提，是钱与关系。会不会不要紧，只要有钱有关系，什么都好说!

悲夫!无数千里马埋没在这可怜的世界中，空有日行千里，纵然伯乐不存!

当我看到孙少安和孙少平兄弟俩，为了自己的生活而在最底层的拼搏时，让我同情，让我感叹!对于自己喜欢的人而没有勇气去追求那份幸福，让我伤心，家庭的差距也破坏了那本是幸福的恋人。最后选择有不同的生活。后来孙少安变成了老板，手里有了钱，他并不是自己一个人的贪用，而是拿出了自己的一部分财产，把村里的破学校修好了，失去了一部分小财，留下了一世的美名。这让想起了我在学校时的一位老师，拿出自己的一部分工资资助贫困的学生上学，这是何等的美德啊!可当今的富豪如此之多，又有几人如此?不过是享受那奢华的生活罢了!

不管怎么说，《平凡的世界》真的是——值得一看!虽然写的是1985年之前的事情，但对于今天的社会，仍然是那么的相似。以后若有机会，可再而观之!

读路遥《平凡的世界》让我想起一个小故事，在看完最后他写的后记里面的那句“只能永远把艰辛的劳动看作是生命的必要;即使没有收获的指望，也心平气静地继续耕种。”我更是有此感想：庄稼无收年年种。

首先简单说说我看完之后的小结，《平凡的世界》我国著名作家路遥的经典代表作，里面主要描述了在中国70年代中期到80年代中期近十年间的广阔背景下，当代城乡社会生活。当中艰苦奋斗的劳动与曲折无奈的爱情、无数次的挫折与永不放弃的追求、无法想象的痛苦与每次成功的欢乐、日常生活与巨大社会冲突纷繁地交织在一起，让我边读边哭、边读边笑。其中最主要是以孙少安和孙少平两兄弟为中心，以及在双水村的大家伙，于生活中林林总总的复杂的矛盾纠葛，刻画了当时社会各阶层众多普通人的形象，极度深刻地展示了普通人在大时代历史进程中所走过的艰难曲折的道路。

无论是孙家两兄弟曲折的奋斗史和凄美婉转的爱情故事，还是少安和田村书记他们干部之间的政治斗争和期间的尔虞我诈，都让我压抑于心而难以言表。但是他们俩兄弟的每一次受挫后重振的那股精气神，让我越读越有一股熊熊热火燃烧于胸，生命满希望，坚持不懈是王道!而读完小说之后，孙家两兄弟的每一个小故事都不时出现在我脑海中，那样的热血那样的催人奋进。那是因为他们告诉了我一个道理，即使生活给了你一击左勾拳，别泄气，爬起来继续作战，只要每一次都勇敢站起来，就总有战胜的一天;即使黄河今年满上滩淹了庄稼，别伤心别放弃，只要年年都种庄稼，天灾人祸也好，总有一天会有收成。

孙少平他从一名高中毕业生到成为一名煤矿工人，其间经历了波澜壮阔的人生历程。虽经历层层磨难，但他平凡的一生里面处处绽放着光辉，一部简单的家族史被他改写得充满意义。在高中学习期间，让他感到最痛苦的是由于贫困而给自尊心所带来的伤害，就连吃饭都少了该有的尊严。然而他学习刻苦，心怀远大的理想，到后来去了煤矿，他依然秉承艰苦奋斗的精神，通过劳动取得受人仰视的成绩，得到大家的认同。同时他又具有现代意识，时时不忘学习，能文能武，这使他赢得了田晓霞的爱情。虽然他们俩的爱情以悲剧结束了，但他最终仍然能承受所有的一切，勇敢真诚地面对生活。孙少平就是路遥在小说里面塑造的一个精神斗士，在平凡的世界里面，始终以奋斗不息、坚韧不拔精神活着，无论面对何种挫折，他都能平静地接受，对生活充满了希望。

另外我还想讲一下少平的大哥，那位 13岁就辍学帮家里忙的孙少安“能人”。他不仅年幼就和父亲一起支撑着那个风雨飘摇的家，并且在18岁那年被推选为双水村生产队长，弟妹俩也正是在他的庇护下才得以完成学业，姐姐一家也因此能够勉强度日。但是生活总跟他过不去，曾几何时，痛苦、烦恼、迷茫在他的内心象洪水一般泛滥。但他不屈服于命运精神让我每每肃然起敬，虽说家里的贫穷落后生活不济，他从未对家其厌恶或嫌弃。即使田书记整天算计着他，但是他任然挺下去，一心一意为人民服务，为双水村贡献自己的一份力。他是一个责任感令人起敬的爷们!他不仅肩负起了养家的担子，还在自己第一次创业时，招揽全村村民到自己的砖厂上工，以及慷慨捐资助学。虽然说“一切都太苦了，太沉重了，他简直不能再承受生活如此的重压。”但是他以乐观的心态和宽广的胸襟面对着生活给予他的一切磨难，顽强的意志和坚韧的毅力使他度过了一道道艰难的坎。这个负重前行的跋涉者，我从头到尾陪着他走过了一遍生活这条路，其中的痛苦难耐，真的不是一般人能有的，在一次次的挫败下任然能翻身而起，又一次次的艰苦奋斗不懈努力，这种毅力不仅影响了那一代人，那同时也是对每一阶段的每一个读者的鼓舞啊!

无疑孙家两位男主人翁给我留下了很深刻的印象，他们告诉我人只要活着，就要努力“劳动”，艰苦奋斗一生，即使生活一片黑暗也要坚信未来一片光明。就像路遥说的那样，至少我们曾真诚而充满激情地在这个世界上生活过，竭尽全力地劳动过，并不计代价地将自己的血汗献给了不死的人类之树。在我们这个飞速发展的新时代里面，时代变迁而精神始终不变，每当我们受到挫折遇到困难的时候，都应该秉承老一代那种吃苦耐劳的精神。我相信在往后的日子里面，少安好平都会在我耳边不停地提醒我，不管事情的结果如何，只要永远把艰辛的劳动看作是生命的必要，艰苦奋斗，生活会在最后关头给予你一个大大的微笑。

就像那个小故事里面讲的，虽然在黄河边的田地时刻都有被淹的可能，但是我还记老父亲说的那一段话：“出汗不一定打粮食，可打粮食一定要出汗。今年淹了还有下年，下年淹了还有下下年。我们是庄稼人，庄稼无收也要年年种，总有能收成的时候。”从路遥笔下的由孙家两兄弟为典型代表的老一辈身上，从我一页页翻过的曲折跌宕的故事里面，我读懂了一个人生的哲学就是：在生活里面，即使没有收获的指望，也应该坚持不懈地努力，相信生活前路一片光明，然后心平气静地继续年年耕种。

我花了一周的时间，看完《平凡的世界》这部洋洋洒洒110万字的小说。读后感悟颇深，如果要一语概之，那便是“它教会了我生活，使我懂得生活是一场光荣的奋斗”。

话说回来，《平凡的世界》仅仅是一部小说，本是虚幻的，却教会了我如何现实地生活;而现实中的故事，本来是真实的，却让我生活在了理想主义的世界里。

小说中描绘的孙少平、孙少安、田润叶、田晓霞、孙玉婷、王满银等等人物，都是现实中不值得一提的小角色，如果他们生活在峨山县塔甸镇，我打包票，他们的故事连峨山新闻都上不了!但是经过伟大作家路遥的包装，这些小人物的故事顿时焕发出了活力，让全国人民都好奇去了解他们，并去为他们爱恨情仇欢笑和哭泣。我们都有这样一种悲哀：宁可花很多的时间去关注明星鸡毛蒜皮的小事，也不愿腾出一刻钟来走进身边平凡人的世界。可是路遥不同，他做到了后者，于是他把小人物们的故事写成书，名字叫《平凡的世界》。直到看完这本书后，我才惊叹，“原来平凡的世界也可以这样精彩!”

而与此不同的是，在现实世界里，每天的新闻、电视上播出的总是那些可以改变世界的人，那些伟大的政治家、商人、艺术家、体育明星等等。无处不在的媒体给人造成了这样一种错觉：只有像电视里这些人一样生活那才有意义。于是，多少人带着青春的热血与激情拼命地奋斗着，麻木了现实世界中的喜怒哀乐，只为有朝一日也能像自己的偶像一样生活。但当他们被生活的担子压得直不起腰时，终究会在现实面前低下高贵的头颅。以我为例，刚毕业时过得像《中国合伙人》一样，而今却只能躺在沙发上唱《稳稳的幸福》。

是残酷现实摧毁了我心中的那座名叫理想的大厦，让我明白了所谓新闻不过是肥皂剧的一类，看着很激情，但是对现实生活却鲜有指导意义。同时，是《平凡的世界》一书，在我心中理想大厦坍塌的废墟上重建了一座名叫现实的大厦，让我试着体会到了平凡生活中的不平凡和伟大。

全书读下来，给我印象最深的人物是少平，因为我跟他有很多的共同点。我们都是出身于普通的家庭，毕业后都不想回家乡而执意要去外面闯荡，他去了黄原而我去了上海。他在黄原做揽工，我在上海是做电话销售，两人都是生活在社会最底层的廉价劳动力。然后我们发现闯荡世界可不是那么容易，又累收入又低，于是便想到了进入体制内，结果他抓出契机成为了铜城煤矿正式编制的工人，而我也毫不逊色通过考试成为了塔甸政府的公务员。铜城和塔甸，是两个边远的地方，与我们理想的生活地有很大的差距，但是经过短暂的调整我们都适应了，我们觉得“总比外面有上顿没下顿的干要好，反正这里收入又高又稳定”。虽然环境艰苦，我们却都不忘记通过读书来提高自己，我们也不想被环境同化，于是立下了目标：他想考煤炭技术学校，而我想考MPA……

就是这么一个和我的人生有如此多共同点的少平，看书的时候，我多么希望他在故事的最后有一个完满的归宿：来到大城市，过上好生活，要么当大官，要么赚大钱。但是全书看完了，我还是没能等到那一天的到来。我真想提醒路遥，这可不是小说男一号该有的结局啊!但是缓过来一想，谁叫这本书的名字偏偏叫“平凡的世界”而非“不平凡的世界”呢，所以我也只好认了。

虽然故事的最后少平依旧很平凡，但是相信读过这本书的朋友定会有这样一种感触：尽管少平只是平凡世界中的平凡的一员，家境不好，学问不高，既不当官，也没赚大钱，但是他拥有一颗强大的内心，他执着于自己的理想，对家庭负责，对工作负责，对身边的人友善，他在生活中表现出来的那种坚毅，坚毅中的洒脱已经很不平凡了，会使每个与他接触的人获得满满的正能量。

我们都有各式各样的目标，也都朝这个目标奋斗着，但是最终能实现目标的人又有几个?或许我最终依旧很平凡，但是我也想在平凡的生活中表现得不平凡，就像书中的孙少平一样，用自己的坚毅和洒脱给身边的人传递积极生活的正能量。或许我的一生都得在奋斗，永远过不上自己理想的生活，但是这又有什么可怕呢?生活本来就是一场奋斗。

Ps.大学毕业时我选择去上海，如今当上公务员了，我又梦寐想去北京。看完《平凡的世界》，才发现无论当初的上海还是现在的北京，对于我来说都是不成熟考虑。目前我只想多看一些书，让自己的内心沉淀透了，才能制定出真正适合自己的人生规划。

做一个出色的“煤矿工人”。孙少平如愿的成为了煤炭工人，在他成为正式的煤炭工人前也有一点小插曲，也许是太过于重视这次机会，孙少平在体检时血压过高，虽然还能再复查一次但孙少平还是很紧张怕复查时再出问题，那他就当不成工人，改变不了他农民的身份，这种情况大多数人都会遇到，当遇到一个改变自己命运的机会时会不自觉的为自己设置障碍，本来不会出问题的小事就变成阻碍自己的拦路虎。孙少平找到了检查的医生，希望她能帮帮忙放他一马，医生告诉他不要紧张，若是真担心就喝醋降血压。最后孙少平血压降低，成了正式的煤炭工人。刚到煤矿时孙少平和同伙比起来是寒酸的，没有被褥，穿着破烂，而且是纯粹的农家子弟，其他人基本上是干部的子弟(因为中国的户籍制度随母)，他们看不上孙少平，但是孙少平靠着吃苦耐劳靠着劳动成为他们当中的“阔佬”，在劳动面前人人平等，人们靠着劳动赢得他人的尊重。

命运弄人，生活应该继续。田晓霞死了，在洪灾中为了救助更年轻的生命死了，她死亡后孙少平痛苦不堪，他的痛苦也让读者身同体会，也感到命运弄人，田晓霞如此完美无暇的女子居然红颜薄命，她的善良和正义，巾帼不让须眉，她和少平的爱情自然也无法圆满了，但她一直活在少平的心里，指引着少平前进。少平为缓解痛苦拼命的劳动，他的悍劲和勤劳让他在工人里很有威信，矿上升他为班长，他对待手下智慧又体贴，还解决了矿上秋收季节矿工出勤率低的问题，果然金子是会发亮的，一个勤劳又上进的人在哪里都能发出耀眼的光芒。他和惠英嫂同病相怜，都失去了爱人，他没事就去帮惠英嫂做家务，在嫂子家他感到温暖和踏实。孙少安也历经波折后东山再起，兰香和吴仲平的关系也被吴家所承认，一切都在朝着好的方面发展。田福军到省里后也很快的展示出他的才能，他没有在巨大的管理困难前退缩也没有在丧女之痛中消沉，他不断的解决着老百姓的切身问题，辛勤的处理着政务，他应是所有从政者的榜样，百姓有这样的父母官是幸运的。

我奋力的读完了这本长篇巨著，但不知是年龄大了还是对于感情没有那么多感受了，对于脉脉温情的故事我确实读不太来，反而对现实主义题材的书能读进去几分，特别是平凡的世界里对农村在“十三中”全会前后的思想、生活、文化、政治的相关描述让我相见恨晚，只想说自己为什么不早读，通过这些对农村认识更深，农村的确是广阔的天地，正如书中所说精人、能人多如星斗，感觉全书都很赞扬劳动，劳动能让一个平凡人获得尊严，通过劳动、坚持和奋斗能够改变命运。孙家从一个烂包的家到全公社甚至全县赞扬，真是30年河东，30年河西。里面也塑造了一些正面的领导干部当然也描述了一些领导干部的政治生活，得以让我等小民窥见一二。在我心中这是一部最好的现实主义小说没有之一。里面的有些道理还值得我去细细的品味，对于我们这些普通人、这些平凡人应该采用怎样的态度去过完自己的一生。正如书中所述“生活中真正的勇士向来默默无闻，喧哗不止的永远是自视高贵的一群”这是一种低调的人生态度，不求他人关注，不求他人认同，只求默默的朝着自己目标前进，犹如那朝圣的人一样在沙漠中朝着圣地行进。

寒假，我读了高尔基的自传体小说《童年》，它给我的感触颇深。

它向我们艺术地展示了阿廖沙在黑暗社会追求光明的奋斗历程，还有十九世纪七十到八十年代的俄国社会风貌。3岁的时候，父亲病故，母亲就带阿廖沙回了娘家。可惜外公是个自私而又专横的小业主，但是资本主义俄国的发展打断了外公发财的好梦，从此破产以至于贫困潦倒。可怜的母亲改嫁之后，生病而死，十一岁的作者被外公残忍地赶出了家门，到社会上自谋生路……其实，阿廖沙的原型就是高尔基本人，高尔基借阿廖沙这个人物来描述自己的童年。高尔基用真实优美的文笔描述了自已苦难而令人难以置信童年。

我们现在丰衣足食，要什么有什么，又是父母的“掌上明珠”、“心肝宝贝”哪能和高尔基那悲惨的童年相提并论，年代的不同就是这差别，一个是天堂，一个是地狱；一个充满阳光，一个到处黑暗。我们现在的童年来之不易啊！童年充满着欢乐，童年到处是温暖，童年是值得回忆的相机，童年爱满心窝！而高尔基的童年除了一些教育和友谊，没有什么再值得回忆！

Published in 1847, WUTHERING HEIGHTS was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemned it as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural--and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her only novel was a failure. It was not until 1850, when WUTHERING HEIGHTS received a second printing with an introduction by Emilys sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back. Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature.

Even so, WUTHERING HEIGHTS continues to divide readers. It is not a pretty love story; rather, it is swirling tale of largely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. It is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant. And yet--it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense of tremendous pity and great loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written.

The novel is told in the form of an extended flashback. After a visit to his strange landlord, a newcomer to the area desires to know the history of the family--which he receives from Nelly Deans, a servant who introduces us to the Earnshaw family who once resided in the house known as Wuthering Heights. It was once a cheerful place, but Old Earnshaw adopted a "Gipsy" child who he named Heathcliff. And Catherine, daughter of the house, found in him the perfect companion: wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she. But although Catherine loves him, even recognizes him as her soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. She instead marries another, and in so doing sets in motion an obsession that will destroy them all.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS is a bit difficult to "get into;" the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end result of this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting. But they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable structures in all of literature, a story that circles upon itself in a series of repetitions as it plays out across two generations. Catherine and Heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel, and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound the other.

As the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction, and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge it gathers into a ghostly tone: Heathcliff, driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in every part of his world--dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutality not for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade, so that she may never leave his mind until death itself. Yes, this is madness, insanity, and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond.

It is a stunning novel, frightening, inexorable, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe. Even if you do not like it, you should read it at least once--and those who do like it will return to it again and again.
