他常说：“勤俭节约是治国治家的大计，也是做人的根本。”他的节约可真是时时事事、点点滴滴，简直让人觉得他有点小气抠门。

就说吃吧，他从来不让人掉一粒米，一块馍。谁将饭菜掉在饭桌上，他都要严肃地说：“锄禾日当午，汗滴禾下土，谁知盘中餐，粒粒皆辛苦。粮食是农民辛勤劳动换来的，必须捡起来吃了。”

吃菜他也不让把菜汤倒掉，总是冲上开水当汤喝，还给他的汤起了一个好听的名字，叫多味复合冲剂。

奶奶是五十年代参加工作的医务人员，爷爷说当年的孩子们都叫她白脸阿姨。现在奶奶仍然是面庞白净，头发黑亮，很精神。奶奶人勤快，心善良，讲究穿衣，吃饭单调，是个地地道道的吃面奶奶。一日三餐，只要有面吃她就心满意足了。奶奶吃面特别简单，不管是拉面、擀面、擦面、拨面，只要放上西红柿酱就是好面，不用炒菜下饭，吃得有滋有味，即使剩下的面也照吃不误，还说热热再吃的面和回锅肉一样，更香。

对奶奶来说，吃饭没面不行，记得有一次二姑请我们吃烤鸭，要了一桌好菜，奶奶说：“这菜油不大对口味。”最后还是给她专门要了一碗面条，才算吃饭，弄得大家哄堂大笑，奶奶却说各人有各人的吃法，谁也不能强加于人嘛！由于爷爷奶奶的特殊表现，我给他们起了个名号：“节约爷爷”和“吃面奶奶”。
