The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is called the "Ten thousand Ii Great Wall" in Chinese. In fact, it s more than 6 000 kilometres long. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period, more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the dif ferent parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire, Emperor Qin Shi Huang had all the walls joined up. Thus, the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers, where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."

爷爷去年才退休，当时的他已经六十岁了。这一年，我觉得对于他来说，绝不平凡，不只是因为他到了花甲，更重要的是，一般学校的退休年龄，老死不过50，而爷爷硬是到了60岁才退休。超负荷的运转10年中，爷爷虽然把近视眼镜换成了老花镜，但十年“电光影”，十年他的学生高考第一，值得一提的是，他的班在接手前全是倒数第一。

爷爷从小爱学习，不经了解，我还不知道他小时候是一个“画地为纸”，“点树成笔”的人。爷爷硬是靠着一股想要当老师的“蛮劲”苦读十几春秋，一朝成名去了当时当地最好的中学。恰逢某名牌大学一位时运不济的大学生刘也来到这个学校。在名牌大学昂扔了四年，毕业后却到了小镇蹲着，难免攒了一腔不平之气，刘的数学课讲得散漫随心，有一堂课竟旁若无人的拖了二十分钟，直逼下节语文课要上课的爷爷敲门示意，却毫无入耳，逼得台下学生偷着笑。刚要下课，爷爷突然一个手势，说：“等一等，你的最后一题方程有问题。”然后跨上讲台，接过粉笔写了起来，半分钟后，一个组成的方程跃然板上。爷爷边讲边写，其条理之清楚，算数之准确，让人无不瞪大了眼睛，讲台下传出一片“噢”声后，爷爷满意地点了点头，就连大学生刘也是一幅慒懂初醒的表情。爷爷随后转身将粉笔递给了刘，说：“台下十年功，台上三分钟，讲台上的时间是很保贵的。”

有人说过：“上爷爷的课是一种享受，有点儿美好的感觉。”爷爷并不是“就这论这”，比如说，一个公式，例如圆形面积公式，他只会告诉学生关于的所有东西和“一周内全班想通过有每个人的物质奖励”，虽然头次这样面临家长控诉和教学进度慢的双重重大问题，但当成绩出来时，爷爷又把礼物一个个说清楚送了回去，只说：“如果真想感谢我，何不给孩子饨点肉，毕竟孩子身体最重要。”

爷爷的思想观念接近现代老师，开放、活力中不失严肃。爷爷也教过语文，追求“愈放开愈妙而愈真。”要求学生作文时大胆想象，思想开放，就连一篇作文要想全部通过必须“满浆红”。为此，一个学生本子上可能除去标点外，每格都有红印。某学生的本子上有这么几句语“春天到了，”爷爷给批语，“不确切。”打下去重写，学生略略思索，重写一句“春，不淡不重地来了，花，饱满深情地笑了。”爷爷还是不满意，给评语“花，四季皆盛放。”学生想通评语，反复斟酌推敲，终于写下“当寒风送走了白雪，绿色便迎来了春天，这个伟大的与冬截然相反的季节，在万物生发的天地间，浓装淡抹绽放了。”这次没了评语，只有一个大红圈。可是，高考作文他的学生却从来没满分，老师批下来，“病句”，“不贴合实际”？就这样，爷爷只能在禁区外高二候着，手中的烂漫花朵，一进禁区迅速枯萎。

爷爷为此曾不止一次找过上级领导说：“硬性抹杀孩子的创新思想，我们搞教育的就是罪人啊！”领导也只会说：“我以前听过您的课，深知您的课是茶中君山，酒中茅台，这高三您如果不满竟可以换数学，毕竟，高三那两位教学老师快退休了，您以前给李上的那堂课至今我还历历在目，您还有什么事吗？没有的话我去给上级汇报工作去了。”就这样，爷爷如一个世外高人一般，在禁区外看着别人不能理解的君山、茅台。

爷爷是在学校里唯一被称为“先生”的人，可能就是“先生”这句尊称，补偿爷爷三十多年来湮灭的本该特别的历史。

粉笔生涯，讲台春秋，爷爷从教三十多年，荣誉证堆起来有半人高，铜制奖章有2斤重。但是相对应的，爷爷有几十本各方面的书籍，退休之前一小部分柴火来自用了N遍草稿纸，三十多年来攒下的新本子可以保守估计帮一人度过小学三学期。

我问过爷爷，既然他在那得不到认可何不另找别处，爷爷说：“一天为人师，终生为人师，这种感觉在一个没有真正当过老师的人身上是永远体会不出的。”
