I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800s, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumass last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. 翻过一道河梁，河谷的树丛里藏着一个个小水沼，岸边是大片大片的还未抽穗的小草，吃在口里略微甘甜的，每一个初春开始的季节，我们都会来这里寻找。上一年的水草，弯了腰，点在水上，水里的几条小鱼似乎拨动了几处水纹。打着草儿走在丛地里，里面虫儿各处的跳着，跑着。有时望一望更远处的风景，会想着这里到底藏了多少趣儿。 那里的夜很寂静，那里的夜鸣声儿婉转。那里的夜是捉摸不到的黑暗，那里的夜点着篝火谈天，那里星星挂满了天空，那里猎户星每一天都在向南边转着。夜晚的风里吹的轻快，树叶儿沙沙作响。站在这个夜里，看着星空下的话语，也许没有明天的太阳的，是今天安静的夜色。麦地一片一片的铺着，果树一排一排的立着。曾经在这片土地上翻找，曾经在这片水里游过，曾经爬上了高高的树看着，仿佛天地一直如此般，没有变过的，以后也不会改变。

我在瓜果田园里等待，跑在了每一处，细细劳作在耕地上，我从来没有想过要逃离的这片土地，我希望它永远这里的，记一个往日的田园。城市里的楼太高了，挡住了想要忘穿的视线。我只能低头徘徊在人潮人海中，像是一个流浪的人，该回到何处去寻找。我又给自己筑起了高高的墙，描绘了往昔的语言，仿佛在逃避的，又仿佛在寻找的过去难忘的自己。
