古时“拜年”一词原有的含义是为长者拜贺新年，包括向长者叩头施礼、祝贺新年如意、问候生活安好等内容。遇有同辈亲友，也要施礼道贺。

每年农历腊月的最后一天的晚上，农历年的最后一天，称之为“除夕”。它与春节(正月初一)首尾相连，是人们辞旧迎新的日子。由于农历大月有三十天、小月只有二十九天，所以除夕的日期也就有廿九、三十的不同了。但是这一天常常不论是二十九还是三十，习惯上都被称为“大年三十”。除夕晚上全家人团圆吃年夜饭(农历一年中最后一顿饭)，年夜饭以后有发压岁钱和熬年夜(守岁)的习俗，表示从农历本年的最后一天守到下一年的第一天。

在老厦门人眼里，腊月二十四送神祭拜完后，大家就得为过年忙活了。厦门人过年就是图个热闹、喜庆，什么东西都希望能沾点喜气，这个时候，除了要大扫除以外就是要添补一些年货，忙的不亦乐乎。

而到了除夕之夜，到处灯火辉煌。家家户户除了贴春联外，房门两侧还要搁置两株圈贴红纸的连根甘蔗，叫门蔗，方言蔗与佳近音，寓意进入佳境。此外，厅堂中案桌摆有隔年饭、长年菜、发糕，并插上用红、黄两纸扎的“春枝”，寓意饭菜长年丰足，吉祥发财。

除夕夜，家家户户都有围炉吃年夜饭的习惯，也是厦门人最重视的。家长和子女围炉吃年夜饭，以示来年全家团团圆圆。在除夕的年夜饭里，有几样食物是绝对不能少的。比如菠菜，不可以切根，有头有尾，每人都得吃一根，意寓“平安”。还有血蚶，闽南话说“蚶壳钱大赚钱”，将吃剩的蚶壳洗净，洒在桌子底下或床下，直到初五才收拾。

吃完年夜饭后全家都要在围炉旁，叫做围炉守岁。最好通宵达旦守着，据说这是为父母添寿。并且长辈要给小孩子分压岁钱。

正月初一，人们都得早早起床，清早要先吃碗面线，表示新的一年健康长寿。大家换上新装到亲戚家拜年。路上遇到朋友，都要彼此恭贺新年。

到了最后的元宵节，这天人们都会吃汤圆，闹花灯、舞狮等活动。

“爆竹声中一岁除，春风送满入屠苏”春节终于来了，压岁钱，年糕，庙会……这些让我们喜爱的习俗也开始了。可让我最喜欢的是……

春节里，我们更少不了要放鞭炮来活跃一下春节时欢欢喜喜的气氛了。放鞭炮在民间还有一个传说：相传在远古的时侯，有一只叫“年”的怪兽，每到春节的时候就出来吓唬人，于是人们就想了个办法，用竹筒点燃扔向它，竹筒爆炸后发出很大的声响，吓走了年兽，放鞭炮的习俗就这样流传下来了。

汉族的春节习俗:一般以吃年糕、饺子、糍粑、汤圆、荷包蛋、大肉丸、全鱼、美酒、福橘、苹果、花生、瓜子、糖果、香茗及肴馔为主;并伴有掸扬尘、洗被褥、备年货、贴春联、贴年画、贴剪纸、贴福字、点蜡烛、点旺火、放鞭炮、守岁、给压岁钱、拜年、走亲戚、上祖坟、逛花市、闹社火等众多活动，极尽天伦之乐。如年夜饭，尤为讲究：

一是全家务必聚齐，因故未回者必须留一座位和一套餐具，体现团圆之意;

二是饭食丰盛，重视“口彩”，把年糕叫“步步高”、饺子叫“万万顺”，酒水叫“长流水”，鸡蛋叫“大元宝”，鱼叫“年年有余”;这条鱼准看不准吃，名为“看余”，必须留待初一食用.北方无鱼的地区，多是刻条木头鱼替代;

三是座次有序，多为祖辈居上。孙辈居中，父辈居下，不分男女老幼，都要饮酒。吃饭时关门闭户，热闹尽兴而止。

家家户户开始大量置办年货，大人们还要买过冬的衣服呢。还要在过年的那天之前进行大扫除。到了真正过年的那天，大家都开始挂灯笼、贴春联，春联是为我们迎接新的一年，而灯笼是让我们这年过得红红火火。不仅如此，还要在窗户上贴福，而且要倒着贴，意味着福倒了，福到了。春节吃饭前要先放鞭炮是为了迎接新年的到来，吃饭时，小孩的嘴可甜了，他们走过去跟爸爸妈妈说新年快乐，就能得到红包。吃完饭后，外面开始热闹起来，一条条长龙接二连三地从巷子里跑出来，彩色的龙头欢劲地扭着，在大马路上显得格外引人入胜，路旁的烟花给舞龙的人们打气，他们舞的更欢了。

每当到了除夕夜晚的十二点真是极为热闹，一大筒烟花排山倒海得飞起向天空在天空中炸成了一朵花，一大群烟花飞快地冲向天空，炸开了一朵朵五颜六色的鲜花，七彩的烟花炫染了整片天空，显得格外美丽，一条长长的鞭炮在地上“啪啪啪”地响着，在过年时放鞭炮是为了赶走一只叫“年”的怪兽，喜欢在过年时去村里偷吃，但它怕鞭炮，所以家家在过年时放鞭炮。
