Unable to regain the respect of the emperor，in his sorrow Chu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Low river. Because of their admiration for Chu Yuan， the local people living adjacent to the Mi Lo River rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the waters to appease the river dragons.

Although they were unable to find Chu Yuan，their efforts are still commemorated today during the Dragon Boat Festival.

相传以前，有一头叫“年”的怪兽。每到除夕这天，村里的人们便逃往深山，以躲避“年”兽的伤害。

这年除夕，人们准备上山避难。这时，从村外来了一个乞讨老人。乡亲们谁都顾不上这位乞讨老人。只有一位老婆婆给了老人一些食物，并劝他快上山躲避“年”兽，老人笑道：“婆婆若让我借宿一夜，定把‘年’撵走。”半夜时分，“年”兽闯进村，发现老婆婆家门贴大红纸，屋内灯火通明，还传来了“噼里啪啦”的鞭炮声。“年”最怕红色、火光和鞭炮声，只能狼狈逃蹿。第二天，人们回来后，村里依然安然无恙。

这件事很快传开了，人们都知道了驱赶“年”的办法。

从此，每年除夕，家家户户贴红对联、燃放爆竹、守更待岁。这种风俗越传越广，最后成为了中国民间最隆重的传统节日——春节。

在绍兴，一跨入农历十二月，人们就忙着准备过年：裹粽、掸尘、杀鸡宰鹅、晒鱼干、酱猪肉，准备新年的衣裳，购买赠送亲友的礼品。

腊月二十三晚上，家家户户都要送灶神上天。送灶神之后，除夕之前，每户人家总要选择一个祝福的吉日，这是一年之中最为隆重的大祭典。绍兴人叫祝福菩萨，来答谢神明保佑和祈求来年幸福。人们都说，天上的菩萨，不进不洁之家。因此，祝福之前，必须把厅堂、祭桌、祭器等掸扫、洗刷得干干净净。

大年夜，首先要给祖宗分岁，就是祭祖。祭祖后，一家人就会聚在一起吃年夜饭，年夜饭所备饭菜是最为丰盛的一餐。年夜饭后，就是“辞岁”，小孩向长辈行礼，长辈将事先用红纸所包的钱币分发给晚辈，俗称“压岁钱”。在新年的钟声敲响的时候，有些人会燃放爆竹，俗称放关门炮仗。有些人则嬉戏娱乐，通宵不眠，直至天明，俗称守岁、坐长命夜，据说坐长生夜可以保佑长生不老。

过年的习俗，绍兴和外地大同小异。在新年旧岁交替的一个月里，人们就是这么忙碌着的。
