钟馗是民间比较流行的门神之一。传说唐明皇在夜里突发疾病，昏睡中梦见一个小鬼盗走了贵妃的香囊和自己的玉笛，并绕殿而跑。他正在气恼时，又见一个穿蓝袍戴着帽子的大鬼跑来，捉住小鬼挖出其双眼一口吞下。唐明皇问大鬼的来历，大鬼奏曰：“臣姓钟名馗，生前应武举未中，如今愿为明皇斩妖除魔。”明皇醒后，疾病痊愈，于是叫来当时最有名的画家吴道子，依照梦中所见画成钟馗捉鬼的画像：画上的钟馗着蓝衫短靴，长髯裸臂，相貌丑陋，但心灵纯正。明皇让人把钟馗的画像贴在门上，用来镇鬼。后来民间也纷纷效仿，在除夕夜把钟馗像贴在门上，用以镇鬼驱魔。

据史料记载，最初的门神是西汉时一位王爷让人绘制的一位叫成庆的勇士画像。而东汉时神话中两位受黄帝信任、对恶鬼毫不留情的两兄弟，哥哥神荼、弟弟郁垒也成为门神。

在中国古代神话中，相传有一个鬼界，那里有一棵枝繁叶茂的大桃树，树梢上有一只金鸡。每当清晨金鸡长鸣的时候，夜晚出去游荡的鬼魂必须赶回鬼界。鬼界门边站着两个神人，名叫神荼和郁垒。如果鬼魂在夜间干了伤天害理的坏事，神荼和郁垒就会立即发现并将它捉住，用芒苇做的绳子捆起来，送去喂虎。天下的鬼都畏惧神荼和郁垒。于是民间就用桃木刻成他们的模样，放在自家门口，以辟邪防害。

在秦始皇执政时，勇士荆轲冒死行刺秦王，虽然没能成功，但人们也把他看成了英雄，所以在秦之后唐之前，人们习惯在门上贴荆轲的画像。

唐朝以后，除了神荼、郁垒二将以外，人们又把秦叔宝和尉迟恭两位唐代武将当做门神。在我们都熟知的《西游记》中就有个故事与此事有关：泾河龙王为了和一个算卜先生打赌，结果少降了点儿雨，因此犯了天条，罪该问斩。玉帝命当时唐朝的贤臣魏征为监斩官。泾河龙王为求活命，向唐太宗求情，希望能躲过此劫。唐太宗答应了，到了斩龙王的那个时辰，便宣召魏征进朝与之对弈，以阻止魏征监斩。没想到魏征下着棋，不小心打了一个盹儿，魂灵就升天，将龙王给斩了。龙王责怪太宗言而无信，日夜在宫外呼号讨命。

门神太宗担惊受怕，彻夜不得安宁，就把此事告知群臣，希望大家能想出良策。

当时的大将秦叔宝(秦琼)说愿同尉迟敬德(尉迟恭)戎装立在门外守卫。太宗应允了，没想到那一夜果真安然无事。可是，太宗也不忍心让两位大将这样每夜守候。于是，就命巧手丹青，把两位大将的容貌画下来贴于门上。后来，这一习俗在民间广为流传。

民间还有贴关羽和张飞像当做门神的。

门神像左右门扇各一张，后代常把一对门神画成一文一武。门神分为三类：第一类是“大门门神”，大多贴在车门或大门上，高约四五尺，宽约二三尺;第二类是“街门门神”，多贴在小街门上，高约二尺，宽约一尺。这两种门神都是一个黑脸，一个白脸。白左黑右，白善易，黑狞恶，两个人都手执槊钺;第三类是“屋门门神”，比街门门神稍小一点儿，也是黑白二神，但有坐像的。屋门贴得最多的是“麒麟送子”像，两个傅粉涂脂梳太子冠的娃娃，各乘麒麟。这种门神最初是贴在新婚夫妇的屋门上，以取吉利。

随着门神的出现，贴春联的习俗也应运而生。春联也叫门对、春贴，是对联的一种。它的主要特点是对仗工整，简洁精巧，是我国古代文学的一种形式。贴春联的习俗大约开始于一千多年前的后蜀时期，它的原始形式就是人们所说的“桃符”。古人认为桃木可以驱鬼，是一种吉祥之物。最早民间是用桃木刻上神荼和郁垒的模样，放在自家门口，以辟邪防害。后来，为了方便，人们干脆在桃木板上刻上神荼和郁垒的名字，认为这样做同样可以镇邪去恶。这种桃木板后来就被叫做“桃符”。五代时，西蜀的宫廷里，有人在桃符上题写联语：“新年纳余庆，嘉节号长春”，这便是我国的第一副春联。到了宋代，人们开始在桃木板上写对联，这种方式既不失桃木镇邪的意义，又表达了美好的心愿，还能装饰门户。王安石的诗中就有“千门万户曈曈日，总把新桃换旧符”之句。宋代后期，桃符由桃木板改为纸张，叫“春贴纸”。人们在象征喜庆吉祥的红纸上写对联，新春之际贴在门窗两边，用以表达祈求来年福运的美好心愿。到了明代，“桃符”改称为“春联”。据说明太祖朱元璋就很重视春联，他曾下令过年时让各家各户都贴春联，并且一律在红纸上书写。

有一次他微服出巡，经过一户人家，见门上没有贴春联，心中不悦，便去询问。一问才知这一家是阉阉猪的，都不识字，还没有请人代写春联。于是，朱元璋就提笔一挥，特地为这家人写了“双手劈开生死路，一刀割断是非根”的春联。这副春联，联意贴切并且幽默风趣。

对联春联的种类比较多，依照使用场所不同，可分为门心、框对、横披、春条、斗方等。“门心”贴于门板上端中心部位;“框对”贴于左右两个门框上;“横披”贴于门楣的横木上;“春条”根据不同的内容，贴于相应的地方;“斗方”也叫“门叶”，为菱形，多贴在家具、影壁上。
