Christmas， annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ。 Most members of the Roman Catholic Church and followers of Protestantism celebrate Christmas on December 25， and many celebrate on the evening of December 24 as well。 Members of the Eastern Orthodox Church usually delay their most important seasonal ceremonies until January 6， when they celebrate Epiphany， a commemoration of the baptism of Jesus。 Epiphany also traditionally commemorates the arrival of the Three Wise Men of the East in Bethlehem （near Jerusalem， Israel）， where they adored the infant Jesus and presented him with gifts of gold， frankincense， and myrrh。 The official Christmas season， popularly known as either Christmastide or the Twelve Days of Christmas， extends from the anniversary of Christ’s birth on December 25 to the feast of Epiphany on January 6。  Christmas is based on the story of Jesus’ birth as described in the Gospel according to Matthew （see Matthew 1：18—2：12） and the Gospel according to Luke （see Luke 1：26—56）。 Roman Catholics first celebrated Christmas， then known as the Feast of the Nativity， as early as 336 ad。 The word Christmas entered the English language sometime around 1050 as the Old English phrase Christes maesse， meaning festival of Christ。 Scholars believe the frequently used shortened form of Christmas—Xmas—may have come into use in the 13th century。 The X stands for the Greek letter chi， an abbreviation of Khristos （Christ）， and also represents the cross on which Jesus was crucified。

My New Deskmate

My new deskmate is a boy of sixteen. His name is Zhang Gao. He is 1.8

meters tall. His strongly-built body and sun-tanned skin make him look like a

sportsman. He has two big dark eyes under a pair of thick eyebows. It seems that

they are always smiling at you. Compared with my yellow hair, his hair is black

and thick. He speaks a little bit fast but very clearly. However, he likes to

gesture from time to time while hes talking. He has a dream of becoming a famous

actor one day. I believe his dream will come true because of his handsome face

and well-developed figure.

我的新同桌是一个16岁的男孩。他叫张高，身高一米八。结实的身材、晒黑的皮肤使他看起来像运动员。他浓浓的眉毛下有一双又黑又大的眼睛，似乎总是在对人微笑。与我的黄头发相比，他有一头浓密的黑发。他的语速有点快，但相当清楚，只是他说话时爱打手势。他的理想是当一名演员，我想他英俊的长相和匀称的身材定会让他好梦成真。

This semester, my school launched a winter long-distance running activities. After the second class every morning after class, the students arranged the team on the playground by class. Although our school playground is not large, with the physical arrangement of the PE teachers, all of our classes are very well placed to start long-distance running at designated spots.

Although the weather is very cold and the wind is very strong, students in our class can actively participate in long-distance running activities and observe discipline. Every time I started to run, my classmates shrank and the wind blows on my face, all feeling tingling. Some of my classmates eyes were blown out by cold winds. However, students can insist on exercise, fear cold. In a matter of moments, the little cheeks of the classmates became bright red, like blossoming Lamei blooming in the winter; the white-hot heat exhaled by the classmates was like snowflakes floating on the playground. Watching students brisk pace, can not help but remind people of the Northern Song Dynasty poet Wang Plum "plum" in the verse: "The number of branches Mei Mei, Ling cold alone to open.
