这本书主要讲了，20年代末，六岁的小姑娘英子住在北京城南的一条小胡同里。经常痴立在胡同口寻找女儿的“疯”女人秀贞，是英子结交的第一个朋友。秀贞的女儿被扔到城墙底下，生死不明，英子对他十分同情。英子知道了自己的好朋友妞儿的身世很像小桂子后，又发现妞儿的脖子后面也有一块胎记，急忙带她去找秀贞。可没过多久，她们母女俩就被火车压死了。英子为此伤心了好一段时间。在英子家门前，有一片无人管理的荒地，她在那里又认识了一个为了供弟弟上学，而不得不去偷东西的年轻人。当时英子还不知道“偷”是什么意思，便答应了他不把这件事告诉任何人。不久，英子又在这里捡到了一尊小铜佛，被警察局暗探发现，糊里糊涂地带着警察把那个年轻人抓走了。

故事的主要内容：在一个万家灯火通明新年的夜里，天上下着鹅毛般的大雪，街上行人已经很少了，大家都围着火炉吃东西……。可卖火柴的小女孩还要光着脚，穿着单薄的衣服在寒冷的大街上卖她还没卖完的火柴，因为她不卖完就不准回家。这时她又冷又饿只好在一个墙角靠擦火柴取暖，看着别人家围着火炉热闹的样子，不由地想起自己的妈妈和老祖母。可是，在点燃火柴的那一刻，她想象自己坐在火炉旁、吃着香喷喷的烤鹅，最终她走向了没有饥饿和忧愁通往天国的小路，和奶奶一起在天国幸福快乐地生活着。她一生最幸福的时刻就是点燃火柴，幻想幸福的那一刻，可是只有那一刻是幸福的……

读到这里我的眼眶湿润了，多么可怜的一个小女孩啊，在万家团圆的新年之夜，而她却一个人光着脚流浪在街头卖火柴，如果她在我身边我定会把她带回家里给她吃的和穿的，让她不在在寒冷的街头挨饿受冻。今天我们生活在一个温暖的家庭里，吃着爸爸妈妈做得香喷喷的饭菜，穿着漂亮的新衣服，看着内容丰富多彩的电视节目，过着衣食无忧的生活，而我们这些快乐和幸福对她来说都是那么遥不可及，想想我们平时真不应该埋怨爸爸妈妈这样或那样啊！
