air pollution comes from factories, power stations and cars. chemicals in the smoke from power stations cause a lot of damage. they can travel hundreds of miles in the wind before falling to the ground in the rain. but this "chemical rain" gradually destroys trees in the forests and kills fish in the lakes. in germany, over 50% of the country’s trees had been damaged by the year 1986.

time and time again there are serious accidents that pollute the air. in 1986 there was a bad accident at a nuclear power station in russia. a cloud of radiation crossed the whole of europe. it is said that 125,000 people died in russia as a result of illnesses caused by this accident.

in 1984 there was a serious accident at a factory in india and a cloud of dangerous gas covered the town of bhopal. over 2,500 people were killed that night, and hundreds of thousands of people were injured. many of the injured lost their sight.

Reading makes people happy. Golgi once said, "reading a good book is talking to many noble people."

When I was young, I had very little knowledge of vocabulary. I often saw my mother reading a thick Olympic math book. A solution does not come out of the title mothers eyebrows knit into a question mark, when mom finally solved a problem, will beam with joy. I went around my father, I saw my father also was all eyes looking at a book in English, he watched and learned, not to say a few words in english.

I doubted, thinking: why the book can make them so fascinating? So I picked up a book and read it. But I knew very little words, and I told my mother to tell me stories before going to bed every night. "Good children bedtime ten minutes story", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Zheng Yuanjie fairy tales", "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "outlaws of the marsh"... "

Gradually, as I grew up, I began to read books myself. I know Cao Cao in the romance of the Three Kingdoms, and his every move reveals his cunning. Zhang Feis reckless, Liu Bei heavy friendship etc.. In the "Water Margin", I also know the outspoken Song Jiang and gallant heroes of Liangshan.

It is the three of us are walking together, there must be my teacher, is the good from it, the poor instead. "! More reading makes my eloquence and writing very good, writing composition is easy, and my writing level has improved a lot.

Reading makes me understand a lot of extra—curricular knowledge, understand the infinite fun of knowledge. Reading makes me happy. I love reading!

Our family enjoyed a wonderful New Years evening family dinner because it is seldom to get so many relatives to get together. My uncle, aunt and cousin,my best friend, came and had dinner with us.It took almost whole afternoon to prepare the dishes.Of course, that is a chance to show my mom and my aunts cooking skill. We also try to do something to help them, but, what we got was "going to play".It is happy for me to hear that rather than "go to do your homework".The evening dinner is so good, everyone enjoyed and aet overload to their stomach. So wonderful dinner,so wonderful new year.

Nowadays, more and more families choose to have the dinner on New Year’s Eve in restaurants.Though this choice doesn’t follow our tradition,I think it’s good and should be encouraged.

First,it’s obviously more convenient to do so.The process of preparing a home-made New Year’s Eve dinner is not only hard but also annoying.People have to buy food several days before the festival and spend a long time cooking all sorts of dishes. Now,just pick up the telephone and reserve a table.Everything will be well arranged by the restaurant.

Second,it still create a warm atmosphere by getting the family united, which is the true purpose of the dinner. In the restaurant, you celebrate the New Year and share your happiness with other families and usually can enjoy special performances or activities, organized by the owner of the restaurant.

To make a conclusion, having the dinner on New Year’s Eve outside shows a change in people’s thoughts on traditions and seems to be a wise, nice and exciting idea.

There is a trend that more and more families have their dinner on New Year’s Eve in the restaurant.Although it is more convenient,it doesn’t seem to be a pleasure thing for me.

Firstly, the restaurants are too crowded.Owing to this,we cannot talk freely. In addition, the sense of harmony cannot be felt by the family members.

Secondly,it may cost us a big sum of money which we can save by having the dinner in our own families. The whole family’s preparation for the dinner is also a process of enjoying according to my view.

In a word,it is not a good idea to have New Year’s Eve dinner in the restaurant.Home dinner makes a happy New Year.

My father, Winston Churchill, began his love affair with painting in his 40s, amid disastrous circumstances. As First Lord of the Admiralty in 1915, he was deeply involved in a campaign in the Dardanelles that could have shortened the course of a bloody world war. But when the mission failed, with great loss of life, Churchill paid the price, both publicly and privately. He was removed from the admiralty and effectively sidelined.

Overwhelmed by the catastrophe — “I thought he would die of grief,” said his wife, Clementine —he retired with his family to Hoe Farm, a country retreat in Surrey. There, as Churchill later recalled, “The muse of painting came to my rescue!”

Wandering in the garden one day, he chanced upon his sister-in-law sketching with watercolors. He watched her for a few minutes, then borrowed her brush and tried his hand. The muse had cast her spell!

Churchill soon decided to experiment with oils. Delighted with this distraction from his dark broodings, Clementine rushed off to buy whatever paints she could find.

For Churchill, however, the next step seemed difficult as he contemplated with unaccustomed nervousness the blameless whiteness of a new canvas. He started with the sky and later described how “very gingerly I mixed a little blue paint on the palette, and then with infinite precaution made a mark about as big as a bean upon the affronted snow-white shield. At that moment the sound of a motor car was heard in the drive. From this chariot stepped the gifted wife of Sir John Lavery .”

“ ‘Painting!’ she declared. ‘But what are you hesitating about? Let me have the brush — the big one.’ Splash into the turpentine, wallop into the blue and the white, frantic flourish on the palette, and then several fierce strokes and slashes of blue on the absolutely cowering canvas.”

At that time, John Lavery— a Churchill neighbor and celebrated painter— was tutoring Churchill in his art. Later, Lavery said of his unusual pupil: “Had he chosen painting instead of statesmanship, I believe he would have been a great master with the brush.”

In painting, Churchill had discovered a companion with whom he was to walk for the greater part of the years that remained to him. After the war, painting would offer deep solace when, in 1921, the death of the mother was followed two months later by the loss of his and Clementine’s beloved three-year-old daughter, Marigold. Battered by grief, Winston took refuge at the home of friends in Scotland, finding comfort in his painting. He wrote to Clementine: “I went out and painted a beautiful river in the afternoon light with crimson and golden hills in the background. Alas I keep feeling the hurt of the Duckadilly (Marigold’s pet name).”

Historians have called the decade after 1929, when the Conservative government fell and Winston was out of office, his wilderness years. Politically he may have been wandering in barren places, a lonely fighter trying to awaken Britain to the menace of Hitler, but artistically that wilderness bore abundant fruit. During these years he often painted in the South of France. Of the 500-odd canvases extant, roughly 250 date from 1930 to 1939.

Painting remained a joy to Churchill to the end of his life. “Happy are the painters,” he had written in his book Painting as a Pastime, “ for they shall not be lonely. Light and color, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end of the day.” And so it was for my father.

A review of the Pursuit of Happiness

“The Pursuit of Happyness” was released on the 15th of December 2006. It is a dramatic story based on a biography of Chris Gardner’s nearly one-year struggle with homelessness. Directed by Gabrielle Muccino, the film stars Will Smith as Chris Gardner, and co-stars Jaden Smith playing Chris’ son, Christopher Jr. For Will Smith’s performance in the film, he was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor. The ‘different’ spelling of the title, ‘Happyness’ is seen by Chris Gardner on the building outside the play centre is son attends, which Chris reminds the owners of the building multiple times that it is spelt with an ‘I’.

The film shows us the struggles Chris Gardner has with homelessness. He is bankrupt because he invested his life savings in portable bone-density scanners, which he thought hospitals would be interested in buying, but in the end hardly any doctors wanted one, as they considered it an ‘expensive luxury’. During the struggles, his wife Linda leaves to go to New York and Chris and his son are left in San Francisco with no income and living in a motel. Chris sees interest in become a stockbroker, but to become one he has to go through an internship. Meanwhile, Chris and his son are evicted because they can’t pay rent, and they are forced to go to a homeless shelter, and even one night had to sleep in the bathroom of the underground rail system. During his internship, he never once mentions his financial struggles and at one point he is asked to give one of his bosses 5 dollars for a cab, a sum that he can’t afford. After an intense six months, Chris is taken into the bosses’ office, and is offered a job as a stockbroker, the final scene shows him being in unbelief of the position he was offered and showing his happiness and gratefulness for the opportunity, Chris realises that his financial struggles are over as he now has a job with a regular income.

Christ was unfortunate, for he got a wife who was not understandable at all (though she has her own difficulties) and was in bad luck with his business. But he was very fortunate also, for he got a son who was very thoughtful and, I think, tough life experiences always make a great person. It is said that this movie is inspired by a true story, and I want to say, this movie does inspire me a lot. What impressed me most are: Christ’s wife left him because of life pressure; Christ’s love to his son and Christ’s strong belief towards life. Through these, I know that it is not easy to be a good husband and a good Papa, since in reality, only love cannot only make everything. And I also learn that one has to strongly believe in himself, no matter how difficult the situation is, but of course, hard-working is indispensable.
