When a person decides to own a dog, he should be prepared to care for it properly. For a dog to stay healthy it must be correctly fed and adequately groomed, and its medical needs must be met. Others, such as the beagle and the cocker spaniel, are playful family pets, even though they were bred for hunting. Still others, such as the collie and the Welsh corgi, can herd farm or range animals. Each of the dogs just mentioned is a purebred. A mongrel dog, however--one with many breeds in its background--can just as easily fit into family life.

They have delivered messages, herded sheep and cattle, and even rescued persons trapped in the snow. Dogs have served as a source of food, too. In the past dogs have even been worshiped as gods. Recently, they have been used in drug research, medical experimentation, and space science. Dogs are trained as guard dogs in peacetime by the United States Army and other military services. Because of their keen sense of smell, dogs are used by police at times to track down escaped prisoners. Law enforcement agencies also rely on the dogs acute sense of smell to uncover illegal drugs. 1、森林采伐。大熊猫栖息地每年的采伐面积达到至少1万公顷。其栖息地每年以大约2.5 平方千米的速度在消失(Kleiman et al，1991年)。近30多年来，陕、甘、川三省大熊猫分布区内人口倍增，已达43万余人，大型森工企业自1950~1985年共达27个(不含县属伐木场)，采伐的森林核实面积为42万多公顷，年均伐木面积为2万多公顷，致使栖息地由70年代初的31,450平方千米，经过15年后，已锐减至13,921.52平方千米，减少面积达17528.48平方千米，占原栖息地的56%，并造成6个伐区内熊猫消失，10个伐区内仅残存极少数熊猫，种群数量急剧下降;

2、捕捉过多。如在解放前汶川县草坡，英、美等西方国家，在那时收购、捕捉活体达20多只(猎杀者在外)，致使那里的大熊猫种群，迄今已逾50余年，数量仍然很少，且尚未恢复。又如宝兴县从1963年迄今，仅在一个县内，捕捉的大熊猫就达113只以上。从50年代中期开始，从野外捕捉的熊猫已超过240只到国内外展出，其中又集中在宝兴110余只，平武60余只，致使这两个县种群结构被破坏，数量大幅度下降。根据大熊猫生命表分析，它们一个世代约需12年，种群增长很慢，如果大量捕捉，即使在保护得好的情况下，也需要几十年才能恢复;

3、近些年来，盗猎、走私大熊猫皮张标本尚时有发生;

4、大熊猫种群分布在25个以上岛状隔离的生境中。这些隔离的生境区大小为205平方千米(30~2384km范围)，其中大多数(67%)的面积少于350km2。这种种群的孤立和分割则是长期威胁其种群的重要因素，小群体的近交衰退现象将降低繁殖力、幼体成活率以及对疾病的抵抗能力。最终"岛状"成员将消失。据潘文石等对秦岭熊猫种群的遗传分析，那里有200余只大熊猫，可构成一个约90只的繁殖群体，其世代杂合率递减率为0.54%，经过12代后即140年后，每个成员都将有1/8的基因相同，相当于表(堂)兄妹的亲缘关系;

5、由于人类活动范围扩大，大熊猫被迫退缩于山顶，竹种十分单纯，一遇竹子开花，将无回旋余地，仅1975年岷山地区箭竹开花，死亡达138只以上;80年代邛崃山冷箭竹大面积开花，灾后发现大熊猫尸体108具，抢救无效死亡33只，共计141只;

在世界自然基金会成立43周年之际公布的这份《大熊猫野外生存报告》旨在向世人介绍大熊猫的生存状况，报告指出，我国“国宝”大熊猫的野外生存目前仍然面临着威胁，而这种威胁主要来自人类贪婪的开发——“林的锐减和栖息地的破坏化”。在大熊猫生存数量最多的四川省，其栖息地面积在1974年到1987年之间就减少了一半，1999年在四川省青川县的试点调查发现，这个大熊猫栖息地面积自1987年以来减少了30%。

作为WWF中国大熊猫保护项目的前任负责人和报告的作者之一，北京大学的吕植博士认为：“栖息地的破坏化对于大熊猫的生存构成了极大的威胁，因为其食物完全来自高山地区的不同种类的竹子，它们必须能够迁涉以适应竹子开花死亡的生存周期。”当然，大熊猫栖息地破坏化最主要的是人为因素造成的，道路的建设、居住点的扩大等造成了其种群之间的交流受阻，小块、分裂的大熊猫种群将面临近亲交配的危险，这就是导致它们对疾病抵抗能力的降低、对环境变化适应力的减弱和繁殖率的降低等。
