When I was a freshman in college I watched the film Gua Sha Treatment for the first time, now I am a junior student and I come back to review the movie from a multicultural aspect, I have many different feelings after watching the film again.

At the beginning of the film, XuDatong is given an award and later he delivers a speech. What makes me impressed most is in his speech he says “one day I will become one of you, a truly successful American, today this award proved that America is a true land of opportunity and I am the living proof of that.” At that moment Xu thinks he has realized his American Dream totally with his lovingly wife and adorable son. However, I think it is ironical that to make a speech like that and I assume it is made on purpose to hind a clue for the story’s development. How many non-American people have such a beautiful American dream? One of my classmate studies in American now and before he went aboard he told me his American dream is he can stand at the top of the New York. To be honest, I also dream that one day I can get the Green Card living there happily and successfully maybe working at the Wall Street. When Xu gets the award he thinks he entirely melted in the melting pot neglecting the multicultural obstruct, later the plot goes against the way he thinks. And later Quinlan asked Xu ‘why you be the scapegoat of your father?’ Xu answers ‘because he is Chinese.’ Then maybe Xu knows that there is always a wide gap between Chinese and American cultures.

The second scene is Xu hit his son Denis because Denis hit the son of xu’s boss, at the middle of the film xu tells his boss that he hit his own son is only to show his respect to his boss John Quinlan, that time Quinlan feels puzzled “what a Chinese logic”， yes, American can never understand such a logic full of Chinese characteristic, because they respect everyone including the children, they won’t beat a child to please the boss, and there is no such a conception of degree between employee and employer, they feel everyone is equal, which is quite different from china.

Connected to the second scene, the third difference I want to analyze is the care for the children. In America, people pay more attention to the right of children which can be seen from the law—leaving children alone at home is illegal, while in China it is so common that almost everyone may experience such loneliness. And Children Welfare Agency does work in America which shows the importance Americans attach to children’s right. What’s more, I remember a line ‘No one won the case, especially the child.’ In my opinion, it also manifests the universal concern from the American public to the children.

The fourth aspect is following the procedure, in the film, more than there times, the people focus on the rule, the law, the procedure. At the Christmas Eve Xu wants to return back to his home pretending as a Santa Claus, what a pity, the security recognizes him and persuades ‘you are always a good tenement, never causes troubles for me.’ And another scene is at the end of the film , the judge says ‘I have to follow the procedure.’ However, in China people always have to ask for a favor to do something, and later you have to pay back the favor ，for myself, I prefer the American style, strict to the procedure.

The fifth and the last point is the humors, Quinlan says ‘you can’t fall, your health security is the company paid.’ ‘Datong, welcome home, maybe next time, you can come from the front door.’ ‘dady, why you come from the window’ ‘ because we don’t have a chimney.’ I really adore this distinguished American humor, especially in dangerous situations, which is quite rare in China.

That’s my whole reaction to Gua Sha Treatment.

Little Women

Before I read this book, I had watched a cartoon movie made by Japan. So I have a strong interest on it.

It all begins in the dead of winter; The Christmas Season. The coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. While her husband is off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy.

On Christmas Eve, Marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls father. The all gather together around the fire to read the letter. Afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. Marmee kisses them and they are off to bed.

Jo is longing to become a writer. So, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. As morning comes she is the last one awake. The table is set, and food prepared for their Christmas feast.

As dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out Jos play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. As they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window.

The 2 oldest girls: Jo and Meg, get ready to attend the Christmas Ball. While Jo is curling Megs hair, there is a strange smell to the air. Amy screams, Megs hair is being singed. They continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves.

One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. One question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by Alcott. If they arent, what are Alcotts views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story?

It is interesting to examine the last half of Chapter 20, "Confidential." Jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with Marmee of the situation between Meg and Mr. Brooke. The possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. Jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. Jo cannot understand why Meg would want to stop behaving "like a sensible creature" (p.202)， and refers to love as "such nonsense."

我最近读了《鲁滨逊漂流记》的书。我一下就被书中的主人公鲁滨逊，在一个人迹罕见的孤岛上，为了生存而顽强的和命运抗争的故事深深地吸引了。

鲁滨逊是一位英国人，从小就酷爱航海，希望走遍天涯海角。可是，在他的一次航海中，遭遇大风暴，打翻了船，同船的其他人，都殉难海中，只活了鲁滨逊自己，他被海浪推到一个孤岛上，为了生存，赤手空拳地开始了他与天斗、与地斗、与野兽斗的旷日持久的生活。

他乘坐的船也被海浪推到这里，他登上破船寻找到一只猎枪和弹药，一些工具、食物、种子和一只狗以及两只猫。

他选择面向大海的僻静处搭建了帐篷，用一年多的时间围起一个木围栏，用圈养动物的方法储备食物，以备饥荒。用了四年多的时间，繁育小麦。可想而知，他的劳动要付出前所未有的努力，过程是极其艰苦的。直到二十八年后才遇救返回大陆。

看过鲁滨逊的故事，不得不承认，任性、娇气、依赖性强而动手能力差是我的也是大多数青少年的缺点。所以，要培养扭转逆境和在艰苦环境中求生存的能力，我从现在开始，应该反思自己，锻炼自己了。

Thoughts given by Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son

Written in the first chapter of the book Pride and Prejudice is an extraordinary sentence of which even a person who has had only a brief look upon the book will not fail to receive a deep impression-It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. In terms of Sherlock Holmes, we’d better alter the sentence into “It is a fact universally accepted by readers throughout the world that an excellent book in possession of our famous detective Sherlock Holmes is undoubtedly a masterpiece of all times.” Perhaps this is one of the most obvious explanations for the unrivaled popularity of “Holmes series” in the field of detective stories. Overwhelmed by the recommendations provided by my friends, I decided to take a look on this Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son originally published by Oxford University Press.

As a whole, this book is about a case concerning the Duke’s missing son. Arthur, the Duke’s son, was found out in a certain morning to have disappeared, accompanied with which was also the disappearance of the German teacher. The school master Dr. Huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time Sherlock Holmes for help. Realizing how tough and important the case is, Holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed Dr. Huxtable back to Mackleton by train. Having formed a rough idea about the wholle matter, Holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival, during the process of which he discovered the body of the German teacher Heidegger. Finally, primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective, he managed to unravel the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the Duke.

Having once started reading this fiction, I was completely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book. As the saying goes, “Well begun, half done”. At the beginning of the story, just like many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client. However, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client’s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it. As is known to all, vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure’s characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic and attractive. Therefore, trying to present a “real world” to his readership, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the original “Holmes series”, has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of Dr. Watson, a character not so specialized in discovering the truth hidden behind the enigmatic happenings as Holmes but so loyal to Sherlock Homes as a friend that he always accompanies Holmes wherever he goes. In this way, he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book, Apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reasonable, is certainly an outstanding one. After all, except the author himself, who knows that the Duke’s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the Duke’s bastard? In addition, who knows that the Duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before Holmes solves this complicated problem? Yet, surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well. While enjoying this wonderful story, I could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author’s gorgeous writing skill. Closing my eyes, I can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film. Not until then did I understand why the Japanese cartoon film Detective Conan used this “Conan” as the name of its hero.

As far as I am concerned, nothing is more admirable and surprising in the hero Sherlock Homes than his profound knowledge which has certainly assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. Take the bicycle tyres for instance, Holmes actually is capable of recognizing 42 different varieties of bicycle tyres. What’s more, according to his other stories, Holmes has studied different kinds of newspapers, cigarettes, people’s footprints and other special things as well. Therefore, he seems to have the mastery of anything relevant to the cases he deals with. Except for his illimitable knowledge, Holmes also specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the fact leading him to a GREat discovery or even the truth itself. From his speaking “Every mystery has an answer”, we can readily shape the impression of a man with great intelligence and inflexible will. In this case, after getting rid of unrelated facts, Sherlock Homes eventually grasped the clue and discovered the amazing fact.

I am convinced that few books are as good as this one. To be honest, I hadn’t maintained that this book would appeal me before I read it. However, I was absorbed in the book from the first chapter to the last one. Why this book has appealed to me that much? I asked myself. This book is not my type of reading for only romantic books could draw my attention successfully. Then I came into a conclusion that it is the friendship and familyship fascinated me.

To the world you are one person, but to the person who loves you, you are the world. Amir was Hassan’s world. Amir’s name had been the first word Hassan spoke. Hassan threatened brutal Assef for the sake of Amir. Hassan never failed to run the kite to please Amir. Hassan sacrificed himself for Amir’s house. These are more than a friend would do. Only those who loves you so much could challenge himself to do what Hassan did to Amir.To Hassan, Amir was not only a mere friend but a brother. He loved Amir more than anything else. Even after Amir betrayed him, he still told his son proudly“Agan Amir is my best friend”.Maybe for Hassan “for you, a thousand times over” has another meaning, which is not just kite running for Amir but he will do anything for Amir.

If Hassan could be described as an angel, then Amir was just a person. I did hate Amir for he watched Hassan be raped and did nothing, for he made Hassan leave his born-place, for he aimed Hassan with fruit(even though he actually tried to make himself get punished). Amir didn’t deserve what Hassan did to him. I thought his meanness caused Hassan’s tragedy. But after I finished the book, I realized it is not Hassan’s tragedy, it is Amir’s. For what he had done to Hassan, he had led a live with regret and suffered endless sleepless nights. His going back to Afghanistan is not only a journey physically but a journey to atonement. Hassan’s son, his nephew saved, Amir’s sin was finally washed. Like the life of circle, Amir ran kite for his miserable nephew.As Hassan did to him, he said “for you , a thousand times over” to Sohrab.Though the book doesn’t give us an accurate ending whether Sohrab came into life again. I am sure love can cure everything. Only when Sohrab lives a happy life as Hassan hoped can Amir’s sin washed up.

The friendship between Hassan and Amir moved me. I believe All the people who read it is going to be touched just as I am. This book does make me think the good and the bad ,what’s wrong and what’s right, the cruelty of war . Few books can exert an influence on people nowadays, this book sure does.

On Sister Carrie Carrie was such an ordinary rural girl at the beginning of the story. Sitting on the seat of a bus she couldn’t help feeling exciting at the sight of the metropolis’ spectacle. She was impressed deeply by large crowd on the avenue the spacious square or tall buildings. Far more different from other heroines Carrie was not a plain pure angel like Snow-white nor was she brave enough to be a heroine of revolutionist or even a reformer nor was she so clever as to be a successful career woman who start from scratch.

What attracted her most after her entering this huge metropolis was the incredible fineries fashion shoes smart handbags displaying in the shop windows the jewellerys shining brightly behind the glass. She dreamed that one day she could wear all of these jogging gracefully into the most luxurious hotel with focused sights of admiration. And this was not merely a dream. Because she had large eyes which can earn others’ sympathy even love. She had wonderful figure which can win others’ hearts. However anything she got anywhere she reached had not come from her ambition.

Things happened and then she accepted. That’s what she had just done ? just to accept willingly from the bottom of her heart. She was not at all an evil woman who would give anything for the fortune or fame. However she would give uo something for a better life when her instinct defeated her intellect.

That was Carrie a girl had her own desire a human being just like many others in the realistic world.There’s one sentence written in chapter VIII:” When this jangle of free-will instinct shall have been adjusted when perfect understanding has given the former the power to replace the latter entirely man will no longer vary.” However how many people can go that further.

我们回去后，我把那些蔬菜用水洗干净，星期五也跟我一起洗好了，我先用个盆子装起蔬菜，然后把盐找来，但是没有油，没有油的话，炒出来的菜是黄色的一点也不好吃，我只好把前些天我们吃的羊肉上切下羊脂炸出油来炒菜，我又切了一些羊肉想准备待会儿用来一起炒。准备好后我找了个跟盘子大小差不多的容器来，想等下拿来装。

我把刚才切的羊肉放在锅里炒起来（刚才的油在锅里），炒好了后我又把菜放下去,我让星期五在灶下放柴炒菜，他放好后，看我用那把木铲翻来翻去不知道我在干嘛，又看见锅里是刚才的蔬菜，于是他很着急一样对我说：“戴雅，蔬，蔬……菜。”然后又指着他说：“星期五。”又做个手势，我不知道他要说什么，但我知道他很急，他把锅里的菜，拿过我手上的铲子铲出来放在那个容器里。放好后他好像很放心了一样，我刚才一直想阻止他，但我阻止不了，他向我拼命摆手好像让我不要炒菜，这时我明白了，原来他已经我要他放火毁了我们好不容易摘来的菜。这时我想笑但来不及，因为火已经很旺了，我真不明白他以前吃人肉时不是也都是用火来烤的吗，怎么我在做菜他还以为我要怎么，难道他以前我采来菜是想……晒。我又恍然大悟，难怪我们回来时他总是看着那些树，原来在奇怪我为什么不像晒葡萄一样晒着那些蔬菜。

我把菜放回到了锅里去，继续让他放火，我指了指那些刚才炒过了的羊肉，然后看菜已经煮差不多了，就把羊肉一起放在锅里，再放盐。虽然我知道星期五不喜欢吃有盐的食物，也不习惯吃，因为在他们的野人部落里他根本不知道那很小一粒粒白色晶体的盐是什么东西，但我想他吃过有盐的蔬菜之后一定会喜欢上吃有盐的食物，因为人体很需要含碘的盐，不可能不吃，也不可以吃多。

虽然我做不了其它很重要的事和力所不能及的事，但菜我还是会做的，不久我就做了一盘香喷喷的菜出来了。星期五想用手去抓点菜吃，但我有前不久我自己做的筷子，筷子我做了两双，因为鲁滨逊有时会用筷子，但他一般不会用，因为他是外国人也没见过像我这样的中国人用的筷子，我给了他一双，想给他夹来吃，但他不会用，我只能用另一双筷子给他示范，果然他很快就会了。

他用那双筷子夹了一条白菜丝放进嘴里，果然他很喜欢吃，他又吃了一块肉，我想他想表示好吃吧，但他只是用拳头做好像是加油的样子，我不懂他要说什么，只知道他喜欢上了有盐的食物，他很高兴地吃着那些菜。然后他好像想起什么，“戴雅，主……人。”他指了指外面说，我猜他说的“主人”就是说鲁滨逊吧，我想他应该告诉了星期五叫他“主人”了，还算是个有良心忠诚的奴仆。我想告诉他待会儿鲁滨逊才会回来，但我不知如何表达，因为对于一个野人来说，他就像是一只动物一样了，不过他明白事情会很快，只不过我教他是有一定的困难，现在我只能教他说一些物品的名称。

比如，我把筷子拿在的手里对他说：“筷子。”他也跟我读了几次，接着我又像个老师一样跟他温习，我把一罐淡水拿过来，指着，星期五很快就明白了，说：“水。”尽管有些不清楚，但还是说得我是白，我又拿了几颗葡萄干放在他面前，“葡萄……”，我知道他看到葡萄干很像是葡萄，我就摇头说：“不是。”他明白我摇头说的是“不是”，然后他又明白了说：“不是。葡萄……干。”，我点点头说：“是。”他又明白了我点头就是说“是”，然后他就说：“是。”说完就像个孩子一样很高兴，就像我弟弟一样，学会了一样东西，即使很小的事也很开心，我也很乐意教他说话，但我只是教他说物品，有些事还是鲁滨逊教他说的，除此之外我只是像教那些三岁小孩刚学说话时说的“一二三四”。

但有些很简明的我有时都要教半天像能表达得让他是白，就好比，我想教星期五说“我”，我指着自己说：“我”，再接着指他说：“你。”但他不知道我说的意思就用手指指着他说：“星期五。”然后指我说：“戴雅。”他这样一弄得我也不知怎么表示，我只这么说：“我，是戴雅，你，是星期五。”这时他才明白了才说：“我是星期五，你，是戴雅。”

有时候他把我为难得真想不教他，但只能忍住性子，后来我又给我自己做了一套衣服，本来我还想再给星期五做套，但我现在我还没太多的材料可以做成他的衣服，而且没出针线，另外我还想办法做了两双鞋子……

Everybody has read a famous masterpiece - "treasure island", Treasure Island English reading. The book revolves around an adventure story, in which a young man was born in a poor home to make a living in a hotel. The boy is the hero of the book, Jim. Hawkins. He stumbled upon a map of a desert island where old pirates hid gold and silver. So, he and other friends to discuss, with a group of seaman embarked on a trip to find. But soon, they were a group of seaman mutiny, the two sides keen on the battlefield, they launched a thrilling fight with the enemy. Finally, because all the efforts of the crew, charged to victory, Jim soon, they carried the wealth jubilantly with the home.

Although I did not go there in person adventure, but in my mind, always emerge a picture, Jim his honest face always appeared in his side, he is so noble, kind, brave, he is always able to subdue the pirates, victory, he is so brave! Although the novel is genuine, his work embodies a sharp confrontation between good and evil. I think the story warns us not to do anything selfish, because it is the wrong way in your life, and Jim is a kind of spiritual wealth represented by justice.

It is the story of the American writer, educator Helen. Keller a rough. A blind man made such a great achievement is so amazing! If Helen succumbed to the fate, then she will be a parasitic poor and ignorant person. Helens life is extraordinary, she gave people a great encouragement, so that those idling people very regret. Remember Helen once proposed that such a question: "if your eyes will be blind tomorrow, do you want to see what today?" I don’t remember the exact year I first read The Little Prince . Though the golden snake in the book plays a cameo role , I never forget the scene that he flashed kissed gently on the little prince’s ankle. It made me be afraid to reread this book.

Later, I listened a Michael Wong’s song named Fairy-tale Story, the prince in his song is different from the prince in The Little Prince, the prince in the song is the same as Andersen’s tales’ princes, they all have happy endings.

However, I think The Little Prince is a sad story. There is a saying: There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand peoples eyes. Now, let me talk about my reading feeling. This simple story flies over every corner of the world: a pilot (the narrator) who had an accident with his plane and crashed in the Desert of Sahara then he met the little prince from the planet B-612, and the narrator listened little prince’s travel experience of seven planets. On the seven planets, he met a variety of persons. They are the king, the conceited man, the businessman, the tippler, the lamplighter, the geographer and so on.

The Little Prince is a story belongs to adults who have childlike innocence.because children don’t understand the little prince’s deep sadness.This is not so much a fairy tale, as it is a tragedy. This story tells the grow-ups’ world is full of empty，lost and loneliness with kids’ perspective. Among the story, the alcoholic is impressive. He was surrounded by a pile of beer bottles when the little prince saw him, and prince asked him why he is drinking, but he answered he want to forget his shame of drinking. This short planet visit plunged little prince into deep puzzled. He think the grow-ups are certainly very, very odd. In kids eyes, beautiful things must look with heart. But the adults pay more attention on things’ appearance that is just a shell and they don’t believe the eyes are blind and the heart is true.

Through this story, it also made me understand what’s the love---loves more mineral, more dense, more bitter and more weighty than the earths profoundest matter.

When I first read The Little Prince, I can’t understand the mean of love and never to think why should the little prince leave alone since he love his rose so deeply. For years, I reread the story and think about it. The simple true was first love. The little prince didn’t know how to love and It was difficult to make him understand the rose’s heart, so it may lead to misunderstanding and hurts from time to time. He leaved his planet because he can not accept the rose and himself.

This is why the little prince don’t know he have to leave : at that time, he had no idea he was in it. The little prince don’t understand the meaning of tame until he met the fox later. Then he produced the endless yearning for the roses and realized his responsibility.

"Do you want to be domesticated?" For me, this is a profound question. In the book, the little prince met a fox and invited the fox to play with him, but he was refused. The fox told him that he was not tamed. “what does that mean--tame?” little prince asked. The fox answered:” it means to establish ties: to me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. 孙悟空的特点是本事大，一路降妖全靠他，他很忠诚，又嫉恶如仇。但是他性子气，不服管教，经常闯祸，比如推倒人参果树，所以师傅给了戴了个紧箍咒。

猪八戒是个懒虫，又贪吃又贪睡，一遇到困难就想散伙，回高老庄娶媳妇。但猪八戒在取经的路上也少不了，唐僧和孙悟空闹矛盾，总是他把猴哥请回来。

沙和尚好像没什么本领，一路上就看他挑个担子，打仗时也只能打几个小妖。但沙和尚做事最认真，如果没有他，有谁能安全地把担子挑到西天呢?

正因为有了唐僧的坚定意志，孙悟空的本领高强，猪八戒的八面玲珑，沙和尚的认真负责，师徒们共同努力，才终于取得了真经。

读了这本书，我还明白了一个道理。每个人都有优点和缺点，我们大家共同去做一件事，只要能把大家的优点发挥出来，把缺点控制住，就能集大家的力量，把事情做好。
