Christmas， annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ。 Most members of the Roman Catholic Church and followers of Protestantism celebrate Christmas on December 25， and many celebrate on the evening of December 24 as well。 Members of the Eastern Orthodox Church usually delay their most important seasonal ceremonies until January 6， when they celebrate Epiphany， a commemoration of the baptism of Jesus。 Epiphany also traditionally commemorates the arrival of the Three Wise Men of the East in Bethlehem （near Jerusalem， Israel）， where they adored the infant Jesus and presented him with gifts of gold， frankincense， and myrrh。 The official Christmas season， popularly known as either Christmastide or the Twelve Days of Christmas， extends from the anniversary of Christ’s birth on December 25 to the feast of Epiphany on January 6。  Christmas is based on the story of Jesus’ birth as described in the Gospel according to Matthew （see Matthew 1：18—2：12） and the Gospel according to Luke （see Luke 1：26—56）。 Roman Catholics first celebrated Christmas， then known as the Feast of the Nativity， as early as 336 ad。 The word Christmas entered the English language sometime around 1050 as the Old English phrase Christes maesse， meaning festival of Christ。 Scholars believe the frequently used shortened form of Christmas—Xmas—may have come into use in the 13th century。 The X stands for the Greek letter chi， an abbreviation of Khristos （Christ）， and also represents the cross on which Jesus was crucified。

I didnt know there was a Christmas before.

Now， I know that Christmas is the day when Santa Claus gives presents to children.

Because there are too many homework exams， because theres too much homework to do， and when I think about Christmas this year， its December 25th night. I spoke to my mother and said， "Mom， I havent had Christmas yet."!" Mother said， "Christmas is a foreign festival， which is equivalent to our Spring Festival.". We are nothing but foreigners festivals， and we celebrate our spring festival!" I said， "but I thought too much about Christmas."! Why cant Santa just give me presents?" Mom eyeball a turn， stooping， smiling at me： "Santa Claus will also distribute the gift to you!" My eyes lit up， staring big eyes， eager to ask： "really?" Where? Where is it?" Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is credited with being responsible for introducing the custom of the Christmas tree to the British public by decorating the first English Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1841 using candles, sweets, fruit and gingerbread.

The popularity of the Christmas tree grew in Britain during the first half of the 20th century, with trees becoming bigger and more elaborately decorated with bells, baubles and tinsel. However, the onset of the Second World War resulted in a ban on cutting down trees for decoration and people resorted to having small, artificial tabletop trees bearing home made decorations. These were often taken down into the air raid shelters when the sirens sounded to provide a bit of Christmas cheer!

This all changed following the war, and large trees were erected in many public places to celebrate Christmas. The most famous of these is the tree in Trafalgar Square, London which is an annual gift from the Norwegian government to give thanks for the help they received from Britain during the war.

On Christmas morning， the children wake up very early. Some even turn on the light at two o‘clock， and most of them are awake by six o’clock although it is not light in England for another hour or two at this time of the year.

Children look for their presents ， and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one o‘clock in the afternoon， the Christmas dinner is brought in . The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten . Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it . The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas hollidays comes to an end.

在圣诞节的早晨，孩子们很早就起床。有些人甚至在两点钟的时候开灯，但大多数人还是在六点钟醒的，虽然在英国这个时间就算再过一两个小时也还没有天亮。

It is said that there was a goodness man went broke his domain. He lived a hard life and he has three daughters. The three daughters were being married but he didnt have money to buy dower for his daughters. On the happy Chrismas Eve three girls went to bed early. They didnt know that their father was so worried. At last the Chrismas father decided to help them . He besprinkled gold through the stack and the gold fell into the socks of the mans daughters. They lived a happy life from then on... Chrismas socks was origined by this.

Christmas DayChristmas Day falls on the twenty-fifth of December. It is a very happy day for many boys and girls . Before the term ends in some schools , the children act a nativity① or “birth” play, showing how Jesus② was born in a stable③。

On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready. the younger children think that Father Christmas will come down the chimney or fireplace , so they hang up a sock for him to put presents in. the GREedy ones even hang up a pillow-case④ or a sack⑤ to try to get more presents. Later that night, Father or Mother will put presents in the sock, and leave others at the side of the bed. On Christmas morning, the children wake up very early.
