不仅是巴金与冰心二人之间，他们两家人之间都是彼此亲密的好友。可这样的交往不得不在“文革”时期终止——为了不给对方、自己带来麻烦，十年光阴二人音信隔绝，直至“四人帮”被粉碎。即使如此，他们的友情也从未被隔断。1977年3月11日，巴金给冰心写了十年多来的第一封信，这封信也让二人开始了北京、上海两地间的传书。1980年，二人受邀访问日本。访问期间，76岁的巴金与80岁的冰心在晚上开怀畅谈至午夜。

此后，由于两位老人年事渐高，行动不便，他们会面次数很少。1985年后二人就完全靠书信沟通了。然而冰心仍盼望着与巴金见面，惦记着他“血压还低否？手还抖否？”巴金也是无时无刻不关心着自己的大姐。

1985年，冰心的爱人吴文藻去世。次年冰心应某公司邀请去花房赏花，此事上报后，冰心坚持让好友吴泰昌(同样也是作家)把事件细节详述给巴金，她自己的话是：“还有一些具体的细节……你告诉巴金，也让他高兴。文藻去世后，他一定担心我情绪不好。”而1999年，冰心谢世，所有人向巴金封锁了这个消息。3月的一天，巴金从抢救室转到监护病房，第一件事就是要打电话给冰心，目的是对她说“我没事”。然而当天正是冰心的骨灰由家人迎回家中的那天……点滴细节，足见两位老人几十年惺惺相惜。
