据说《智取威虎山》的导演徐克在2013年选中苏翊鸣的原因是，当初需要一个会滑雪的孩子扮演剧中“小栓子”的角色，而滑雪能力出众且形象不错的苏翊鸣，就因此得到了机会。

另有报道表示，原本剧组还曾担心苏翊鸣的演技不足，但年少的苏翊鸣在表演方面也很有天赋，很好地完成了剧组的任务，并在演艺圈崭露头角。另一个值得回味的片段则是，原本大家担心苏翊鸣滑雪太慢追不上大家，甚至剧中还有“会滑雪吗?”的台词，但事实是，苏翊鸣滑雪速度反倒是其他演员难以追赶的。

凭借在《智取威虎山》中的表现，苏翊鸣入围第35届香港金像奖最佳新人，可惜最终与奖项擦肩而过。但能够在首次入行影视就进入大名单，也是对苏翊鸣演技的认可。
