Although it is generally agreed that the Christmas tree in its current form came from Germany in the early 19th century, the tradition of decorating a tree to mark winter celebrations dates back hundreds of years to Roman times, when they used to decorate evergreen trees with small pieces of metal to celebrate Saturnalia.

In medieval times the Paradise Play was performed every year on 24 December. This depicted the creation of Man and the fall of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and always included an evergreen hung with apples which represented the apple tree of temptation.

There is a legend that St Boniface, an English monk, came upon a group of pagans gathered around an oak tree who were preparing to sacrifice a child to the God Thor. In order to stop the sacrifice, and save the childs life, St Boniface is said to have felled the tree with one blow of his fist. Later on, a fir tree grew in place of the oak and this, St Boniface told the pagans, was the Tree of Life and represented the Christ Child.

Legend also suggests that, in the late 16th century, Martin Luther (the founder of the Protestant religion) was the first to decorate an indoor tree with candles when he attempted to recreate the stars shining over a forest of evergreens.

The first mention of decorated trees being taken indoors came in 1605 in Germany - a country with a long Christmas tree history! The trees were initially decorated with fruit and sweets together with hand made objects such as quilled snowflakes and stars. German Christmas Markets began to sell shaped gingerbreads and wax ornaments which people bought as souvenirs of the fair and took home to hang on their tree.

Tinsel was also invented in Germany in about 1610. Up until fairly recently real silver was used, which was pulled into wafer thin strips by special machines. This was durable but tarnished quickly and many experiments took place to try and find an alternative - including a mix of lead and tin, which was too heavy and kept breaking. It was only in the mid 20th century that a viable alternative was found.

Artificial trees were invented in the 1880s in a bid to try and stop some of the damage being caused to real trees due to people lopping the tip off large trees, thus preventing the trees from growing any further. It got so bad in Germany that laws had to be brought in to prevent people having more than one tree.

Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is credited with being responsible for introducing the custom of the Christmas tree to the British public by decorating the first English Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1841 using candles, sweets, fruit and gingerbread.

The popularity of the Christmas tree grew in Britain during the first half of the 20th century, with trees becoming bigger and more elaborately decorated with bells, baubles and tinsel. However, the onset of the Second World War resulted in a ban on cutting down trees for decoration and people resorted to having small, artificial tabletop trees bearing home made decorations. These were often taken down into the air raid shelters when the sirens sounded to provide a bit of Christmas cheer!

This all changed following the war, and large trees were erected in many public places to celebrate Christmas. The most famous of these is the tree in Trafalgar Square, London which is an annual gift from the Norwegian government to give thanks for the help they received from Britain during the war.

Christmas Day is very popular around the world, which originates in western

country, but now it is celebrated by the world. When this big day comes, there

will be a lot of products that sold in very low prices, and the Santa Clauss

image will be seen all the street. Shops will play Christmas songs. I always

The origin of the Christmas

Christmas Day-December 25-which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of the Christian religion, is the biggest and best-loved holiday in the Christian World.

According to the Bible, the holy book of Christians, God decided to allow his only son, Jesus Christ, to be born to a human mother and live on earth so that people could understand God better and learn to love God and each other more. "Christmas"- meaning "celebration of Christ "- honors the time when Jesus was born to a young Jewish woman Mary.

Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter, but before they came together, she was found to be with child. Because Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

Although the exact date of the birth of Jesus nearly 2,000 years ago is not known, the calendar on the supposed date divides all time into B.C. (Before Christ )and A.D. ( a Latin phrase, Anno Domini, "in the year of our Lord.") For the first 300 years, Jesus birthday was celebrated on different dates. Finally, in the year 354, church leaders chose December 25 as his birthday.

Christmas is one of the most beautiful holidays of all time. It is the day when Gods sonwas born on earth. Hence, this day is sacred for all Christians around the world. The Christmas season gives rise to a number of Christmas traditions that come along. Here are a few of them that are celebrated with zest and enthusiasm worldwide for centuries.

This was an English tradition which started centuries ago. On Christmas eve, plum porridge was served to the people. As years passed, various other things like dry fruits, honey and spices we’re used. Soon this porridge got replaced with the Christmas cake. Christmas cakes are made using eggs, butter, confections, fruits,etc. Today aChristmas cake is an integral part of a Christmas menu.

This tradition comes from the story of the three wise men who got gifts for baby Jesus on Christmas. Every Christmas, gifts are exchanged among loved ones,especially children. The story of Santa Claus also comes from this tradition.  这个传统源自一个传说：三位智者在圣诞节给婴儿耶稣送出了礼物。每年圣诞节，亲朋好友尤其是孩子们都会互赠礼物，圣诞老人的故事也源自这个传统。

garlands, ornaments, candy canes, etc. Today, aChristmas tree is an indispensable part of Christmas celebration.

This refers to the tradition of placing alighted candle outside ho uses during the Christmas season. A candle signifies hope as it brings light even to the darkest room. In the earlier times, when Christians were persecuted, they were not allowed to practice prayers. Hence, a single candle used to be placed outside the house as a sign that Christian prayers were being conducted inside.

这个传统指的是人们会在圣诞期间在屋子外面放一支点燃的蜡烛。即便在最黑暗的屋子，蜡烛也能带来光明，寓意希望。早些年代，也就是基督徒深受迫害的时候，他们被禁止布道祷告。因此，基督徒们在屋外放一支蜡烛，暗示他们仍在心里默默祷告。

It refers to the age-old custom of enchanting anumber of traditional Christmas songs during the Christmas season. It adds to the joy and fun to the atmosphere. Different Christmas hymns or carols like The First Noel, Jingle Bells, Joy to the world, etcare sung every Christmas as a part of the Christmas celebration.  这是一个古老的习俗：圣诞期间总是回荡着一首又一首圣诞传统歌曲。歌曲给人们带来欢乐，也增添了节日的气氛。每年欢度圣诞之际，《第一个圣诞节》、《铃儿响叮当》、《普世欢腾》等各种圣诞圣歌或颂歌都会奏响旋律。

This is yet another age-old tradition of Christmas. A crib refers tothe Nativity Scene that is prepared using small statues. The first crib ever was made outside a church of St. Francis of Assisi f or children to show them how the Nativity scene was like. Since then, this tradition became very popular.

This is one of the most wonderful traditions of all. Christmas candies are distributed to neighbors during the Yuletide season. Onthe day of Christmas, all misunderstandings and grudges are forgotten and the community comes together to celebrate the birth of Christ.

这是所有传统中最有趣的一个。圣诞季人们向邻居们分发圣诞糖果；圣诞节那天，所有误会与仇恨统统化解，邻里之间团结一致共同庆祝耶稣的诞生。

These traditions have been carried out for decades, yet they are celebrated with more and more exuberance each year. The level of excitement has never gone down. It just keeps getting better and better with time.

这些传统沿袭已有几十年，一年比一年热闹，盛况可谓有增无减。相信随着时间的推移，人们对传统习俗的热情只会越来越高。

The American tour is over, and a little bit of the American swim through time and space tunnel, drip in my heart, printed in my mind.

America is an independent country. As for education, in China, we are all the baby in the family, holding hands in our hands, a little hurt is not willing to let us, more reluctant to stay away from our parents arms. American parents are more relaxed about their children and let them succeed with their own efforts. I saw such a scene in the United States, a baby fell down, and the babys mother didnt have as much pain as her parents in China, but taught him how to get up. At the sorran school in Los Angeles, there are many big brothers and sisters who are doing volunteer work to get credits, and they create their own world with their own hands. Our Chinese students may be little princess princesses at home. But in the United States, our landlady has made us experience our own dishes and the joys of labor. Thats how two parents of different countries have different approaches to education kids. Perhaps, the pain is some, but only temporary, but the cowardice in the heart once formed, is permanent, cannot change. This is worth learning.

American thrift is more worth learning. In China, we may be a little wasteful, but in the United States, most of the meals are buffet. There are some Chinese students who have been watching for a while. Many students take a lot of food, but many of them are wasted, and americans eat as much as they can and never waste food. My MOM is a woman who knows her life well and doesnt live in a wealthy neighborhood, but her family has always been frugal. They have three cars, an armored car, a sports car and a car. Two of them are luxury cars, and one is a Mercedes Benz in the eighties. In China, people tend to drive luxury cars, and they usually drive old cars. They have a pool where they often hold parties, so that we have the privilege of meeting more foreigners.

On the first day to Los Angeles, Xu Mingjie very lucky and I attended a local wedding, it was a very romantic wedding, under the illuminate of lamplight, a couple looks very bright. Little girls and small, well-fitted dresses add another look to the wedding.

Christianity was the bishop of the United States, and in the soslan school, it was the propaganda of Christianity. In that, although we believe in Buddhism, we respect their Christian culture, which is the highlight of Chinese students abroad. Our family still goes to church on the weekend.

In the United States, we went to shopping malls, and the shop assistants were very enthusiastic about us, and we were in that crazy shopping, invisibility, which promoted the economic development of the United States. To think about, and why the salesman students enthusiasm for China, which is not Chinas continuous development, continuous increase in the national economy, despite this, we dont it is for the welfare of the United States?

After a week of study, we went on to the east, the White House, congress, the United Nations, Wall Street, Broadway... Let us experience another American amorous feelings.

I dont think americans are as gentlemanly as British people, but there are still places to learn, and Ive benefited a lot from this trip to America.

Christmas is coming

I like Christmas, it is just like our Spring Festival.

Maybe the Spring Festival is much more important and interesting than Christmas, but I like Christmas Day better. Because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during Christmas. When it is snowy,

Christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. I can imagine I am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. What a beautiful place! So we can also call Christmas “Snowy Lovely Day.”

On Christmas Day, shops are red and green. There are so many Christmas cards, Christmas hats, Christmas dolls and many colourful things. So shops look very beautiful. We can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “Merry Christmas.” By the way, I think studying can also become much more interesting.

Christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. Let’s study harder to welcome the new year!
