法国少年皮尔从小就喜欢舞蹈，他的理想是当一名出色的舞蹈演员。可是，因为家境贫寒，维持基本生活都非常艰难的父母根本拿来不出多余的钱来送皮尔上舞蹈学校。

皮尔的父母不得不将他送去一家缝纫店当学徒工，希望他学一门手艺后能帮家里减轻点经济负担。每天在缝纫店工作十多个小时的皮尔厌恶极了这份工作，不担因为繁重的工作所得的报酬还不够他的生活费和学徒费。重要的是，他觉得自己是在虚度光阴，他为自己的理想无法实现而非常苦闷。他甚至认为，与其这样痛苦地活着，还不如早早地结束生命。

绝望中的皮尔突然想起了他从小就崇拜的有着芭蕾音乐之父美誉的布德里。皮尔觉得只有布德里才能明白他这种为艺术献身的精神的人。他决定给布德里写一封信，希望布德里能够收下他这个学生。在信的最后，他写道：如果布德里在一个星期内不回他的信，不肯收他这个学生，他便只好为艺术献身，跳河自尽了。

很快，年少倾垮的皮尔收到了布德里的回信。皮尔以为布德里被他的执着打动，答应收下他这个学生。但是信中却并没有提收他做学生的事。只是讲述自己的人生经历。布德里告诉皮尔，在他小的时候，很想当一名科学家。可是因为当时家境贫穷，父母无法送他上学，他只得跟一个街头艺人过起了卖唱的日子。最后，他说，人生在世，现实与理想总是有一定距离的人，首先要选择生存。只有好好地活下来，才能让理想之星闪闪发光。一个连自己的生命都不珍惜的人，是不配谈艺术的。

布德里的回信让皮尔猛然惊醒。后来，皮尔努力学习缝纫技术，二十三岁的那一年，在巴黎他开始了自己的时装事业。很快，他便建立了自己的公司和服装品牌，也就是如今举世闻名的皮尔卡丹公司。

由于皮尔一心扑在服装设计与经营上，皮尔卡丹公司发展迅速，皮尔在二十八岁的那一年就拥有了两百名雇员。他的顾客中很多都是世界名人。如今，皮尔卡丹品牌不仅拥有服装行业，还有服饰、钟表、眼镜、化妆品等等，皮尔卡丹不但成了令人瞩目的亿万富翁，以他的名字命名的产品也遍及全球。

皮尔卡丹一次接受时说：其实自己并不具备舞演员的素质，当舞蹈演员，只不过是年少轻狂的一个虚幻的梦而已。如果那时他不放弃当舞蹈演员的理想，就不可能有今天的皮尔卡丹。

是啊，每个年轻人都有着自己的理想，也都为自己那伟大的理想激动过，苦闷过。只有勤勤恳恳地做好身边的每一件事，脚踏实地地走好人生的每一步路，才能更快地接近理想。
