踩着夕阳的尾巴，他循着下山的路来到镇上。从中药铺出来时天色已近黄昏，在镇头，他看见一棵遒劲、枝繁叶茂的大樟树下围着一圈人。
他挤进人群，看到王大婶抱着个五六岁的男孩坐在树下的一块石头上，神色悲伤。他皱起眉头问道，“王大婶，这是怎么回事?”王大婶见是他，抹了抹眼里的泪水，带着哭腔说，“你看这孩子，小小年纪就没了爹娘，作为亲戚，我实在是爱莫能助啊!家里已经够苦了，不知道有没有好心人愿意收养啊!”
他打量了一下孩子，他蓬头垢面，瘦骨嶙峋，一副弱不禁风的样子，但一双眼睛澄澈得像一泓泉水。他觉得心里软了一些，走到他面前，俯身看着他，“你愿意跟我走吗?即使以后你要和山林为伴，即使以后你必须成为一个护林人。”
孩子倒也不胆怯，抬起脸来看着他，并没有说话。
“如果愿意，就跟我走吧。”说着，他朝孩子伸出了手。
男孩犹豫了一下，将小手放入了他宽厚的手掌。
他朝王大婶笑笑，“放心吧，孩子交给我，以后你还可以常去看他。”
夜色里，他带着孩子走回自己的小屋。
“从此以后，你的一生都将和这山林难舍难分。你的责任就是守护好它，知道吗?”他的声音落在小路上。
“知道。”尚显稚嫩的童声回答他。
不久，屋里响起一轻一重两种鼾声。
小张做了一个梦。
在那个特殊的年代，他也像这个男孩般大，亲人带着他离开家乡逃荒。快到山下的那座小镇时，双亲饿死在路边。在他无助的时候，一个姓张的老人收留了他。
那个老人说：“你愿意跟我走吗?即使以后你要和山林为伴，即使以后你必须成为一个护林人。”
他答应了。
后来，他真的成为了守林人，并且爱上了这座山里的一切。虽然他不姓张，但别人都叫他小张。
外面树梢上猫头鹰凄厉的叫声将他吵醒，他看到月光从窗外射进来，屋子里清亮亮的一片。
他知道，屋外的山林也笼罩在这如水的月光中。
他看了一眼睡得很香的男孩，心里也像月光一样明亮起来，他仿佛看到一个叫小小张的守林人向自己走来。
