到了明清，“以彩绳穿钱编为龙形，谓之压岁钱。尊长之赐小儿者，亦谓压岁钱”。所以一些地方把给孩子压岁钱叫“串钱”。到了近代则演变为红纸包一百文铜钱赐给晚辈，寓意“长命百岁”。对已成年的晚辈红纸包里则放一枚银元，寓意“一本万利”。货币改为纸币后，长辈们喜欢到银行兑换票面号码相连的新钞票给孩子，祝愿孩子“连连高升”。

2、源于古代“压惊”。说是太古时有一种凶兽叫“年”，隔365日后之夜，就要出来伤害人畜、庄稼。小孩子害怕，大人则以燃竹响声驱“年”，用食品安慰小孩，即为“压惊”。年久日深，便演变为以货币代食物，至宋便有“压惊钱”。据史载，王韶子南陔，因被坏人背走，于途中惊呼，才被皇车所救，宋神宗即赐了他“压惊金犀钱”。以后才发展为“压岁钱”。

压岁钱，汉族年俗，寓意辟邪驱鬼，保佑平安。压岁钱最初的用意是镇恶驱邪。因为人们认为小孩容易受鬼祟的侵害，所以用压岁钱压祟驱邪，帮助小孩平安过年，祝愿小孩在新的一年健康吉利、平平安安。

春节拜年时，长辈要将事先准备好的压岁钱放进红包分给晚辈，相传压岁钱可以压住邪祟，因为"岁"与"祟"谐音，晚辈得到压岁钱就可以平平安安度过一岁。

压岁钱一般在新年倒计时时由长辈分给晚辈，表示压岁(压祟)。

在历史上，压岁钱是分两种的，其中一种就是晚辈给老人的，这个压岁钱的"岁"指的是年岁，意在期盼老人长寿。
