My life in the University of Education

How time flies! It has been about two years since I came to the University of Education. Every coin has two sides. On the one hand, I am quite satisfied with my university life. On the other hand, life in my university is not as satisfactory as what we had expected.

University is not only a place where you can learn something useful from textbooks, but also a place where you can improve your ability to communicate with others.

During the year university study, I can not only acquire a lot of book learning, but also foster various abilities. 《中庸》二十五章：“诚者非自成己而已也，所以成物也。成己，仁也;成物，知也。性之德也，合外内之道也，故时措之宜也”。可结合《中庸》此章来领会《大学》三纲领之义理。

“明明德”向内成己，是内圣功夫，“亲民”向外成物，是外王事业，“止于至善”则是“合外内之道也”。阳明先生曰：“明明德必在于亲民，而亲民乃所以明其明德也，故曰一也”。

程子曰：“亲，当作新”;“‘在新民’者，使人用此道以自新”。然“使人用此道以自新”，只是“教”而不“养”。阳明曰：“孔子言‘修己以安百姓’，‘修己’便是‘明明德’，‘安百姓’便是‘亲民’。说亲民便是兼教、养意，说新民便觉偏了”。“亲民”是以自性之明德直接养民、化民，有“仁者与天地万物为一体”之义，如此才能把三纲领贯通为一。

《荀子·子道》：

子路入，子曰：“由!知者若何?仁者若何?”子路对曰：“知者使人知己，仁者使人爱己。”子曰：“可谓士矣”。

子贡入，子曰：“赐!知者若何?仁者若何?”子贡对曰：“知者知人，仁者爱人。”子曰：“可谓士君子矣。”

颜渊入，子曰：“回!知者若何?仁者若何?”颜渊对曰：“知者自知，仁者自爱。”子曰：“可谓明君子矣。”

“知者使人知己，仁者使人爱己”，这是“教”。

如果把“亲民”当作“新民”，只是停留在“士”的层次，达不到大人之“学”的境界。“知者知人，仁者爱人”，这是明明德以亲民，阳明所谓“兼教、养意”。颜子说“知者自知，仁者自爱”，能尽其性，则能尽人之性，故不必再说知人、爱人。

朱子曰，“明明德于天下者，使天下之人皆有以明其明德也”。朱子下一个“使”字，把尽己之性与尽人之性割裂开，从而把“明明德于天下”也解得浅了。阳明说：“明明德者，立其天地万物一体之体也;亲民者，达其天地万物一体之用也”。

绍兴知府南大吉听到阳明先生讲解大人之“学”如醍醐灌顶，喟然叹曰：“甚哉，大人之学若是其简易也!吾乃今知天地万物之一体矣，[]吾乃今知天下之为一家、中国之为一人矣。‘一夫不被其泽，若己推而内诸沟中’，伊尹其先得我心之同然乎”?又曰：“吾以亲民为职者也，吾务亲吾之民以求明吾之明德也夫!”

平天下，治国，齐家，修身，正心，诚意，致知，格物，此为《大学》八条目。

朱子说：“修身以上，明明德之事也;齐家以下，新(亲)民之事也”。

《论语·宪问》：

子路问君子。子曰：“修己以敬”。曰：“如斯而已乎?”曰：“修己以安人。”曰：“如斯而已乎?”曰：“修己以安百姓。修己以安百姓，尧、舜其犹病诸”!

可结合《论语》此章来领会《大学》八条目的内涵。格物、致知、诚意、正心、修身，均是“修己以敬”;齐家、治国、平天下，为“修己以安人”、“修己以安百姓”。

唐代李翱根据《中庸》《易传》作《复性书》，阐述儒家心性学说。李翱不满意东汉郑玄所注《中庸》：“彼以事解者也，我以心通者也”。同样，研读《大学》也要默识心通，不能停留在“事”上。如“平天下”是“明明德于天下”，依此类推，“治国”是“明明德于国”，“齐家”是“明明德于家”，三者均是德性由内而外的扩充，与其说是在谈政事，不如说是在论心性，《系辞》所谓“举而错之天下之民谓之事业”。

子路问君子，孔子先说“修己以敬”。针对子路发出“如斯而已乎”的疑问，孔子又说“修己以安人”、“修己以安百姓”，显然，三者境界不同。《中庸》曰“致广大而尽精微”，“广大”与“精微”是相辅相成的，能“博施于民而能济众”，则心性功夫也是精微至极。从齐家、治国到平天下，外王事业越广大，内圣功夫越精微。《大学》与《论语》区分内圣与外王，并且阐述得层次分明，《中庸》与《孟子》则说得更简洁。孟子曰“君子之守，修其身而天下平”，《中庸》曰“君子笃恭而天下平”，人我内外合一，本末一以贯之。

Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre. But my first impression of this story was from screen.

Its long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I dont remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. Its pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine,though I didnt think shes beautiful. But shes smart. However, I didnt pay much attention to the plot. I thought its so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I havent read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.

In fact, I didnt understand the story at that time. I didnt know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didnt find where s the prejudice. I thought its normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. Im a prejudiced person so I cant find wheres wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time. I like it so just like it, if not so just not. Im a person thinking by heart not by brain. What is worse, I actually didnt think its wrong. I thought everyone is all like that.Everyone has his special way to cognize the world. So its individuality, not prejudice. But I think something is wrong. Though everyone can judge in the way he likes, he cant ignore other ones. You can like what you like and hate what you hate, but you should be objective when you meet external world. I think it means that you should consider things roundly, not just partial. Individuality is different from prejudice. What is it? I need to think more.
