The international workers day, also known as May day, is celebrated on the first day on May. There are more than eighty countries celebrate this festival since 1889. People may know that the workers day is about having a rest on that day, but most of them dont know how this day comes from and the story behind it.

In the late of 18 century, the cruel capitalists in order to make more money, they demanded their employers to work all day, but only paid them with low salaries. In America, the workers had to work at least 14 hours a day, sometimes, they even worked as long as 18 hours. Due to the unfair payment, the works knew that they had to stand up and fight for their rights, or all of them will die young. Then the workers started to go on strike, demanded that the reasonable working hours should be 8 hours a day. However, the capitalists did not pay attention to the workers demand. The workers had to fight for their rights for themselves. On may 1st, 1886, the United States and Canadas worker unions got together to start the biggest strike. After that day, the law had passed the rules that the workers working hours would be 8 hours per day. This strike had made a different. The worker did not need to suffer from the long working hours with low payment.

The international workers day aims to memorize the spirit of brave and show our honor to the former workers. Because they had make great contribution to todays happiness.

the origin of halloween

while there are many versions of the origins and old customs of halloween, some remain consistent by all accounts. different cultures view holloween somewhat differently but traditional halloween practices remain the same.

halloween culture can be traced back to the druids, a celtic culture in ireland, britain and northern europe. roots lay in the feast of samhain, which was annually on october 31st to honor the dead.

samhain signifies "summers end" or november. samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the celtic year and beginning of a new one. many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.

the celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. this custom evolved into trick-or-treating.

The eight-treasure porridge was first introduced to China in the Song Dynasty about 900 years ago.

Buddhism was well accepted in the areas inhabited by the Han Chinese, who believed that Sakyamuni, the first Buddha and founder of the religion, attained enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth month. Sutras were chanted in the temples and rice porridge with beans, nuts and dried fruit was prepared for the Buddha. With the passing of time the custom extended, especially in rural areas where peasants would pray for a plentiful harvest in this way.

There is, however, another touching story: When Sakyamuni was on his way into the high mountains in his quest for understanding and enlightenment, he grew tired and hungry. Exhausted from days of walking, he passed into unconsciousness by a river in India. A shepherdess found him there and fed him her lunch -- porridge made with beans and rice. Sakyamuni was thus able to continue his journey. After six years of strict discipline, he finally realized his dream of full enlightenment on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. Ever since, monks have prepared rice porridge on the eve and held a ceremony the following day, during which they chant sutras and offer porridge to Buddha. Thus, the tradition of eating Laba porridge was based in religion, though with the passing of time the food itself became a popular winter dish especially in cold northern China.

According to written records, large Buddhist temples would offer it to the poor to show their faith to Buddha. In the Ming Dynasty about 500 years ago, it became such a holy food that emperors would offer it to their officials during festivals. As it gained favor in the feudal upper class, it also quickly became popular throughout the country.

"Halloween"

很多民族都在万圣节前夜有庆典聚会,因此这一天又被叫做“All Hallow Een”、“The Eve of All Hallows”、“Hallow een”,或者“The eve of All SaintasDay”。

The foreign language teacher showed us the dishes. I was watching with relish, the foreign language teacher ran up behind me and shouted, "ah... "I was scared out of my skin.

They took out a large bag of sugar and sprinkled it, and the sweets fell down like raindrops, and we rushed over them with lightning speed.

《DEVILS NIGHT》

Dont go out on Devils Night.

Stay in your bed and keep on the light.

Little demons and ghouls have their fun all right,

outside on the streets this Devils Night.

You dont want to know what mischief they cause.

On Halloween Eve they run without pause,

flying and laughing, and breaking the laws,

you really dont want to see the mischief theyve caused.

Please heed my words, stay under the covers,

and tell your friends and your sisters, and of course your brothers.

Stay in bed, dont even peek through the shutters,

cause a goblin or ghost may spook you to stutters.

Just wait until daybreak on Halloween Day,

when you know all the ghouls and ghosts are away.

They hate the daylight, "its no fun," they say.

So just please, please wait to Trick or Treat on Halloween Day.

Children in costumes race from house to house asking for treats. A carved pumpkin, called a jack-o-lantern, grins from a porch as the children pass. According to legend, jack-o-lanterns protect people in their homes from ghostly spirits.

Its all part of the fun on Halloween! The roots of Halloween stretch back thousands of years and borrow customs from several parts of the world.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31. By tradition, Halloween begins after sunset. Long ago, people believed that witches gathered together and ghosts roamed the world on Halloween. Today, most people no longer believe in ghosts and witches. But these supernatural beings are still a part of Halloween.

The colors black and orange are also a part of Halloween. Black is a symbol for night and orange is the color of pumpkins. A jack-o-lantern is a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved on one side. Candles are usually placed inside, giving the face a spooky glow.

Dressing in masks and costumes is a popular Halloween activity. Costumes can be traditional and scary, such as a witchs pointy hat and black gown. Costumes may also have a modern flavor. Many children dress up as movie characters or a favorite superhero.

But Halloween is not just for children. Many adults enjoy showing off their costumes at Halloween parties!

Once in costume, children go from house to house saying Trick or treat! In the past, children might play a trick on people who did not give treats. They might pelt houses with eggs or old tomatoes, or play other pranks. Today, childrens cries of Trick or treat! are usually rewarded with candy.

One of the oldest Halloween traditions comes from the ancient Celts, who lived in western and central Europe long ago. The Celts celebrated a holiday

y called Sa amhain on October 31. After sunset that day, people believed that spirits of the dead would rise and walk the earth. The Celts made offerings of food and drink to keep the spirits away.

Beginning about 2,000 years ago, the Roman Empire conquered many Celtic peoples. But Celtic traditions, including Samhain, remained strong in areas such as Ireland and Scotland, even after the Roman conquest.

The Roman Catholic Church tried to replace Samhain in 835 with All Saints Day, a day to honor saints of the Church. The eve of All Saints Day is October 31. It is called Allhallows or Hallowmas by the Church.

Halloween first came to America with early settlers from Celtic areas in Europe, such as Ireland and Scotland. But other American settlers with strict religious beliefs, including the Puritans from England, rejected Halloween. The arrival of many Irish immigrants during the 1800s helped spread Halloweens popularity.

But by the late 1800s, fewer people believed in ancient superstitions of ghosts and witches. Halloween became more a holiday for children to receive treats and dress in costume.
