【译文】富贵不能乱了我的心，贫贱不能改变我的志向，威武不能屈我的节，这样才叫做大丈夫。

（6）说大人则藐之，勿视其巍巍然。

【译文】向诸侯进言，就得轻视他，不要把他高高在上的位置放在眼里。

（7）故天将降大任于是人也，必先苦其心志，劳其筋骨，饿其体肤，空乏其心，行拂乱其所为，所以动心忍性，曾益其所不能。

【译文】天将要把重要的任务加到某人的身上，一定要先苦恼他的心意，劳动他的筋骨，饥饿他的肠胃，穷困他的身子，他的每一行为总是不如意，这样便可以震动他的心意，坚韧他的性情，增加他的能力。

（8）老吾老以及人之老，幼吾幼以及人之幼。

【译文】在赡养孝敬自己的长辈时不应忘记其他与自己没有亲缘关系的老人。在抚养教育自己的小辈时不应忘记其他与自己没有血缘关系的小孩。

（9）爱人者，人恒爱之；敬人者，人恒敬之。

【译文】爱别人的人，会受到别人的爱；尊敬别人的人，会受到别人尊敬。

（10）不挟长，不挟贵，不挟兄弟而友。

【译文】交朋友时，不依仗自己年纪大，不仗恃自己地位高，不依仗自己兄弟们富贵。

（11）贤者以其昭昭使人昭昭，今以其昏昏使人昭昭。

【译文】贤能的人，一定是自己先明白了再使人明白；今天的人自己还在糊涂却硬要叫人明白。

（12）心之官则思，思则得之，不思则不得也。

【译文】心这个器官职在思考，思考才能获得，不思考便不能获得。

（13）生于忧患而死于安乐也。

【译文】忧愁患害足以使人生存，安逸快乐足以使人死亡。

孟子（公元前372年―前289年），名轲，字子舆，中国古代著名的思想家和教育家，儒家学派的重要代表。他是战国时期的邹国人，出生在邹国（今山东省邹城市）马鞍山下的凫村（凫村1960年划归曲阜市）。

孟子是鲁国贵族孟孙氏的后代，约在祖辈时迁于邹。三岁时，他父亲孟孙激去逝，全靠母亲仉氏教养。史书中记有孟母三迁教子、断机喻学的佳话。孟子从小立志学儒习礼，15岁左右，他入学读书，“受业于子思（孔子之孙）之门人”，上承孔子、子思之学。

孟轲的性善论是他“仁政”学说的基础，也是他教育理论的根据。他认为人性是与生俱来的，人生来就具有“善端”，也就是有为善的倾向。这些“善端”是天赋的，为心中固有的。因此，又叫“良知”。

孟子的心性论

1.性善与四端 —— 道德价值的根源

孟子的「性善说」， 主要发挥孔子「仁」的观念。孔子中的「仁」缺乏了理论基础及尚未解释「道德价值根源」的问题。因此， 孔子要建立「道德价值根源之自觉心」， 认为善是人的基本自觉， 这种自觉是表现於恻隐、羞恶、辞让及是非四端。「四端」说明道德价值的自觉， 是与生俱来的。这便能补充孔子「仁」学理论的不足。

2.义利之辨 —— 道德价值的论证

孟子认为「四端」是内在於自觉心的， 属於人的「本质」， 即所谓人的「性」。人之性， 必有异於禽兽之处， 这种「异於禽兽」的性，  便是「善端」。他指出， 人之所以不善， 是由於受私欲蒙蔽。因此， 人应放弃私利， 以达到社会的公义。目的是建立良好的个人道德观。

3.养气与成德

孟子提出必须靠修养及发挥善性的功夫， 以全力扩充存於内心的「四端」， 孟子称之为「尽性」。「尽性」的修养， 培养出浩然之气， 使人成为「富贵不能淫， 贫贱不能移， 威武不能屈」的「大丈夫」， 再以「心志统气」， 控制自己的情感， 便能成德。

4.道德天

孟子认为现实世界是道德的世界， 而道德根源背后的标准， 便是「天」， 「天」表现于人， 便是「性」。人苦能有足够修养， 便能知天， 达致「天人合一」。
