我看那巴陵郡的好景色，都在洞庭湖上。连接着远处的山脉，吞吐着长江的流水，水波浩荡的样子，宽阔无边；或早或晚（一天里）阴晴多变化，景象变化无穷无尽。这就是岳阳楼的雄伟景象啊，前人的记述（已经）很详尽。既然如此，那么北面通向巫峡，南边直到潇水湘水，降职远调的人和诗人，大多在这里会聚，看自然景物而触发的感情，大概会有所不同吧？
