就是这样一位众人眼中的小人物却在地球另一端的美国创办了一家特殊的网站。之所以说它特殊，是因为在这个界面简陋的网站上，随便输入任何一个汉字，人们都可以找到它的字形在历史上演变的过程——小篆、金文，甚至还能回溯几千年，看到它被刻在甲骨上的模样。这样的汉字字源网站即便是在中国，也绝无仅有，更不要提在大洋彼岸的美国。由于网站在网络上被广为传播，它的创办者——那位满头白发的美国老人，也一时间成为热门人物。甚至被网络称为：2011年，第一个感动中国的外国人。

网站的火爆是他所没想到的，更令他没想到的是自己会因网站而成名，在他60岁的花甲之年。为了创建那个网站，他花费了20年的时间和全部的存款，他身边的朋友和家人却几乎没有人觉得，那是一件有意义的工作。20年的时间很漫长，在漫长的时间长河里，他一个人在寂寞中坚持着……

他就是理查德·希尔斯(RichardSears)，家住美国田纳西州的一位普通老人。38年前，当希尔斯突发奇想开始学中文时，这个物理系的大学生只是希望了解那些说别的语言的人会如何思考、交流。他来到了台湾，在街头拼命跟人聊天，并且在那里结识了自己后来的妻子。

口语练好了，希尔斯又开始张罗着学认字。可是那些毫无逻辑的汉字笔画总是让他一头雾水。于是，这个已经步入中年的男人再一次“突发奇想”，研究起了古汉字。

可在英文书籍里，关于汉语古文字的书籍只有一本。并且，关于词源的解释，不同的书籍也不相同。希尔斯又琢磨着把不同的解释都输入电脑，这样自己就可以很方便地从中挑选出最符合自己的词源。为此，他先开发了一个小程序，到了2003年，又把它们搬上了互联网。

现实里的希尔斯是一位电脑工程师，年轻的时候，他在硅谷的一家IT公司拿着一份不错的薪水，也就是那个时候，他雇用了一位中国妇女，教她用电脑，并且从几百本书里把汉字不同的字形扫描到电脑里。但现在，这个曾经一身结实肌肉的帅小伙，已经身材发福、头发花白。

在希尔斯眼中，有些东西比金钱更加重要，只可惜很多人没有看到这一点。身边的人们几乎没人能理解他的坚持，其中也包括他最终选择离婚的妻子。
