The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens. They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating mans behavior.

People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distillers grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.

The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure3 them into traps and cursed:"Humph! Do you think we dont know your tricks? Well never be taken in!"

So they called one another, turned round and left.

But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldnt bear to part with it. Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, they would turn back; and after they turned back, they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation5, they finally said to themselves: "Just for a taste of the wine. It wont matter as long as we dont get drunk."

Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, they forgot everything. Every gorilla1 put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.

As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read Beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason to frown, For the world was intent on dragging me down.

And if that weren‘t enough to ruin my day, A young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down And said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, With its petals all worn - not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away.

But instead of retreating he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with surprise, "It sure smells pretty and it‘s beautiful, too. That‘s why I picked it; here, it‘s for you."

The weed before me was dying or dead. Not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."

But instead of him placing the flower in my hand, He held it mid-air without reason or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time, that weed-toting boy could not see: he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver, tears shone like the sun. As I thanked him for picking the very best one. "You‘re welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play, Unaware of the impact he‘d had on my day.

I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps from his heart, he‘d been blessed with true sight.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see, the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see beauty, and appreciate every second that‘s mine.

And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose And smiled as that young boy, another weed in his hand About to change the life of an unsuspecting old man.

Human growth is a process of experimentation, trial, and error ultimately leading to wisdom。 Each time you choose to trust yourself and take action, you can never quite be certaion how the situation will turn out。 Sometimes you are victorious, and sometimes you become disillusioned。

The failed experiments, however, are no less valuable than the experiments that ultimately prove successful; in fact, you usually learn more from your perceived "failures" than you do from your perceived "success"。

If you have made what you perceive to be a mistake or failed to live up to your own expectations, you will most likely put up a barrier between your essence and the part of you that is the alleged wrong—doer。 However, perceiving past actions as mistakes implies guilt and blame, and it is not possible to learn anything meaning while you are engaged in blaming。 Therefore, forgiveness is required when you are harshly judging yourself。

Forgiveness is the act of erasing an emotional debt。 There are four kinds of forgiveness。

The first is beginner forgiveness for yourself。

The second of forgiveness is beginner forgiveness for another。

The third kind of forgiveness is advanced forgiveness of yourself。 This is for serious transgressions, the ones you carry with deep shame when you do soimething that violates your own values and ethics, you create a chasm between your standards and your actual behavior。 In such a case, you need to work very hard at forgiving youeself for these deeds so that yo call close this chasm and realign with the best part of yourself。

This does not mean that you should rush to forgive yourselfor not feel regret or remorse; but wallowing in these feelings for a protracted period of time is not healthy, and punishing yourself excessively will only creats a bigger gap between you and your ethics。

The last and perhaps most difficult one is the advanced forgiveness of another。 At some time of our life, you may have been severely wronged or hurt by another person to such a degree that forgiveness seems impossible。 However, harboring resentment and revenge fantasies only keeps you trapped in victim hood。 Under such a circumstance, you should force yourself to see the bigger picture, by so doing, you will be able to shift the focus away from the anger and resentment。

It is only through forgiveness that you can erase wrongdoing and clean the memory。 when you can finally release the situation, you may come to see it as a necessary part of your growth。

It happened that the cat met Mr. Fox in the woods. She thought, "He is intelligent and well experienced, and is highly regarded in the world," so she spoke to him in a friendly manner, "Good-day, my dear Mr. Fox. How is it going? How are you? How are you getting by in these hard times?"

The fox, filled with arrogance, examined the cat from head to feet, and for a long time did not know whether he should give an answer. At last he said, "Oh, you poor beard-licker, you speckled fool, you hungry mouse hunter, what are you thinking? Have you the nerve to ask how I am doing? What do you know? How many tricks do you understand?"

"I understand but one," answered the cat, modestly.

"What kind of a trick is it?" asked the fox.

"When the dogs are chasing me, I can jump into a tree and save myself."

"Is that all?" said the fox. "I am master of a hundred tricks, and in addition to that I have a sackful of cunning. I feel sorry for you. Come with me, and I will teach you how one escapes from the dogs."

Just then a hunter came by with four dogs. The cat jumped nimbly up a tree, and sat down at its top, where the branches and foliage completely hid her.

"Untie your sack, Mr. Fox, untie your sack," the cat shouted to him, but the dogs had already seized him, and were holding him fast.

"Oh, Mr. Fox," shouted the cat. "You and your hundred tricks are left in the lurch. If you been able to climb like I can, you would not have lost your life."

Covering Ones Ears While Stealing a Bell

Mr. Wang thinks he is clever, but he always does [en]foolish

things.[/en]

One day he sees a beautiful bell at the top of a door. "Oh! How nice! I will take it home." He thinks, "What can I do?" After a while he has a "good" idea. "Aha! I have an idea now. I can plug my ears. Then I will not hear the ring when I take off the bell."

Then he does so. But as soon as he takes off the bell, the owner opens the door. "What are you doing?" the owner says angrily.

At the time when Fan, a nobleman of the state of Jin, became a fugitive, a commoner found a bell and wanted to carry it off on his back.

But the bell was too big for him.

[/en]When he tried to knock it into pieces with a hammer there was a loud clanging sound. [/en]

He was afraid that someone will hear the noise and take the bell from him, so he immediately stopped his own ears.

To worry about other people hearing the noise is understandable, but to worry about himself hearing the noise (as if stopping his own ears would prevent other people from hearing) is absurd.

The countryside was lovely. It was summer. The wheat was golden and the oats were still

green. The hay was stacked in the low-lying meadows. There lay great woods around the fields and meadows.

There were deep lakes in the midst of the woods. In the sunniest spot stood an old mansion surrounded by a deep moat.

Great leaves grew from the vines on the walls of the house right down to the waters edge.

Some of the leaves were so big that a child could use them as an umbrella.

In the depths of a forest a duck was sitting in her nest. Her little ducklings were about to be hatched.

At last one egg after another began to crack." Cheep, cheep!" the ducklings said." Quack, quack!" said the duck.

" How big the world is!" said all the young ones.

But the biggest egg was still there. And then she settled herself on the nest again.

"Well, how are you getting on?" said an old duck who came to pay her a visit." This egg is taking such a long time," answered the sitting duck."

The shell will not crack, but the others are the finest ducklings. They are like their father."

"let me look at the egg which wont crack," said the old duck." You may be sitting on a turkeys egg!

I have been cheated like that once. Yes. its a turkeys egg!

You had better leave it alone and teach the other children to swim."

"I will sit on it a little longer."

At last the big egg cracked. How big and ugly the baby was! " That is a very big duckling." she said,

" None of the others look like that. Can he be a turkeys chick?

I will soon find out. I will make him go into water."

The next day the mother duck with her family went down to the moat. She said, and one duckling jumped in after another.

The big ugly one swam about with them." No, that is no turkey," she said," Quack, quack! Now come with me

and I will take you into the world. Keep close to me all the time. Be careful of the cat!"

The first day passed, and everything was fine.

Afterwards, matters grew worse and worse. The poor duckling was chased and harassed by all the ducklings because he was very ugly.

The ducks bit him, the hens pecked him. and the girl who fed them kicked him aside. Then he ran off and soon came to a great marsh where the wild ducks lived.

He was so tired and miserable that he stayed there the whole night.

In the morning the wild ducks flew up to see their new friend." You are very ugly," said the wild ducks," but that does not matter to us."

He stayed there two whole days . And then two wild geese came.

Just at that moment the sound of "Bang! Bang!" was heard, and both the wild geese fell dead among the reeds.

It was a terrible shock to the poor duckling.

A big dog appeared close beside him. He showed his sharp teeth and went on without touching him.

"Oh, thank Heaven! I am so ugly that even the dog wont bite me!"

sighed the duckling.

In the evening he reached a little cottage where an old woman lived with her cat and her hen.

Her eyesight was not good, and she thought the duckling was a fat duck.

"I will be rich if I have duck eggs," she said.

So she took in the duckling for three weeks, but he laid no eggs. The cat was the master of the house

and the hen was the mistress.

"Can you lay eggs?" asked the hen.

"No," answered the duckling.

"Then you had better go out into the wide world," said the cat. So away went the duckling.

One evening the sun was just setting when a flock of beautiful large birds appeared out of the bushes.

The duckling thought," Ive never seen anything so beautiful."

They were dazzlingly white with long necks. They were swans.

He did not know what the birds were.

The winter was so bitterly cold that the duckling swam about in the water to keep himself from freezing.

The sun began to shine warmly again. The larks were singing and beautiful spring had come.

Then, all at once, the duckling raised his wings and they flapped with much greater strength than before.

Before he knew it, he found himself in a large garden where the apple trees were in

full blossom and long branches of lilacs overhung the shores of the lake.

Just in front of him he saw three beautiful white swans swimming towards him.

"I will fly to them and they will hack me to pieces because I am so ugly.

But it doesnt matter. I would rather be killed by them than be bitten by the ducks or pecked by the hens."

So he flew into the water and swam towards the swans. They saw him and darted towards him.

"Kill me! Oh, kill me!" said the poor duckling,

and he waited for his death bowing his head towards the water.

But what did he see in the clear water? He was no longer a dark gray ugly bird.

He was himself a swan!

Some children came into the garden with corn and pieces of bread, which they threw into the water.

The smallest child shouted with joy," There is a new one."

The other children shouted, "Yes, a new one has come."

He said to himself,

" I never dreamed that I could be so happy when I was the ugly duckling!"
