While Paris may hold the official title, the City of Lights is better represented by Americas Playground,Las Vegas. This notorious hedonist destination offers visitors every opportunity to make it or break it,beckoning them with pulsating neon and the chance to win big,not to mention plenty of great restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping venues where you can proudly flaunt your winnings.Theres no question as to why Las Vegas was given the nickname,Americas Playground. From casinos to wildlife reserves, dance clubs to dance performances, entertainment is not lacking here. There are plenty of ways to spend your days (and nights),some of which wont cost you a thing. If youre in Vegas, you must visit a few of the massive casinos strewn throughout the city and centralized along the Strip. But gambling isnt the only thing to do here:The city houses numerous spas, performance venues, clubs and even kid-friendly attractions. There are even other diversions attached to the casinos -- you can take a gondola ride at the Venetian, check out the view atop Paris Eiffel Tour or enjoy the fantastic fountain show at the Bellagio. You should also swing by the Fremont Street Experience (also known as FSE) in downtown Las Vegas,a five-block pedestrian walkway that hosts free concerts and performances throughout the week.

Last year, my parents and I arrived in the United States on the other side of the ocean, living in Chicago, the third largest city in the United States. The city life there is very different from the city life in China.

Special one: building

Most people in China live in public housing or apartments, and there are not so many people in the United States. People usually live in semi-detached houses. The left half of the family, the right half the other family, or up and down two families, the economy many people live in the independent house. The two houses are not large, usually made of beautiful bricks, and the first floor has steps to connect the ground and houses, and the houses are numbered with metal. There was a small garden around the house, with lush trees and green grass, and some tables and chairs. There is a fence outside the garden, a password lock on the fence, someone with a key to the password can go in, so its safe to live in it.

Special 2: traffic

Car penetration in China is lower than in the u.s., where most Chinese residents take public transportation, and almost every home in the United States has a car. Why? Thats because the United States was designed as a big car in the first place. The roads are designed to be spacious and the garage is so much designed that there are few traffic jams or parking Spaces in the United States. Back in China, there are no seats left for the training courses, and the half way is still stuck on the high shelf, so it must get up early to be not late.

Winter in the United States, people dont have to wear thick wool pants and a sweater, because indoor central heating in the winter, go out is given priority to with the car, go out just get in the car, the car also has air conditioning, so dont feel cold. Its kind of like our northeast China.

Special 3: diet

You must be very fond of pizza and cookies. These are the snacks that everyone enjoys during the break. But why eat well and sometimes not to eat? Thats because americans eat high-calorie foods, such as a pizza, so they eat them for dinner. Americans pay more attention to the nutrition of food, like to eat high-protein things, and also like to eat very sweet snack, so you cant burn Chinese food in the United States can only eat these things all day long!

You see how different Chinas urban life is from the American city life!

Author: fourth grade Chen

Comments: the author introduces the life of the United States and China in the way of small title, which is clear and emphases. If you can express your feelings in the introduction, it will bring you closer to the reader.

American eating is funny. They eat almost everything with a fork, and it appears that holding a knife in ones right hand longer than a few seconds is considered to be against good table manners.

The system is that if it is absolutely necessary to use a knife, people take the fork in their left hand, and cut off a piece of meat or whatever it is in the normal manner. Then they put the knife down, transfer the fork to their right hand, and only then do they transport the food to their mouth. This is clearly ludicrous(滑稽可笑), but it is considered good manners.

There are several results of this system. First, if it is not absolutely necessary to use a knife, Americans dont use one, because obviously this greatly complicates(使复杂化) things, and you will therefore see them trying to cut things like potatoes, fish and even bacon(熏猪肉) with a fork. Second, towards the end of a course, since only one implement(器具) is being used, food has to bo chased around the plate with the fork - and for the last mouthful the thumb has to be used to keep the food in place, although one is not supposed to do this.

Third, tables are generally laid with one knife and two forks, the outside fork being for the salad. There is no need for foreign visitors to follow the American system and try to eat the salad with only a fork, but if you do use your knife, remerber to save it for the meat course. Even desserts(甜食) (except ice cream) are eaten with a fork if at all possible, and the spoon you see by your dessert is meant to be for coffee (but if you use it for your dessert no one will say anything).

The United States of America, also known as the United States, the U.S., the U.S.A., and America, is a country in North America that shares land borders with Canada and Mexico, and a sea border with Russia. Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, the United States is a federal republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C.

The present-day continental United States has been inhabited for at least 15,000 years by indigenous tribes.[1] After European exploration and settlement in the 16th century, the English established their own colonies—and gained control of others that had been begun by other European nations—in the eastern portion of the continent in the 17th and early 18th centuries. On 4 July 1776, at war with Britain over fair governance, thirteen of these colonies declared their independence. In 1783, the war ended in British acceptance of the new nation. Since then, the country has more than quadrupled in size: it now consists of 50 states and one federal district; it also has numerous overseas territories.

At over 3.7 million square miles (over 9.5 million km²), the U.S. is the third or fourth largest country by total area, depending on whether the disputed areas of China are included. It is the worlds third most populous nation, with nearly 300 million people.

The United States has maintained a liberal democratic political system since it adopted its Articles of Confederation on 1 March 1781 and the Constitution, the Articles replacement, on 17 September 1787. American military, economic, cultural, and political influence increased throughout the 20th century; with the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, the nation emerged as the worlds sole remaining superpower.[2] Today, it plays a major role in world affairs.

The earliest known use of the name America is from 1507, when a globe and a large map created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in Saint-Die-des-Vosges described the combined continents of North and South America. Although the origin of the name is uncertain[3], the most widely held belief is that expressed in an accompanying book, Cosmographiae Introductio, which explains it as a feminized version of the Latin name of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (Americus Vespucius); in Latin, the other continents names were all feminine. Vespucci theorized, correctly, that Christopher Columbus, on reaching islands in the Caribbean Sea in 1492, had come not to India but to a "New World".

The Americas were also known as Columbia, after Columbus, prompting the name District of Columbia for the land set aside as the U.S. capital. Columbia remained a popular name for the United States until the early 20th century, when it fell into relative disuse; but it is still used poetically and appears in various names and titles. A female personification of the country is also called Columbia; she is similar to Britannia.[4][5][6][7] Columbus Day, a holiday in the U.S. and other countries in the Americas commemorating Columbus October 1492 landing.

The term "united States of America" was first used officially in the Declaration of Independence, adopted on 4 July 1776. On 15 November 1777, the Second Continental Congreadopted the Articles of Confederation, the first of which stated "The Stile of this Confederacy shall be The United States of America."

The adjectival and demonymic forms for the United States are American, a point of controversy among some.

To be an American is, as Henry James famously observed, a complex fate. But complexity was that rococo masters stock-in-trade, which may explain why he returned to his native country in 1904 after an absence of more than 20 years. To be sure, he was interested in a Jamesian walk down memory lane, with its full quota of meditative hairsplitting. Yet he also meant to take advantage of his hybrid status as a Europeanized American. I made no scruple, James explains in his introduction, of my conviction that I should understand and should care better and more than the most earnest of visitors, and yet that I should vibrate with more curiosity ... than the pilgrim with the longest list of questions. Vibrate he did, in the ornate and extraordinary periods of his late phase, and the result was a one-of-a-kind travel book, The American Scene. What appalls him the most, though, is the Almighty Dollar, which he perceives as the preliminary American postulate, the very bedrock of New World life: This basis is that of active pecuniary gain and of active pecuniary gain only--that of ones making the conditions so triumphantly pay that the prices, the manners, the other inconveniences, take their place as a friction it is comparatively easy to salve, wounds directly treatable with the wash of gold. Some will argue that the fussbudget author had spent too much time in England, where money remained a dirty word until after the Second World War. Others may find his diagnosis eerily prescient. In any case, The American Scene remains required reading for anybody interested in U.S. history, Henry James, or the incredible evolution of the compound sentence.

This is a report in an English newspaper about city life in the United States. In many cities in the USA hundreds of people ride bikes to work every day. Some of these people have even formed a group called “Bike for a Better City”. They ask people to ride bikes instead of driving cars so that the city may have cleaner air.

For several years ,this group has tried hard to get the city council to make life easier for bike riders. For example, they want the city council streets. The council has not yet decided what to do . It wants to keep everyone happy. But,so far the only cycle paths that have been built are in parks. To this day the safest place to ride a bike may still be in the parks.

Visitors to the United States are often surprised to learn the great distance from the east coast to the west coast. The continental United States stretches 4,500 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the Pacific Ocean on the west. It borders Canada on the North, and reaches south to Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. A fast train, travelling 96 kilometers an hour, takes more than 48 hours to cross the country. A jet plane crosses the continental United States from east to west in about five hours.

Including the states of Alaska and Hawaii, which are not seen in this map of the continental United States, the country covers an area of 9,363,123 square kilometers. Of the fifty states of the country Alaska is the largest in area, and Hawaii is the newest. The former borders on northwestern Canada: the latter lies in the Pacific.

Caucus goers met at sites around the state to show support for their candidate and be counted in the first contest of the 2016 Presidential nominating cycle.

This year the Iowa caucuses drew many first-time caucus-goers.

John Clark is one of them. He says that he took the time to caucus in order to make his voice heard.

"I feel like its part of being American as you get the chance to do this, you get the chance to say what you believe in, and have a voice and vote."

Thanking his supporters, Ted Cruz relished in a major victory over Donald Trump, the national poll leader.

"Iowa has sent notice that the republican nominee in the next president of the United States will not be chosen by the media, will not be chosen by the Washington establishment, will not be chose by the lobbyists but will be chosen by the most incredible power for force where all sovereignty resides in our nation by we the people, the American people."

Trump is a controversial figure among Iowa voters.

"I think he can bring the rights to change the government back to the people."

"I can say I will not be supporting Trump. Our views just dont agree. I believe in equality and respect for all people and I dont think he does."

Despite a disappointing second place finish for the often bombastic real-estate mogul, Trump was gracious in conceding defeat.

"I am really honored. And I want to congratulate Ted and I want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates including Mike Huckabee."

Analysts say that Florida Senator Marco Rubio is likely to enjoy increased momentum going forward.

Rubio finished a solid third, just one percentage point behind Trump but well ahead of the rest of the GOP field.

Hillary Clinton endured a nail-biter of a night that finished in a virtual tie with Bernie Sanders.

Clinton says she will keep fighting on in her address to supporters.

"I want you to know I will keep doing what I have done my entire life. I will keep standing up for you. I will keep fighting for you. I will always work to achieve the America that I believe in where the promise of that dream that we hold out to our children and our grandchildren never fades but inspires generations to come. Join me, lets go win the nomination."

Although for many, tonight is just the beginning of a long slog to the two major parties national conventions in August, it also marks the end of the line for candidates who failed to gain traction.

Two contenders: Maryland Governor Martin OMalley and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, dropped out after poor showings today in Iowa.

The Americans are much in love with food. This is part of being American too. Baseball is Americans national pastime1, but whats a ball game without hot dogs, peanuts2 and Cracker Jacks (sweetened popcorn3)? Hollywood is Americas symbol of glamour4 and excitement all over the world, but who would watch a movie in America without asking for an extra large bag of popcorn? And the astronauts took instant orange drink [Tang] with them.

Americans love all kinds of food, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Greek, French, Japanese and many others. The Americans are in fact

“The UN of Food.”

To get familiar with the American eating custom, one must know two things. First, one must know the sequence5 of service. There is something special in terms of the sequence, or order, of dish service in America compared with ours. Here is the order:

1. Aperitif6—a small cup of alcoholic drink to increase ones appetite7. The host or hostess will ask: “Do you like a cup of aperitif?”

2. Hors doeuvre8—some tasty food offered in small quantities at the beginning of a meal.

3. Appetizer —or called starter, it is a small serving of juice, fruit or seafood or something else, at the beginning of a meal, to stimulate9 peoples appetite.

4. Now the main course is under way:

a) Soup—it is usually the first course in a dinner.

b) Fish—it is usually served after the soup and before the entree10 in a formal meal.

c) Entree—the third course of a meal, generally it is made up of a hot meat.

d) Savory11—the last course in a formal meal, it is something pleasant to eat but with a salty rather than sweet taste.

5. Dessert12 —sweet food served toward the end of a meal, usually it is a pudding, chocolate cake, or cheese and biscuits sometimes.

6. Coffee—thats the last stage in a formal present-day European and American dinner. Its served either at table or in the living room.

In a family treatment, the above-mentioned No 1-3 stage may be omitted13, though No 4 is the essential part. And the main course generally includes no more than 5 dishes of nutrient14 food. Ostentation15 is never under consideration.

Another thing to mention is that serving oneself from ones own plate is popular in Europe and America, except for the soup and bread which is taken and enjoyed according to ones need.

The second one we must know about the American eating custom is the taboos at table.

(1) Dont circle your plate with your arm. If you do so, you will become the focus16 of the table. Everyone would wonder: “Is there anything wrong with the food?” This may give a false message that you dont like the food or something like that.

(2) Dont push the plate back when finished. Leave it where it was. Do you mean to remind17 the hostess that youve just completed a labor?

(3)Dont lean18 back and announce that “Im through” or “Im stuffed19.” Just put the fork and knife quietly across the plate, thats all.

(4) Dont cut up everything before you start to eat. Cut only one or two bites20 at a time.

(5) Never take huge mouthfuls of anything. Do you mean to show how hungry you are? Dont do that! Be gentlemanlike or ladylike.

(6) Dont crook21 your finger when picking up a cup or glass. That looks too affected22, far from ladylike!

(7) Never wear too much lipstick23 to the table. It may stain the napkins24 and look gaudy25 and embarrassing on the rims26 of the cup or glass.

(8) Its never acceptable to reach across the table for anything (a serving dish, for example). If the item you want is not at hand, simply ask for the nearest person for help, like “Mrs. Smith, would you mind passing me the butter (or a dish)?”

The American tour is over, and a little bit of the American swim through time and space tunnel, drip in my heart, printed in my mind.

America is an independent country. As for education, in China, we are all the baby in the family, holding hands in our hands, a little hurt is not willing to let us, more reluctant to stay away from our parents arms. American parents are more relaxed about their children and let them succeed with their own efforts. I saw such a scene in the United States, a baby fell down, and the babys mother didnt have as much pain as her parents in China, but taught him how to get up. At the sorran school in Los Angeles, there are many big brothers and sisters who are doing volunteer work to get credits, and they create their own world with their own hands. Our Chinese students may be little princess princesses at home. But in the United States, our landlady has made us experience our own dishes and the joys of labor. Thats how two parents of different countries have different approaches to education kids. Perhaps, the pain is some, but only temporary, but the cowardice in the heart once formed, is permanent, cannot change. This is worth learning.

American thrift is more worth learning. In China, we may be a little wasteful, but in the United States, most of the meals are buffet. There are some Chinese students who have been watching for a while. Many students take a lot of food, but many of them are wasted, and americans eat as much as they can and never waste food. My MOM is a woman who knows her life well and doesnt live in a wealthy neighborhood, but her family has always been frugal. They have three cars, an armored car, a sports car and a car. Two of them are luxury cars, and one is a Mercedes Benz in the eighties. In China, people tend to drive luxury cars, and they usually drive old cars. They have a pool where they often hold parties, so that we have the privilege of meeting more foreigners.

On the first day to Los Angeles, Xu Mingjie very lucky and I attended a local wedding, it was a very romantic wedding, under the illuminate of lamplight, a couple looks very bright. Little girls and small, well-fitted dresses add another look to the wedding.

Christianity was the bishop of the United States, and in the soslan school, it was the propaganda of Christianity. In that, although we believe in Buddhism, we respect their Christian culture, which is the highlight of Chinese students abroad. Our family still goes to church on the weekend.

In the United States, we went to shopping malls, and the shop assistants were very enthusiastic about us, and we were in that crazy shopping, invisibility, which promoted the economic development of the United States. To think about, and why the salesman students enthusiasm for China, which is not Chinas continuous development, continuous increase in the national economy, despite this, we dont it is for the welfare of the United States?

After a week of study, we went on to the east, the White House, congress, the United Nations, Wall Street, Broadway... Let us experience another American amorous feelings.

I dont think americans are as gentlemanly as British people, but there are still places to learn, and Ive benefited a lot from this trip to America.

****年*月**号早上,三姨带我去广州白天鹅宾馆见她的美国朋友Mary。

来到宾馆,三姨用手机打电话给Mary,让他们来接我们。过了一会儿,一对夫妇抱着一个很小的孩子向我们走来。“Hello!Good morning!

The benefits of immigrating to the United States, whether you believe it or not, is an interesting phenomenon in the United States and naturalization, which is that the number of people applying for citizenship has soared in the era of immigration regulation. Last year was the most intense year for border security and illegal immigration in the United States, and the number of americans applying for citizenship last year was the highest since 1999. A similar situation occurred a decade ago. Dan, a spokesman for the U.S. citizenship and immigration services (USCIS). every time theres an immigration debate, theres always a surge in naturalization applications, says Dan Kane. Some experts believe that rising immigration, naturalization and other service costs in recent years may have pushed immigrants to apply for naturalization prior to the increase. In addition, foreigners will be keen to join us citizenship and, of course, the top ten benefits of naturalization.

Top 10 benefits of joining us citizenship:

1. The citizenship of the United States can be applied to many relatives as permanent residents in the United States according to the immigration law. There is no limit on the number of people and the time for waiting for the green card is much shorter. Along with a unique, that is, if you are a citizen of the United States, you can in your immediate family (including spouse, parents and unmarried minor child (children) in the United States during the visit (s) to apply for immigrants to him, and he (they) dont have to leave the country to do procedure, as long as with immigration give receipt can legally to stay in American waiting for the final approval of immigration, and not of little chance, its just a matter of waiting for the length of time.

2. Many countries have visa-free access to American citizens. It is more convenient for American citizens to enter customs than those who do not automatically enter the customs.

Most people dont want to commit a crime, but maybe in the wrong time, in the wrong place, we are victims of some kind of situation, but as American citizens, we will not be expelled from the country. There are many important people have been in my life, and one of them I will never forget. I met him last summer. He was short and tanned, and was about twelve years old. He was selling the balloons on the sideway when I met him, I was curious and asked him:” why do you do business at such young age?” he said:” I’m not doing business, I have been saving money. I want to donate it to the disaster area, the children there need help.” I was surprise, and ashamed. I bought many balloons from him and asked him to keep the change. I should learn from him to be a kind-hearted person.

Most people, when given an opportunity to aid someone in need, are eager to do whatever they can to be of service. Those of us who have chosen to make healing the world a vocation are grateful for any occasion to send light and love to people in our immediate spheres of influence and beyond. As we apply our passion and our principles to this altruistic endeavor, we often forget to send ourselves the same bountiful gifts of wellness, though we ourselves may be in dire need of it. We overlook ourselves, not because we forget, but because we fear that focusing on the self is an indicator of selfishness. It is moreover much more difficult to heal oneself than to heal others because the seeds of uncertainty are more easily banished when we act on anothers behalf. When we send healing light to ourselves, it is important that our intentions and our self-trust be stronger than ever to counteract doubt. As we bless ourselves in this way, we serve as both an active channel and a passive destination. This should not change the way we interact with the valuable energy we wish to receive, however. Though we may be tempted to consciously direct or influence the manner in which light impacts our lives because we know ourselves most intimately, we should not try to control its path. When we draw the white light of protection and purity to our bodies, taking it into ourselves with each inhalation, our belief in the fact that it will naturally move toward areas of dysfunction will ensure that it flows through every muscle and organ. And when we fill our spaces with this light, our environments are cleared of all the negative energy that can sap our strength and our spirit. Surrounded inside and out with healing light, we feel safe and protected, healthy, relaxed, and content just as those who regularly receive such loving gifts from us do. If you sincerely believe that there is a part of yourself that exists independently of upset and illness, the love and light you send yourself will help you connect with it. You will see the affirmative impact of this connection almost immediately when you include yourself in the recipients of your healing gifts, as lifes frustrations become more tolerable and your bliss becomes ever more palpable.

Going abroad for Studies

The other day I announced that I would go abroad for further studies right after my college education. My decision evoked the immediate objection of my family: Why? Why should I borrow a huge sum of money for overseas studies while I might receive the same education at home at relatively low cost? My answer is: in addition to knowledge, I can gain experience that those who stay at home will never have.

First, experience is the opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. While a person can study a foreign language at home, the effect can never be compared with constant use of the language in academic and everyday life. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken. Living in English-speaking countries such as America and Australia for several years, for example, my English will be as perfect as native speakers.

Second, living and studying abroad offers me a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, foreign students are likely to encounter their counterparts from different countries and areas and are exposed to different ideas and values. This helps me to have a meaningful understanding of different societies and inevitably sees my own country in a new light.

Third, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is helpful. A person going abroad for study often experiences much more difficulty——difficulty in adapting to a new culture and in dealing with all problems alone. Yet, the difficulty, coupled with the frustration brought on by culture shock, is a rewarding experience for ones future life and development of personality.

Although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. For the benefit is not merely knowledge gained, but the experience desirable in ones personal life.

The weather was so nice that the weather had been deliberately given a sunny day, and xi an jis composition.

After breakfast, we set out to see the Terra Cotta Warriors. Just look at the parking lot and know how many people have come today.

The terracotta warriors witnessed the process of the great qin dynasty from weak to strong and from prosperity to decay. When the qin dynasty collapsed, the terracotta warriors continued to stand in this world, the time did not change its face, the loess did not extinguish its British qi. Every clay figure is lifelike, as if there are life, the bright eyes of the eyes staring at you, as if telling you the legend of that era. It is no wonder that it is possible to unify the six countries with such a sophisticated division.

I stared at these "soldiers" and had to marvel at the magnificence of the great qin dynasty, the grandeur of a burial pit, the grandeur of the mausoleum and the palace of the qin dynasty. At this point, I noticed that the "soldier" hair decoration was different, and I knew that it was a hierarchical symbol of qin dynasty. I finally understand that the royal family life is so luxurious, it is no wonder that so many people can kowtow to the throne and sell themselves for glory. It is no wonder that the people are suffering from the insurrection of insurrection. "Overindulgence will only lead to ruin", and the great qin dynasty was destroyed by luxury because of its military power.

When I left, I looked back, and these "soldiers" still fascinated the world with their own style.

To pay respects to the remains of the ancestors

In the afternoon, we went to the xi an banpo museum. The scorching sun hit the ground hard, but couldnt stop our enthusiasm. Every channel was filled with heads, and I followed the team to see the remains of the ancestors.

In the museum, even if you listen carefully, it is not easy to find the objects that are being explained, because there are so many objects here, dazzling and dazzling, the composition of xi an ji xing.

I cant help but marvel at the amazing things that human beings created over six thousand years ago. Its "amazing" to describe them in one word. Its hard to imagine how they were struggling to learn how to grow vegetables and livestock, how to learn to make bows, javelins, fishing forks, and even learn to make spinning spins of spinning wheels. Squeezed into the crowd, through the glass, I looked at the six thousand years ago, the spinning wheel, it is like a big stone ma money, slightly damaged, there are many scratches in the center of a hole, several other surface is very smooth. It condenses the diligence and wisdom of the forebears, and the simple, rough exterior cannot conceal its inner solemnity and deep. Almost all the POTS are painted with colorful paintings, such as running deer, birds, fish, people, etc. Some of the pottery had symbols on it, and the narrator said that was the rudiment of Chinese writing. The ruins of the half-slope also unearthed a clay figurines portrait, which is rich and rustic, with a vivid expression and a strong sense of life.

After that, I saw the bones of the half-slope man. Some buried in clay POTS, some buried directly, after more than six thousand years, the best preserved, and only a bit of bone printing. There is only one thing that makes me very confused. Almost all of them are very small. Later, the explainer said that two-thirds of the people in the half-slope had died in their early years, and only a third had survived to adulthood. If so, its understandable. It is conceivable that people at that time faced how severe, harsh environment! Their lives are gone, but their endless wisdom and hard work will be passed on forever.

篇19:圣诞节活动英语作文:美国怎么过圣诞?

全文共 6174 字

"We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas"Have you heard that song? Yup! Its Christmas time! This Christmas, I stayed with my "host family"1. It was an amazing experience to see how a typical American family would celebrate the biggest western festival of the year.

Christmas, like our Spring Festival, has a meaning in itself. Christmas Day, which is on December 25, is the birthday of Jesus Christ--the son of God. Thats why it is called Christmas. On that day, Christians would get together with their families to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. But nowadays, the religious meaning of Christmas has become less emphasized. To many families, it is just a time of family reunion and the ever-exciting present-giving.

Our school had been on winter vacation since December 11. I stayed at my friend, Stephen Stapczynskis house--his family was my "host family". Although Christmas was still more than ten days ahead, the festive spirit had already been teeming everywhere. The Christmas tree had already been set up, and on every windowsill, there were Christmas lights. On the first day I arrived at their house, Stephen and I helped Mrs. Stapczynski put decorations on the Christmas tree. The tree looked so nice with all the lights on and the beautiful ornaments dangling from its branches.

As Christmas came closer, the whole neighborhood had made preparations too. Some people would hold parties at their houses, inviting all their neighbors to come. So every night, if you went out, you would see a long line of cars parked in front of some house--a partys on!

Whats more, the Christmas decorations that some people put on their windows and in gardens were just amazing. On one night, we went out in our car for a "tour of lights". There was one street that was so famous for its lights that it got its way into the local paper. We had a hard time finding the well-hidden street, but it turned out to be worth the effort. Lights shone brightly in front of nearly every house, on trees, bushes, doors, windowseverywhere, taking different shapes, making it seem almost like daytime. Huge inflatable figures in the front gardens were waving to us: there were Santa Clauses2, of course, chuckling merrily away; and there were also other Christmas figures, like Rudolph3--the red-nosed reindeer--with his red nose gleaming ever so brightly; even Bart Simpson--a character in the famous comedy The Simpsons--had joined the jolly party, wearing a Santas hat. The street set off a lot of "ooh"s and "aah"s inside the car.4 When we left, there was a line of cars in the street, all there to see the lights.

Christmas is the time for exchanging presents. Stephen and Niko had been thinking about their Christmas lists (a list of things they wish "Santa"to give them for Christmas) for a long time. I didnt want to ask for anything, but the Stapczynskis were so kind to "force"me make one list as well (Mr. Stapczynski told me if I didnt make one he would chop off my legs). So I wrote down a couple of things that I would like to have, and gave the list to them--sorry, my mistake--to Santa.

Finally, Christmas Eve came. There was a special Christmas service at the church at 6 p.m. It was certainly a very interesting experience for me. The priest started the service reading and sang out extractions from a holy book--The Divine Liturgy. For several times, we would stand up and pray.

Sometimes, the church choir would start singing. The atmosphere was very quiet and holy. Then there was a ceremony called "The Receiving Communion". People waited in line to "receive"a spoonful of food from the priest. It was a very special Christmas tradition. The food was made from bread and wine. The bread represents the body of Jesus, and the wine represents his blood. After this ceremony, the priest had a speech. He reminded us not to forget the true meaning of Christmas, and let Jesus really live inside us--that is, to love the people around us wholeheartedly. I think that no matter if you are a Christian or not, this principle should be part of our lives. After the priest finished his speech, the part that I enjoyed most came: Christmas carols5. Christmas carols are songs that people sing at Christmas, such as "Jingle Bells", "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", "Silent Night"and so on. Some were very merry, others sounded quite holy, but all of them were beautiful. I closed my eyes, and let all the peacefulness and happiness that were in the songs flow through me. What a feeling it was!

We went to sleep earlier that day for we had to get up early on Christmas Day to open our presents. Sure enough, when I was still half-way during a sweet dream, Stephen burst into my room and told me to get up and open presents. There were a huge pile of presents under the Christmas tree, and there was such a mysterious mist shrouding them that made me eager to see what they all were. So one by one, we went through all the presents. Mr. and Mrs. Stapczynski had bought me everything I had written on my Christmas list--and a lot more! I got music CDs, film DVDs, clothes, books I was very happy, and I didnt know how to express my appreciation for what they had done for me.

Stephen and Niko had gotten a lot of presents too, and they had already been trying out their new games!

In the afternoon, we went to Mrs. Stapczynskis brother, Uncle Stans house. They had prepared a marvelous meal for us. A lot of their friends and relatives also came. I saw Stephen and Nikos grandparents, Yiayia and Papou (words of grandma and grandpa in Greek--Mrs. Stapczynskis parents came from Greece, so they like the boys using Greek words to call them). They were very kind to me, and treated me just like one of their family members. We had a very luxurious meal, consisting of turkey, beef, pork, and all sorts of other food.

After the meal, when all the stomachs were full and everyone was feeling drowsy6 from all the food, we just sat around the table and chatted, just like what we Chinese people do at the Spring Festival. After all, Christmas, like the Spring Festival, is a time for us to get away from our busy lives, a time for family gathering, and a time to have some fun.

Halloween is an autumn holiday that Americans celebrate every year。 It means "holy evening," and it comes every October 31, the evening before All Saints Day。 However, it is not really a church holiday, it is a holiday for children mainly。

Every autumn, when the vegetables are ready to eat, children pick large orange pumpkins。 Then they cut faces in the pumpkins and put a burning candle inside。 It looks as if there were a person looking out of the pumpkin! These lights are called jack—o—lanterns, which means "Jack of the lantern"。

The children also put on strange masks and frightening costumes every Halloween。 Some children paint their faces to look like monsters。 Then they carry boxes or bags from house to house。 Every time they come to a new house, they say,"Trick or treat! Money or eat!" The grown—ups put treat—money or candy in their bags。

Not only children, but most grown—ups also love Halloween and Halloween parties because on this day, they can disguise themselves as personages or ghost as their imaginations will lead them。 This bring them the satisfaction of being young。
