1、抓住人物在相同事件的不同表现，在纵向对比中体现人物的个性。

示例：二十三回宝玉见贾政前后的一段细节描写：宝玉听说贾政叫他时，“好似打了个焦雷，登时扫去了兴头，脸上转了颜色，便拉着贾母扭的好似扭股儿糖，死活不敢去”。不得不去时，“宝玉只得去了，一步挪不了三寸，蹭到这边来”，“挨着门进去”。如此光景，不禁令人想起老鼠不得不见猫的情形。但出来时的宝玉，可就是另外一种情形了：“慢慢的出去，向金钏儿笑着伸伸舌头，带着两个嬷嬷，一溜烟出去了。”真是避之若火。进去时同出来时一相对比，就使得宝玉顽皮惧父的形象跃然纸上。

2、抓住人物在不同事件的相同表现，在纵向对比中体现人物的个性。

示例：《林教头风雪山神庙》写“偷听”的细节有两处：一为店小二妻子奉命在小酒店有心偷听，二为林冲在山神庙无意偷听，谈话者同是陆谦、富安、管营、差拨等人。但前者写得简略，惜墨如金；后者写得详细，泼墨如云。从“偷听”者角度讲，店小二妻虽在门外，但心里紧张，既要偷听，又要防止被人发现；而后者林冲，身在暗处，无须防备，尽管细听。因此，店小二妻子只能听得藏头通过对四大名著的阅读，掌握人物描写的方法，学会生动形象描写具有个性的的人物。
