1946年7月22日，联合国经社理事会在纽约举行了一次国际卫生大会，60多个国家的代表签署了《世界卫生组织宪章》，《世界卫生组织宪章》于1948年4月7日生效。为纪念组织宪章通过日，1948年6月，在日内瓦举行的联合国第一届世界卫生大会上正式成立世界卫生组织，并决定将每年的7月22日作为“世界卫生日”，倡议各国举行各种纪念活动。次年，第二届世界卫生大会考虑到每年7月份大部分国家的学校已放暑假，无法参加这一庆祝活动，便规定从1950年起将4月7日作为全球性的“世界卫生日”。

确定世界卫生日的宗旨是希望引起世界各国对卫生问题的重视，并动员世界各国人民普遍关心和改善当前的卫生状况，提高人类健康水平。世界卫生日期间，包括中国在内的世界世界卫生组织各会员国的人们都要举行各种纪念活动，来强调健康对于劳动创造和幸福生活的重要性，推广和普及有关健康知识，提高人民健康水平。

2010年的世界卫生日的主题是：城市化与健康，选择这一主题是因为我们意识到城市化对全球公共卫生和个人健康所造成的影响。

今年世界卫生日以“千个城市、千人故事”为主题的全球活动将在2010年4月7日-11日在世界各地进行。千个城市是指为开展卫生活动开放公共场所。内容可以是公园活动、市政厅会议、清洁宣传或对机动车辆关闭部分街道。千人故事是指收集一千个致力于城市卫生工作并有显著影响的人物故事。

其实无论什么主题，什么活动目的只有一个，就是能让全世界认识到，我们赖以生存的地球真的需要我们用心、用行动去治理、去保护。

2015年世界卫生日的主题是：病媒传播的疾病。

病媒是诸如蚊子、臭虫、虱子和淡水螺一类的小生物，它们可以携带疾病，从一个人传播到另一个人，从一个地方传播到另一个地方。无论我们在家中还是旅行途中，它们都可以威胁我们的健康。

病媒传播的疾病是由人群中的病原体和寄生虫引起的疾病，包括疟疾、登革热等多种疾病。这些疾病常见于热带和亚热带区域以及难以获得安全饮用水和环卫设施的地方。
