在这个唯一的地球上，空间是有限度的，资源也是有限度的。人类的衣食住行各种需要都要从我们的地球母亲身上索取;经济发展所需要的资源，也要不断从她身上获得。

一个人一生需要消耗掉多少资源?有人算过一笔账，在美国这样的一个发达国家，一位八十岁的普通美国人一生要消耗约两亿升水、两千万升汽油、一千吨钢材和一千棵树的木材。在发展中国家一个人一生消费的就更多了。由此我们可以得出结论：“如果所有的人都这样生活，恐怕二十个地球都不够用;如果把美国的生活方式输入到全球各国，那将是一种全球性自杀。”
