Although it is generally agreed that the Christmas tree in its current form came from Germany in the early 19th century, the tradition of decorating a tree to mark winter celebrations dates back hundreds of years to Roman times, when they used to decorate evergreen trees with small pieces of metal to celebrate Saturnalia.

In medieval times the Paradise Play was performed every year on 24 December. This depicted the creation of Man and the fall of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and always included an evergreen hung with apples which represented the apple tree of temptation.

There is a legend that St Boniface, an English monk, came upon a group of pagans gathered around an oak tree who were preparing to sacrifice a child to the God Thor. In order to stop the sacrifice, and save the childs life, St Boniface is said to have felled the tree with one blow of his fist. Later on, a fir tree grew in place of the oak and this, St Boniface told the pagans, was the Tree of Life and represented the Christ Child.

Legend also suggests that, in the late 16th century, Martin Luther (the founder of the Protestant religion) was the first to decorate an indoor tree with candles when he attempted to recreate the stars shining over a forest of evergreens.

The first mention of decorated trees being taken indoors came in 1605 in Germany - a country with a long Christmas tree history! The trees were initially decorated with fruit and sweets together with hand made objects such as quilled snowflakes and stars. German Christmas Markets began to sell shaped gingerbreads and wax ornaments which people bought as souvenirs of the fair and took home to hang on their tree.

Tinsel was also invented in Germany in about 1610. Up until fairly recently real silver was used, which was pulled into wafer thin strips by special machines. This was durable but tarnished quickly and many experiments took place to try and find an alternative - including a mix of lead and tin, which was too heavy and kept breaking. It was only in the mid 20th century that a viable alternative was found.

Artificial trees were invented in the 1880s in a bid to try and stop some of the damage being caused to real trees due to people lopping the tip off large trees, thus preventing the trees from growing any further. It got so bad in Germany that laws had to be brought in to prevent people having more than one tree.

Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is credited with being responsible for introducing the custom of the Christmas tree to the British public by decorating the first English Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1841 using candles, sweets, fruit and gingerbread.

The popularity of the Christmas tree grew in Britain during the first half of the 20th century, with trees becoming bigger and more elaborately decorated with bells, baubles and tinsel. However, the onset of the Second World War resulted in a ban on cutting down trees for decoration and people resorted to having small, artificial tabletop trees bearing home made decorations. These were often taken down into the air raid shelters when the sirens sounded to provide a bit of Christmas cheer!

This all changed following the war, and large trees were erected in many public places to celebrate Christmas. The most famous of these is the tree in Trafalgar Square, London which is an annual gift from the Norwegian government to give thanks for the help they received from Britain during the war.

Christmas is the most important festival in the western world. It falls on December 25th. When my mother and I stayed in America, we were invited by one of my mothers friends to have Christmas with an American family. We bought some presents for our American friends on our way to their house.

They had prepared different kinds of gifts for their family and guests when we got to their house, such as Christmas candles, cakes, cards, little toys, biscuits and so on. A Christmas tree was placed in the comer of the brilliant hall. How beautiful it was! We were impressed by these. We had a big meal. 刚开始，我想：到底送什么礼物好呢?过了一会儿，我有了一个好主意：“做两张手工贺卡吧!”我在第一张贺卡上写上：i love you, mother !在第二张贺卡上写上：i love you, father !并在这两张贺卡上画上花边、雪人、圣诞树。写好画好之后，我突然听见了“咚咚”的脚步声，我惊慌失措、手忙脚乱，赶紧把两张贺卡压在屁股下面，因为这是“秘密行动”，决不能让爸爸妈妈知道，这样才有惊喜啊!一看，原来是妈妈要来打水洗脚，等妈妈洗完脚，我就大胆地拿出贺卡。一张放在爸爸明天要穿的皮鞋里，另一张放在妈妈明天要穿的高跟鞋里，等着给他们一个大惊喜! 爸爸妈妈看到了这份“特别”的礼物之后，都非常开心，连声说道：“龙龙长大了，知道给我们送礼物了!”这可是我第一次diy贺卡，虽然不算漂亮但是却包含着我暖暖的心意呢!妈妈激动地说：“这可是儿子第一次送礼物给我，我可要好好珍藏哦!”接着从包里变魔术般的拿出了一只大大的圣诞袜交给了我，我打开袜口一看，哇!装着满满一袋，全是我最爱吃的东西，太好啦!我兴奋地在妈妈脸上亲了好几下，爸爸也爽朗地笑了起来。

今年的圣诞是最有意义的一次圣诞。

Most westerners always celebrate Christmas Day as their major festival, in

order to memorialize Jesus. During that time, they always have several days off,

so they can enjoy this festival with all their hearts. The children often get

together with their friends. The adults are busy with decorating their houses.

to bed, the children often hang up their stockings beside their bed, so that

Father Christmas will fill them with presents. It is said that Father Christmas

always drives a deer to the human world and entering into each house from the

chimney. Now the children no longer believe in Father Christmas, but they still

hang up their stockings, because their parents will fill them with presents.

Chrismas Father was the descendant of a deity called Odin. It‘s also said that Chrismas Father comes from San Nichola, so he is also called St.Nicholas. He was the bishop of Asia

Minor city of Rafah and he was called a man of God after his death. He is an old man in red clothes and he wears a red hat.He has white mustache. He comes from the north on a blowmobile every Chrismas Day. He went into people‘s houses by the track and he put the presents into children‘s socks. So in western countries,parents put the gifts to their kids in kids‘ socks and put them on the head of the bed on Chrismas Eve. On the second day, the first thing after kids wake up is to find the presents from Chrismas Fathers.

It is said that there was a goodness man went broke his domain. He lived a hardlife and he has three daughters. The three daughters were being married but he didn‘t have money to buy dower for his daughters. On the happy Chrismas Eve three girls went to bed early. They didn‘t know that their father was so worried. At last the Chrismas father decided to help them . He besprinkled gold through the stack and the gold fell into the socks of the man‘s daughters. They lived a happy life from then on… Chrismas socks was origined by this.

Today is a festival worth celebrating. Christmas is certainly not without Santa Claus and Christmas presents. I think Christmas is a day for children. Today, children will "binge". They will travel and play.

I like the Christmas hat. Its red. There are gifts every Christmas. Of course, there is invisibility, which is happiness. If you are happy today, you will be blessed.

Today, I want to receive a Christmas present, of course, a baby bear and a Santa Claus. I like it very much. This wish, I realized. Mom bought it for me. She saw through my heart.

I also want to give every child in the welfare home a Santa Claus, but this can only happen when I grow up.

This afternoon, we went to the Chinese supermarket. There was Santa at the door handing out candy, of course. Walking into the supermarket, there was a tall Christmas tree with bells and flashing lights. It also has CARDS, of course, a blessing for people.
