As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.

65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.

In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth.

He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

今天放学回家，我看见妈妈手里拿着一张纸，嘴里不知道嘟囔着什么。走过去一看，原来是这个月的电费清单。妈妈说：“这个月的峰谷电没有合理使用。”“什么是峰谷电啊？”我好奇得问。“为了节约用电，我们家里装了峰谷电表。”妈妈告诉我，“峰电就是早上8点到晚上10点用的电，谷电就是晚上10点之后到早上8点之前用的电。”听了妈妈的话，我恍然大悟。

“那谷电和峰电还有什么区别呢？”我又问。妈妈回答我：“峰电的价格是0·568元/度，谷电的价格是0、288元/度。”“那我们只要多用谷电，少用峰电，既能为国家省电，又能为家里省钱！”我激动地说。

于是我便让妈妈拿出去年的电费清单，看看我们一共省了多少钱。1月份的发票起度是10586度，12月份的止度是16302度，那么一年用了16302—10586=5716（度）。按照不用峰谷电计算应付5716×0、586=3246、69（元）。现在装峰谷电后我统计了1至12月所用峰电一共是2982×0、568=1693、77（元），谷电一共是2764×0、228=796、03（元）。

突然，我发现在12月的清单上有一个“阶梯1”和“阶梯2”。妈妈说：“阶梯1就是电力部门规定的一年用电量超过了2760度就要加收0、05元/度，阶梯2就是一年用电量超过4800度就要加收0、3元/度。”原来是这样啊。我又算了一下，阶梯1总共付了59、45元，阶梯2总共付了274、8元。之后我把这两笔钱加上去年的峰谷电费，一共是1693、77+796、03+59、45+274、8=2824、05（元），再和不装峰谷电表对比，才发现省了3246、69—2824、05=422、64（元）。

节约用电，人人有责。我们要合理使用峰谷电，尽量少用峰电。这样不仅节省了国家的资源，而且能给家庭节约开资，真是一举两得。

When reading the passage, I am deeply moved by the mayor. Rich as he is, he has the virtue of saving. He spends money only on what he needs and never wastes money on what is of no use. I think this is really admirable.

The mayor reminds me of the great political leader of China, Chairman Mao. As the chairman of China, Mao led a very thrifty life. He used to wear old clothes at home. 大家都应该知道，水、电、粮、是我们赖以生存所需的资源，但是我们就有些人不爱惜资源，不把节约当回事。所以我呼吁大家：节约资水源，请节约每滴水，爱惜每一粒粮食，节约每一度电，从我做起，从点滴做起，从身边做起。

在生活中，我们就有许许多多的例子，比如：我们的品德老师曾经跟我们说过每一粒米都来之不易，它凝结了农民伯伯所有的心血，小小的一粒米，可是要经过好多个个程序才变成我们碗里白花花的米饭。每当她经过我们教室时看见我们把碗里的粥给倒掉的时候，他看着被倒掉的粥，十分的惋惜和心痛，我以我倡议大家：节约粮食，不剩饭菜，培养节约的好习惯。

水，也是我们不可缺少的一部分，据调查，我们国家的水之源十分丰富，但是能饮用的水确实很少。有一次，我去洗手时看见一位小弟弟洗完手后竟然没有关紧水龙头，我一看见立马追上去对他说：“小弟弟，你洗完手怎么不关水龙头呀?现在还在漏水呢!请不要浪费水哦!”没想到小弟弟听后非但没有回去关水龙头，反而却一副若无其事的样子对我说：“这有什么，地球上不是有许多河流吗?这点怕什么?浪费一点没有关系的。”我一听便愤怒地说：“怎么能说是用不完的呢?地球上的海洋虽然很多，但是我们能饮用的水却很少呀!”他听了我的解释脸一下子红了，然后对我说：“大哥哥，对不起我错了，我以后再也不浪费水了。”看到了这，我提议大家一定要珍惜没滴水，别让它白白流失。

还有电资源的浪费，在生活中一定也很常见吧!记得有一则这样的公益广告：有一家主人在睡觉时自觉的关掉家里的所有电源，还说出了各种电器的待机率各是多少，比如：空调的待机率是8瓦，微波炉的待机功率是11瓦......看到这些数字，我不由得觉得很浪费电资源，最后还告诉我们如果我们每个人都及时关闭待机电器的电源，节省的电能可以供应东北三省所有的家庭用电。看到这我不禁想起我小的时候我一个人在家里十分害怕，片吧家里的等全部都开完了给自己壮胆，等大人回家了才把灯给关掉，为此我不禁为我自己浪费电的习惯感到深深到懊悔。

我们一定要养成勤俭节约的好习惯，做到珍惜水资源，节约每滴水，爱惜每粒粮食，节约每一度电!
