扬子鳄是我国特有的珍稀动物，已濒临灭绝。我国已经把它列为国家一级保护动物之一。扬子鳄又称中华鳄，因为扬子鳄是恐龙的“堂兄弟”，所以它的俗名又叫猪婆龙或土龙。 扬子鳄生活在淡水中，主要分布在长江中下游的安徽、浙江、江西等地区，其中安徽南部青弋江沿岸的太湖流域的沼泽地带的数量最多。

两亿多年前的中生代，地球是扬子鳄和恐龙的天下。后来，因为自然环境的变化，恐龙等爬行动物因不能适应环境的需要而灭绝，而扬子鳄却一直延续到今天。在扬子鳄身上，至今还可以找到恐龙等爬行动物的许多特征，所以人们称它为“活化石”。现在，人们常常以扬子鳄等爬行动物去推断恐龙的生活习性。扬子鳄对生物进化的研究具有重要意义。 扬子鳄体长约2米，像一条大蜥蜴。嘴长，里面长着锋利的牙齿。背部暗褐色，有的呈深绿色，还有些黄色斑点，腹部灰色，皮肤上覆盖着大鳞片，共有六个横列，每个大鳞片呈六边形。四肢短而粗壮，尾巴特别长，比头和身体的总和还要长一些。

扬子鳄以蛤蟆、鱼、蛙以及鼠类为主食。兔子会跑，鱼儿会游、鸟儿会飞，而扬子鳄的脖子只能转动15°，所以它捕食时，若不耍一点“阴谋诡计”是不可能捕到猎物的。它捕食猎物时，把尾巴和头隐藏在水中，只露出像木块似的背部，当猎物停落在它那像木块的背上晒太阳时，它的身体就会慢慢下沉，最后，只露出紧闭的嘴巴，猎物就会朝没水的地方爬，一直爬到扬子鳄的嘴边。这时，猎物还不知道，它已危在旦夕，只见扬子鳄张开大嘴，猎物“咕噜”地滚入嘴里，霎时便成了它的美餐。

扬子鳄在水中捕捉食物非常成功，但是它打兔子更精彩。只要它发现岸边有兔子的踪迹，就会头顶一簇水草，耐心地在水里等待，甚至几天几夜也一动不动。兔子来时，只见扬子鳄慢慢逼近它，然后，扬起大尾巴，把兔子打入水中，叼在嘴里，压入水中，将兔子闷死，再慢慢享用。

扬子鳄一般生活在沼泽地的洞穴中，芦苇丛中或竹林里。它每年的十月冬眠，第二年5月出来活动，到了七八月，开始产卵，产的卵约有鸭蛋那样大，一次产卵26枚左右，通常孵化出的幼鳄是雌多雄少，雄性大约只有五分之一。

现在，我国野生扬子鳄已不足500只。扬子鳄性情温和，一般不伤害人类，人们为何要不择手段地捕杀它呢?让我们团结一心，共同去保护已濒临灭绝的扬子鳄吧!
