淮南，一座横跨淮河两岸的城市，拥有淮河以北的凤台县、潘集区和淮河以南的田家庵区、谢家集区、八公山区、大通区、毛集区，2596。4平方公里美丽富饶的土地。淮河，几千年来，不仅养育了淮南河两岸的人民，而且也托起了坐落在它岸边的古老城池，让这些城池在历史的长河里时隐时现。今天，这条河也将淮南与其他城市缠绕在一起，上游紧系着文化名城寿县，下游串连着淮上明珠蚌埠；东与凤阳、定远毗邻，南与长丰接壤。

我们生活的这片土地之所以被称为“淮南”，是有历史渊源的：汉代开始在这里设置了淮南国，从汉代到两晋再到宋朝，这片土地先后经历了淮南郡、淮南道、淮南路等以“淮南”命名的建置。清末民初，这片土地上发现并开始采掘煤矿。1930年，国民政府在九龙岗设淮南煤矿局，发展成为淮南矿区，标志着现代“淮南”的开始。1949年1月18日淮南解放。3月，中共中央华东局决定在淮南三镇的基础上设立淮南煤矿特别行政区；4月，淮南煤矿特别行政区改设为淮南矿区。1950年9月，建县级淮南市。1952年6月，建立省辖淮南市。1977年1月，凤台县由阜阳专区划入；1999年11月，毛集社会发展综合实验区批准成立。2004年7月，原属合肥长丰的孔店乡、三和乡、曹庵镇、史院乡、孤堆乡、杨公镇、孙庙乡由长丰县分别划入淮南市大通区、田家庵区、谢家集区。

由于独特地理位置，自古以来淮南的交通就很便利。一条淮河波浪翻，舟楫往来航运忙。淮河虽然是淮南几千年主要的交通航道，但这里还拥有过世界历史上最早有明确、系统、完整文字记载的陆路交通线——鄂君启节大道，它比著名的公元前321年修建的古罗马亚平大道还早11年。

1957年4月，在寿县东津乡出土的鄂君启节，是战国时楚怀王发给他的至亲在这条路上的通告符节(通行证件)，持此符节，不仅可以免税，还可享受沿途的接待。“鄂”是楚国的代称，楚在迁都寿春之前在湖北。鄂君启节大道从今天的凤台河东经寿唐关、郝家圩孜然后进入淮南，经李郢孜，园艺场入长丰到合肥。

如今，淮南的陆路交通线四通八达；铁路建设始于世纪30年代淮南煤矿开采期间，1936年淮南铁路（田家庵—裕溪口）的建成通车，成为沟通淮河与长江之间陆路运输的最例捷形式。50年代，淮南的铁路建设发展很快，建成了贯通全市东西的大（通）八（公山）线，全线设立了10座火车站（如今已发展为16座火车站）。70年代，随着阜（阳）淮（南）铁路的兴建，一座气势雄伟的公路铁路两用桥横跨淮河，成为千里淮河第一桥。

公路也是淮南与外界联系的重要通道，其中206国道是皖西地区去蚌埠、南京等地必经之路，也是淮南东部城市的主干道。纵横交织的公路网，把淮南和祖国的每一个城市都联系起来。
