他小时候的一段经历在这里不得不说， 这段经历对他创作 《雾都孤儿》 有着重大的影响， 很达程度上这部作品就是以这段经历为蓝本进行创作的，带有很强的自传性质。

他，在十二岁生日那天，被送到一家皮鞋厂当童工。活是先用油纸，再用蓝色的纸把鞋 油灌封上，然后贴上标签。他干得又快又好，但是却给他带来了新的耻辱。老板为了赚钱， 吸引顾客，就把他安置在橱窗里，让过往的行人“欣赏”他熟练地动作与节奏。当地的一些 年龄相仿的男孩女孩，就经常一边吃着果酱蛋糕，一边把鼻子挤在玻璃窗上，饶有兴致的观 看他的动作与表情。这给幼小的他带来了很大的伤害，严重的挫伤了他的自尊心。从而产生 了对不幸的儿童深厚的同情和坚决摆脱贫困的决心。

作品讲的是一个出生在济贫院里的孤儿，因为不能忍受非人的待遇，逃到伦敦，很不幸 的落入盗窃团伙的手中， 后来得到邦布尔和罗斯小姐的救助从此过上了幸福的生活。

奥利弗 痛苦的童年生活就是作者经历的翻版;最终幸福生活，大完满的结局是作者对未来的希望， 从另一个角度来讲就是对当时的资产阶级抱有幻想， 所以作品中呈现出的讽刺和幽默带有不 彻底性(时代的局限性可以显现) 。

这部作品， 是罪恶与善良的激烈斗争， 他努力地说明一条他一直信奉的信条——善良可 以战胜邪恶。狄更斯善恶分明，嫉恶如仇，塑造的人物的性格鲜明凸显，恶的代表是贪婪的 邦布尔、邪恶的费金、残暴的赛克斯、狡诈阴险的蒙克斯??，善的代表是聪明机智的布朗 落、慈祥的梅丽夫人、善良的罗斯小姐??。这与中国的小说存在很大的差异，中国向来强 调“中庸” ，这在小说的创作上就体现为灰色人物，也就是形象丰满的性格——优缺点的集 合体。这里的灰色地带的人物很少，我觉得一个良心未泯，出淤泥而不染的苦命姑娘——南 希，可以算是一个。

她有着极为丰富的心理和复杂的性格。她是一个不幸的姑娘，从小就被训练为偷盗者， 而且还是第二号贼首赛克斯的情妇，她的生命里除了绞刑架，她看不到别的任何的希望。可 是当她看见善良天真的奥利弗，仿佛是看到了昔日清白的自己，对他的同情油然而生。应把 奥利弗绑回贼窝时她内心充满了矛盾，看!她在挣扎! “即便是混迹在伦敦最下流的藏污纳 垢之所，但在她心里仍有女性的某种心理。

”良心和天性的未泯让我们一览无余。她冒着生 命的危险向罗斯小姐通风报信， 终于终于把奥利弗救了出来。

罗斯和邦布尔极力的劝说南希 离开那个邪恶的地方时，但是她却不想撇下赛克斯，看着他送死，挣扎着忠于自己爱的人， 可是当赛克斯知道南希的所作所为时，用的却是盗贼的道德准则，视她为叛徒，无情的将南 希杀害。其实，狄更斯为南希和赛克斯起名字是很有讲究的，就像《红楼梦》 里的人名一样， 是有来头的。

“南希”和“赛克斯”在英文中分别是以 N 和 S 开头的，就象征着磁铁的两级， 对立统一，相互依赖又相互分离。她“背叛他” ，却舍不得离开他;他杀害她，却因她失魂 落魄，最终在房顶跌落,脖子被自己的一条绳子的活扣套住而气绝身死。

因此，关键人物——南希，呈现出边缘化的人物感，丰富又深刻，这种立体的人物形象 给人留下的更为丰富想象空间和思考余地。所以我更喜欢南希这个角色。

当然，作品的主角——奥利弗，这个出生在环境恶劣的济贫院，之后有不断地在贼窝中 挣扎， 在罪恶和善良之间徘徊， 在信任和怀疑中游曳的可怜孩子， 是最值得尊敬的。

奥利弗， 仅仅一个孩子，在如此的环境下，可以一直保持着一颗纯真的善良的心，不怀疑人生，不悲 观，也不怨天尤人，如此的坚强和勇敢，是我们一生的榜样。

所以， 任何时候都不要怀疑人性的善良， 不要对任何的屈辱和困境低下自己高贵的头颅， 只要还活着，一切就都有可能。

这里，所有人归宿一切体现着“善有善报，恶有恶报” ，或者说“因果轮回”的准则。

善良的人们过上了幸福的生活，反面的人物或者被绳之以法，或者客死他乡，或者流浪。这 是作者一直的期盼或者说是信条，这表现了他的人道主义观点。

我承认大家认为狄更斯在世界文学里的影响和地位， 可是自己读完这部作品时， 感觉没 有想象中的那么好，那样的震撼人心。我看来，作品的前半部分比后半部分更具震撼力。结 局太完满了，太团圆了，虽然大团圆的结局向来是人类的一直以来的共同向往，但是我觉得 这种结局真的是削弱了这部作品的给人带来的震撼力， 我没有在作品里看到资本主义的深刻 本质， 他呐喊的声音因此小了很多， 这是其一。

其二是作品里的人物形象好听点是个性鲜明， 不好听点就是单薄，很多的形象给人的感觉始终是平面式的，怎么也饱满不起来，借用村上 春树的一句话：没有立体感，犹如一把泥巴甩在平板板的水泥壁上。比如，坏人并没有怎么 坏，本来自己的看家本领——偷盗，都不很专业。既然是偷盗，怎么还是整天住在那种小破 屋里，为钱烦恼?费金应该是做这行好多年了，因为南希小时候就已经为他服务了，长大到 都已经是赛克斯的情人了，怎么还是那副德行?这不太符和常理，这行是很发财的，这么些 年照理应该是大的团伙了吧!好人很多，而且这帮所谓的盗贼并没有怎么很厉害，善良的人 那么容易就把他们搞定了，实在是匪夷所思(如果现实里也这样就好了) 。其三，作品的后 半部分，也就是从南希通风报信后开始，作品呈现给人的感觉是急促而下的。坏人落网太顺 利了，一切就像是顺流而下，就像是一个人先是艰难的爬着山，后来就小跑着下山的感觉。

---Book Review: “Camille”

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800s, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armands father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armands reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumass last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

Her whole character was honest and faithful. Angel figured out at last that a person should be judged not only on what he has done but also on what he wanted to do!

Despite I’ve not in my childhood yet, I still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. The tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. This summer I’ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. It’s the world-famous fairy-tale by the French author, Antoine de St-Exupery, The Little Prince.

As many other fairy-tales, the outline of The Little Prince is not very complex. “I”, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the Sahara. In this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the Asteroid B612. The little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. In that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.

On his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd. Following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the Sahara, on the earth.

A piggy named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte became friend. The future of this poor piggy is a delicious course of the Christmas feast.
