In this film, as we can see, the Shawshank Prison, which enjails lots of people. They have been in the prison form many years ,so they won’t go abroad. Because they won’t and also they can’t. They lived here for years without hope, and they lived just in the small prison, where nobody knows what is their dream and what’s their hope. As I remember, a old man Brooks was released after he had been in the jail for 50 years. But he found that the world became completely different from the world he imagined. 方鸿渐的命运是幸运的，因为他早早的受到外国教育，接受西方教育，在那样一个动荡的年代，他是走在时代前列者之一。方鸿渐的命运又是悲哀的，虽然他出洋留学，但没有学到真本事，只知道狂妄自大，自吹自擂，这是他命运如此令人惋惜的最重要因素，也是对世人的一种警告。

同时方家的一些封建礼节，折射出当时社会还存在很多封建落后的现象。当方鸿渐回到家中不久，方父母便提出反对结婚自由，要早早的为儿子找一个媳妇。可见那种包办婚姻的思想依然存在，真是令人恐惧，而且方鸿渐的两兄弟的两个儿子，一个叫阿丑，一个叫阿凶，说是为了避邪而取这种难听的名字，真是令人无语!
