Even the position in which Santiago collapses on his bed—face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up—brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life.

Due to Santiago’s recent bad luck, Manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.

As Santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitable struggle that will lead to its death. Santiago lives according to his own observation: “man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In Hemingway’s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. Accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old man’s trophy catch.

The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.

Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. 小说以陕北黄土高原上孙、金、田三家人的命运为中心，反映了“文革”到改革开放的社会面貌，从郝红梅为了摆脱地主身份和顾养民恋爱可看出当时地主受人轻视，只有有钱有权便可呼风唤雨，而从少安与润叶真心相爱却无奈地被田福堂拆散。少安被迫背离乡可看出当时的人对身世、成份和权力是多么的重视。

而闹旱灾时田福军冒着犯法的危险救济百姓让人在这黑暗的社会里看到了一丝光芒，显得格外地与众不同。

读了《平凡的世界》我最大的收获便是得知了平凡中的伟大，作者路遥用自己深厚的写作功底将孙少平，孙少安及一系列人物的关系以及那农村淳朴的特点表现得淋漓尽致，让人拍案叫绝。《平凡的世界》没有戏剧化的情节，传奇性的故事却一次又一次地给我们演变了一个真理，平凡的就是伟大的，文章人物刻画也十分地独特，从细节处表现了了一个个鲜活地人物个性。

纵观全书，字里行间流淌的全是浓浓的爱意。所有人世间的真情都在这里一一的展现，这也成为了全书最大的看点。

路遥在后记中写道“希望将自己的心灵与人世间无数的心灵沟通。”我想他做到了。

当我一觉醒来，本以为今天可以呼吸一下清晨充满阳光的空气，妈妈却要求我默写英语课上所学的单词。这个消息好似一把扫帚，将我之前的快乐情绪像垃圾一般扫出了我的心房。

我闷不乐地打开英语书，那些单词仿佛长得没有尽头，而且还在嘲笑我。你瞧，“eye”像一个嬉皮笑脸的讨厌鬼，“visit”像一个挤眉弄眼的调皮蛋，“let”则像一个正朝我傻笑的小孩儿。

这时，外面开始下雨了，那雨滴足有鸡蛋那么大，当它们登陆在我房间的玻璃上时，就好似一个巨人正在敲鼓，“咚咚咚”地一直在响，震耳欲聋，让人心烦意乱！

终于，到我默写完厚厚的英语书中的最后一个单词时，仿佛一个刚好完马拉松比赛的运动员，累得气喘吁吁、无精打采。不过，一想到可以出去玩了，我身上所有的疲劳和怨气顿时被抛在了九霄云外！这时候，窗外雨的声音也不再像是令人烦躁的敲鼓声了，瞬间变成了钟表的“滴答滴答”声，很小，很美，很动听。
