鱼，是我想要的;熊掌，也是我想要的。如果两个东西不能同时得到，那么就舍弃鱼选取熊掌。生命，是我想要的，正义，也是我想要的。如果两个东西不能同时得到，那就牺牲生命选取道义。生命也是我想要的，但是我想得到的有胜过生命的，所以我不能做苟且偷生的事;死亡是我厌恶的，但是我厌恶的有胜过死亡的，所以有的灾祸我不躲避。假使人们所想要的没有胜过生命的，那么凡是用来求的生存的手段哪一种不可用?假使人们所厌恶的没有超过死亡的，那么凡是可以躲避祸患的手段那种不用呢?按照这种方法就可以生存却不采用的，按照这种方法就可以躲避祸患却不做。由此可见所想要的有胜过生命的，由此可见所厌恶的有胜过死亡的。不仅只有贤能的人有这样的本性，人人都有，只不过是贤能的人不丧失罢了。
