Guy de Maupassant（18501893）， one of the greatest critical realist writers in the world, is considered as one of three kings of world short story。 Maupassant created six novels and 359 medium forms during his brief lifetime, engendering a momentous effect on the later literature. And it’s his maiden work, Suet Ball that won him world-wide prestige.

In1870, with the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, the real-based story Suet Ball happened. The heroine of the story is a humble harlot called Suet Ball. With a group of French residents of Rouen, recently occupied by the Prussian army, the 11 travelers are on their way fleeing to Le Havre in a stagecoach. In virtue of the appalling weather, the stagecoach moves rather slowly and has just covered a few miles by midday. Initially, those occupants snub Suet Ball whereas their attitudes alters with the emergence of a basket filled with scrumptious food and she caters for those hungry travelers selflessly.

The carriage doesn’t stop until they blunders into a Prussian-held territory called T?tes. A Prussian officer detains the coach with no definite reasons. In the next two days, the occupants wait with barely concealed impatience and eventually Suet Ball tells that they will be detained perpetually unless she approves of sleeping with the officer. Out of her patriotism, Suet Ball gives him a point-blank refusal. As it should be, those travelers behave furiously to the officer"s arrogance while during the next two days, they exemplify logic and morality in diverse ways to convince Suet Ball of its validity. What a kind-hearted girl! Finally Suet Ball gives up and sacrifices her body for everyone’s freedom.

The next morning, they are permitted to leave. But those "representatives of Virtue" totally neglect Suet Ball, casting scathing sights on the poor young woman while even disdaining talking to her and rejecting sharing their food with her in the same way that she did at the beginning. From their perspectives, Suet Ball turns out to be no more utilizable and should be condemned for her ashamed conduct. As the stagecoach travels deeper into the night, she seethes with rage against those hypocrites, and ultimately weeps for her lost dignity.

In this story, Maupassant highlighted the intense comparison between Suet Ball and the so-called nobles. Rapacity, hypocrisy, sexuality and nobility intertwine in the spotlight，eulogizing the underclass’ patriotism and lampooning the sham of the aristocracy. Maupassant portrays the inhabitants of the stagecoach in varied disparaging ways. The most luminous character belongs to the two nuns. At first they are portrayed as tranquil and subservient to Lord and demonstrate their fiery patriotic desire to dedicate to their motherland rather than a sordid intention like the other passengers: the nuns profess to haste to a military hospital to heal the wounded French soldiers, hence presenting the argument towards instigating Suet Ball to abandon her resistance. How absurd it is! Nuns are supposed to take strait vows and treat others benevolently. They fill Suet Ball"s head with arguments, arguing that it is not morally wrong to sleep with the officer in order to let the travelers leave, and that the longer she waits, the more young French soldiers will die as the nuns are not there to look after them. Superficially, they claim that it is for the good of the country but indeed they’re just taking advantage of her. Suet Ball"s resistance to the officer"s sexual advances again indicate her patriotism. Cruel wars have stripped all the external stuffs. In contrast to all of these is Suet Ball, a prostitute, revealed to be the most fiercely patriotic, virtuous, and morally admirable character, which Maupassant contrasts with the hypocrisy and snobbery of the others.

It is arguably Maupassant’s most famous short story. The carriage constitutes a microcosm of French society as a whole. And the narrative techniques of this story are rather sophisticated and carefully conceived. On balance, a real noble person like Suet Ball can’t be judged by the appearance or the occupation, his/ her moral quality will glitter when confronting the real ordeal. Consequently, I deem that Suet Ball is worth reading lingeringly, savoring every word.

despite i’ve not in my childhood yet, i still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. the tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. this summer i’ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. it’s the world-famous fairy-tale by the french author, antoine de st-exupery, the little prince.

as many other fairy-tales, the outline of the little prince is not very complex. “i”, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the sahara. in this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the asteroid b612. the little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. in that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.

Usually, we have contact with many world-famous novels, telling the essence of life. The stories of characters’ life move us give us a lot of enlightenment. However, Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty is a different one, as its main character is a black, handsome horse called Black Beauty. Sewell has spent 6 years on this book, while she was seriously sick. Unfortunately, she died soon after her only book in her whole life was published. As Sewell was crippled and unable to walk since a young age, she by nature had sympathy on the poor animals. The author started this story by Black Beauty describing his memory about his happy childhood, when he was accompanied by his mother and taught to be a good horse. At the age of 2, Black Beauty witnessed an accident of hunting for a hare, which caused the rider falling from the horse, dead. Later that wounded horse was killed. And at the age of 4, Black Beauty was old enough to begin the use of saddle, bridle, carriage harness and shoes. Then he was sent to Birtwick Park and named of Black Beauty by Mrs. Gordon. Birtwick Park became his first pleasant home for three years, where he grew strong and met many friends with different characteristics and experiences. One of his friends was Ginger, who was ill-tempered because of a hard life with previous owners. And as a result, Ginger often got wild and bit others. Sir Oliver got a shortened tail because his previous owner thought it was fashionable. Also, there was a groom, little Joe Green. At first, he was too young to know how to properly how to take care of the hot and tired Black Beauty after an emergency, making Black Beauty seriously sick. Grieved, Joe began to do his best to learn hors care. However, soon, the Gorgons had to move because of Mrs. Gordon’s health, so they sold Black Beauty and Ginger to Earlshall Park.

This time, Black Beauty was lucky to have a kind-hearted new owner; a cab driver in London called Jerry. What’s more, Jerry’s families were all kind-hearted, which made Black Beauty happy to bear the hard work of pulling a cab every day. By chance, he met Ginger. She was mistreated as a cab horse; in such a great pain that she was longing for death. And soon, it came true. At the same time, Jerry became weaker and weaker, and finally he was ill in bed after waiting for two customers on a bitter cold night. After his recovery, Jerry was told not to work as s cab driver any more, so Black Beauty was sold again.

Black Beauty’s new owner, a corn dealer, was kind to him, but the dealer’s foreman, Jakes, often overworked the horse and used the bearing rein. Once advertised by a kind lady, Jakes was easier on Black Beauty. However, the dark stables nearly made Black Beauty blind. After sold to work as a cab horse again, Beauty was too old and too weak. Once he was exhausted because of the heavy load. Saved from being put down by a doctor, Beauty found a new owner, a farmer. With full effort, he rejuvenated Beauty and sold him to Miss Ellen and Miss Blomefield. To Beauty’s surprise, he met Joe Green there. Form then on, Black Beauty began a happy life at his last home.

After reading this book, one may admire Black Beauty’s strong will, persistence, and loyalty, or feel sympathetic on him and feel happy for him to get a happy ending. However, it needs our deeper thinking, a much deeper thinking. In fact, Sewell doesn’t only focus on showing Black Beauty’s great characteristics. By telling Black Beauty’s whole life story, she aimed at revealing the hard life of animals at that time and altering us the crime of those who abuse animals.

From Beauty’s suffering during his whole life time, we can see the tragic life of animals at that time. Some people ran after the so-called fashion blindly. In order to satisfy their own vanity，they ignored animals’ great pain. For example, Sir Oliver’s shortened tail. What the so-called fashion gave animals is great pain rather than a beautiful appearance. Some people knew nothing about how to keep animals, and were always making them work all day long. They abused the animals to make as much money as possible until they died. Therefore, on the day when the animals died, their holiday was on the way. At last, I want to conclude by a sentence from this book,“there is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it dose not teach them to be good and kind to other animals as well as humans, it is all a shame”

During this term I have read a novel The Red and the Black. The novel was written by the French writer Stendhal in the 19th century. Marie·Henri Beyle better known by his pen name Stendhal was one of the critical realism French writers in the 19th century . The military and theatrical worlds of the First French Empire were a revelation to Beyle. Indeed, the main opinion in human society from the very past about nature is to set war against or conquer it. In fact, many of human’s progresses are made on the base of such opinion. Rachel Carson was the first person who doubted the correctness of the belief and brought the topic under focus.

In Silent Spring, Carson described a miserable village which was dying under the using of DDT. The village used to be prosperous and beautiful. In spring, white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields. In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a backdrop of pines. Then foxed barked in the hills and deer silently crossed the fields, half hidden in the mists of the fall mornings. She thought that with the using of variety kinds of pesticide, especially DDTs, the village suffered enormous and irreversible damage and gradually withered and died. Moreover Carson also sharply pointed out that the deep-seated cause for the environmental problem is the human’s arrogance and ignorance. So she asked people to correct the attitude toward the nature and reconsidered the developing path of human being.

Carson thought that because of the antibody and differentiation, pesticides would never be completely useful. On the contrary, those more and more poisonous medicines, because of the enrichment effect, would accumulate in humans’ body. It’s quite sarcastic that we hurt ourselves much badly while hurting the others. Then she analyzed many poisonous components in pesticides. Those are all unfamiliar names except DDT, such as chlordane, chloronaphthalene, compound 497, etc.

Those things really make me feel scared. We are on the top of the food chain, and it is such a perfect and fragile system. We human beings are just part of it and we depend on all of the creatures who stay on the lower positions. It is so hard and ridiculous to try to match the nature. Only in the state does man have a rational existence. Every species have their value to be on this world. Then no one knows what would happened if we force them to disappear. For example, let’s imagine the food chain as a meticulously made castle built by billions of little blocks and we human beings are the top one. There might be several tiny blocks on the bottom which you think is useless and dispensable. But what would happen if we take them away? Perhaps nothing happened, and perhaps the whole castle ruined.

Destruction is always much easier than recovery, not counting those incurable ones. Humans always think that we are much cleverer than the other animals, so we become more and more conceited and firmly believe that we are the king. We didn’t see that the nature is so magical and knows how to revenge. The pay back is much more violent and cruel. We need balance and order. The nature has its own rule. Our aim is to use it and live in harmony with it. The ecosystem is so delicate that even a tiny disturbance could lead an unexpected consequence, just like the butterfly effect.

At the last chapter, some scientists came up with other ways to solve the pest problem----biotic control. There is now a bly running tide of interest in chemical sterility.
