For almost two hundred years, the White House has stood as a symbol of the Presidency, the United States government, and the American people. Its history, and the history of the nations capital, began when President George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790 declaring that the federal government would reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square...on the river Potomac." It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in. After Abraham Lincolns presidency, Inaugural crowds became far too large for the White House to accommodate them comfortably. However, not until Grover Clevelands first presidency did this unsafe practice change. He held a presidential review of the troops from a flag-draped grandstand built in front of the White House. This procession evolved into the official Inaugural parade we know today. Receptions on New Years Day and the Fourth of July continued to be held until the early 1930s.

President Clintons open house on January 21, 1993 renewed a venerable White House Inaugural tradition. Two thousand citizens, selected by lottery, were greeted in the Diplomatic Reception Room by President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore.

Hello ！welcome to the special Chinese new years edition of discovering China. Im Alina Li and Im Ben Hedges, and today well be taking you through some of the most important traditions of Chinese new year and historical background. We will look at some of the legends behind Chinese new year and how to celebrate it. Here in the US and Chinese across the world.

The Chinese have specific way to celebrate their new year. If you walk down the street in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, you see a variety of ancient traditions such as red banners, firecrackers and lion dance performances, streets are filled with lively celebration.

However, legend has said that the new year has not always been a time of festivity. An Asian Chinese story told a chilly start to this festive holiday, it begins with an ancient Chinese beast called Nian.

Every New Year Nian would rise from swelling in the sea to ravage Chinese village in livestock and hurting people. The villages soon found out from a wise gray-haired old man that the only way to scare the beast away was to set off firecrackers and light lamps and to hang red banners on each door. As the story goes, this was the beginning of a tradition that would last thousands of years.

So this story leads to the creation of many of other traditions for celebrating Chinese New Year. lets take a look at some of these traditions.

因为人的记忆力有选择啊，有的人天生对语言天生敏感，所以记得就快，有的人对历史敏感，记忆历史就比别人快。所以人的记忆力不能一概而论，这是我多年学习的经验，和个人理解。

第一，你不要把英语单词当成中文的象形文字来记，中文的记忆有形象关系，但是单词时无意义的字母排序，背得时候一定要理解英语的发音规律，先要记没个单词的发音，有的发音如tioneror什么的你一定发现了几个字母组合法特定的音，按发音记！

有时候宁肯先记发音！

因为有时候，你甚至能根据发音，你自己就能写出来，何必要背。其实英语的字母单词，不是很规律的，不想拼音的，但还是有一定的规律。

其实背英语单词，不能死记是真的，但是一定要持之以恒，首先要有心理准备，要有自信。

你背英语单词的时候可以边默读便用笔在一张纸上写，就是随便写一些，主要是加深印象。

我的习惯是第一次背时先写5遍/单词，隔天写3遍/单词。过一段时间再重复。这样记虽然慢，但是很扎实。

而且还要注意，背单词应该背词典，就是你背一个词的形式，比如名词，最好翻阅词典，把其他的形式也给背过。这样看起来，似乎比较费脑子，实际上我认为，这样无形中很快，因为你背单词就是要用在阅读上，这样背的话既实用又能无形中体会出英语的变形规律，以后就会背的很快乐。

英语背单词，实际取决于你已经背的单词量。

在中国,凡逢春节和其他的喜庆日子,人们总要燃放爆竹来表示庆贺.燃放爆竹可以说是中国民间一个十分重要的风俗习惯.
