Once at the Lowood School, Jane finds that her life is far from idyllic. The school’s headmaster is Mr. Brocklehurst, a cruel, hypocritical, and abusive man. The wedding day arrives, and as Jane and Mr. Rochester prepare to exchange their vows, the voice of Mr. Mason cries out that Rochester already has a wife. Mason introduces himself as the brother of that wife—a woman named Bertha. Mr. Mason testifies that Bertha, whom Rochester married when he was a young man in Jamaica, is still alive. Rochester does not deny Mason’s claims, but he explains that Bertha has gone mad. He takes the wedding party back to Thornfield, where they witness the insane Bertha Mason scurrying around on all fours and growling like an animal. Rochester keeps Bertha hidden on the third story of Thornfield and pays Grace Poole to keep his wife under control. Bertha was the real cause of the mysterious fire earlier in the story. Knowing that it is impossible for her to be with Rochester, Jane flees Thornfield.

Penniless and hungry, Jane is forced to sleep outdoors and beg for food. At last, three siblings who live in a manor alternatively called Marsh End and Moor House take her in. He surprises her one day by declaring that her uncle, John Eyre, has died and left her a large fortune: 20,000 pounds. When Jane asks how he received this news, he shocks her further by declaring that her uncle was also his uncle: Jane and the Riverses are cousins. Jane immediately decides to share her inheritance equally with her three newfound relatives.

St. John decides to travel to India as a missionary, and he urges Jane to accompany him—as his wife. Jane agrees to go to India but refuses to marry her cousin because she does not love him. 高尔基曾经说过这样一句话：“书是人类进步的阶梯。”“他其实说出了这样一个道理：人类要努力地攀登，攀登书籍的阶梯。而书籍做成的阶梯上面，是一座金碧辉煌的知识宫殿，所以，我们一定要努力地去攀登，去汲取。

人类创造的知识财富，如同浩瀚的海洋，博大精深。人们常把小学、中学、大学阶段的学习形容为在“书山“上攀登，在“学海“中遨游。所以，我们应该多读书，用书来净化心灵，用书中的知识充实自己。

在我们的生活中，如果总是太过于被动地去读书，往往是体会不到读书的乐趣的。捧一纸书香，打开一点温存的光，就那么静静地看着文字随着时间的舞步从你眼前滑过……这时，你就会感觉到，读书是一件多么让人快乐的事情！读书是一种心情，那一抹书香带来的舒坦是最好的心理试剂。去读书吧，你一定会有更多的发现。

多读书，还应读好书。读书要应有个选择性，对书本中的知识也要有选择的采纳，就是所谓取其精华。

“书”是我们最真实的朋友，“读书”则是我们每天必不可少的一件事情。“读书”大家都知道，用处不用一一再说了。而“读书”的好处，却是多之又多。

“读书”就像吃饭，读的书越多，消化的越多，如果有一天不想看书或读书了，那自己就想一想，为什么一日三餐?每天都要吃饭，既然吃了饭，也要一日三次的读书，多读几回，这样对自己有帮助，会记得更加的牢固，在脑海中，熟知又熟。

“读书”可以让我们增长知识，让我们的视野更加广泛，更加的开朗。有一句话是：“书中自有黄金屋，书中自有颜如玉”。这句话，让我知道了，读的书越多，就越富有;读的书越多，就越宝贵。就算是千金也难以买到“书”中宝贵的知识。读书是那么的重要，读书是那么的可贵。它让我知道了，没有知识的人是多么的失败。

“读书”的人，一般都是风度翩翩，彬彬有礼。有的人说：“我是个读书人，可有文凭了。”这样说的人，大部分都是不仔细读书的人。读书人是不会那样的炫耀自己的，而且还很低调。

读书的好处真的是多得数不来呀!

多读书，读好书，这句话记在了我的心中，无论到哪里，有知识的人，走遍天下;没知识的人，寸步难行啊。
