According to the Chinese tradition，at the very beginning of a new year，

when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky， there should be thousands

of colorful lanterns hung out.

During the Lantern Festival， people will try to solve the puzzles on the

lanterns and eat yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball)。

In the Sui Dynasty in the sixth century， Emperor Yangdi invited envoys from

other countries to China to see the colorful lighted lanterns and enjoy the gala

performances.

By the beginning of the Tang Dynasty in the seventh century， the lantern

displays would last three days. The emperor also lifted the curfew， allowing the

people to enjoy the festive lanterns day and night.

In the Song Dynasty， the festival was celebrated for five days and the

activities began to spread to many of the big cities in China.

Today，3the displaying of lanterns is still a big event on the 15th day of

the first lunar month throughout China.

The fillings inside the dumplings or Yuansiao are either sweet or salty.

Sweet fillings are made of sugar，Walnuts，sesame，osmanthus flowers，rose petals，or

jujube paste etc. A single ingredient or any combination can be used as the

filling . The salty variety is filled with minced meat，vegetables etc.

As is known to us all, the most precious thing in the world is nothing but

“today”. Therefore, it is necessary and significant for us to manage our time

efficiently. There are some suggestions and methods to manage our time.

First, the most important thing is to know and understand how we have spent

and managed our time before. Only in this way can we know in which we have

wasted our time. We can do this by sorting out all things we do every day and

then select the necessary thing and the wasted time.

Second, after the first step, what we should do is choosing the correct

time. As the saying goes, “to choose time is to save time”. For one thing, we

我叫陈远，由于“远”和“圆”读音相似，不知哪天起，大家都叫我“小圆子”。我的脸又长的特圆，久而久之，我觉得这个外号倒挺有意思的。

我跑步时两脚替换的频率特别快，而步子又特别小，跑起来一步紧跟一步。每次跑步，同学们都笑我：“小圆子，你跑步真有趣，像一只球在滚，滚的快极了。”啊，是吗?我可从没有看见过，不过我知道我跑得挺快的，尤其是短跑。在运动会上，我居然也会“滚”出点名堂来了，和其他三人“滚”出两次4×100米接力第一，两次100米第六。能为集体争光，我真自豪。我最喜欢说话，语速又特别快，就像竹篓倒豆子一样，一上子能滚出上百颗圆豆儿。可我这个人生就是头脑简单，什么事情都是来不及考虑会脱口而出，以至有时上课也会和同学争论起来。唉，真是…………我真想把“圆豆儿”吞下去。我是个科代表，我热爱自己的工作，因为我爱我的集体。生活在集体中就是要为集体做贡献。可有时工作不顺利时，我还好几次掉“金豆儿”——眼泪。不过我还是愿意为集体工作的。我爱掉“金豆儿”，因为“金豆儿”也是圆的。

“小圆子”这个外号对我真是太合适不过了。我好比一滴圆圆的小水滴，只有汇入大海才不会干涸，我愿去拼搏，去夺取光彩夺目、圆圆的金牌，而无愧于一上新世纪的青年。

茉莉的个头小小的，雪白的小花散发出的纯洁、神圣、甜郁的香气，是玫瑰、牡丹，甚至是所有的植物都望尘莫及的。

茉莉的叶片也是小小的，显得毫不起眼。绿油油的小叶片呈椭圆形，尾部圆尖。乳白色的花瓣上没有一丝瑕疵，像洁白无瑕的雪。茉莉的花瓣非常精致，有如美玉雕刻而成。白得纯澈的花瓣圆圆的，末尾尖尖地一收，显得俏皮又可爱。茉莉的花瓣虽小，但是很厚，还非常多。一朵小小的茉莉就有十八到二十片花瓣，像瓦片一样叠起来，叠成三四层，像一朵小雪花，又像一把打开的小白伞。

茉莉的香气鲜灵、清纯，还有着“一花能熏一室香”的美誉呢!这样小小的一朵花居然可以散发出如此美妙的香气，是不是非常不可思议?如果你想让茉莉长得更加繁茂，那就趁它在四、五月份抽枝长叶时剪去一部分新长出的嫩枝，可以使它的新枝再发，从而长得更加茂盛。

Last Monday, we had a monitor election. At the beginning the two candidates, LiuDong and Wang Hong gave us a speech introducing themselves and telling us their plans in the future. Then we had a vote. We wrote down the name of the better one in our mind and put the paper in a box. Then the exciting time came that our teacher counted the number and wrote it on the blackboard. The result was that 28 students who voted Wang Hong, 13 more than the number of students who voted LiuDong, which meaned WangHong was elected as our monitor. Wang is really pretty good. I believe she will be a good monitor.

我的表哥是一个阳光、帅气、学习又好的三好少年，他的学习成绩在年级中排前十名。我就来给你们介绍介绍他吧。

我表哥叫姜喆，他长了个方形脸，眼睛小小的，鼻梁上架着一副眼镜，很帅气。他很喜欢打篮球，给成年人比几乎不相上下，他的个子很高。他的眼睛是因为学习而近视的，可见他的学习是有多么好。

有一次，我去我表哥家玩，我在他家门口，一直在敲门，可不见有人来开，我想：难道表哥不在家?我拿出手机，给表哥打了一个电话，可是电话也没人接，这是怎么回事?这时，我姨妈来了，她看到我在家门口，就问：“你怎么不进去呀?”我说：“表哥没在家，没人给我开门啊。”姨妈说：“不可能呀，他现在应该在家写作业呢。”说着姨妈把门打开，我来到表哥的房间，看到他正在专心致志地学习。我问：“哥哥，我在门口敲门你没有听见吗?”他被我吓了一跳，说：“对不起，我没听见。”我心里想：表哥学习可太认真了。

当表哥写完作业后，表哥对我说：“我们一起去打篮球吧。”我说：“好呀。”我们来到篮球场，因为下午热，现在没有一个人。表哥在那里独自打起来，这时，来了三个人，它们也是打篮球的。我表哥对他们说：“我们来打场比赛吧!”他们说：“行!”

我有一个大红色的保温杯，这个保温杯已经陪伴我八、九个月了。上面的图案是一辆黑色的轿车和一辆红色的轿车。

这两辆赛车是一部叫做《汽车总动员》的电影里来的，它们都有一双眼睛和一张嘴巴，好像能开口说话似的。这上面画着各种建筑，都是那么精致美丽，赛道上有一座大桥，上面有许多房子，好像很多人都在看着这场比赛。

这个保温杯可以把热水保温，只要把热水倒进去，不管到什么时候都是热的，还可以用来泡茶，只要放一点茶叶进去，倒上热水就可以了。因为里面有筛子，所以可以直接把茶水倒在杯子上，而不会把里面的茶叶倒出来，可以放心的使用。

我很喜欢这个茶杯，但是我不是很喜欢红色，这个茶杯是五颜六色的，五彩缤纷的。

这个茶杯是我爸爸买来给我的，我很喜欢，我一定会好好珍惜的。

今年2月28日是正月十五元宵节，元宵节各地的过法都差不多，都有吃元宵、舞狮子、观花灯等习俗。其中，吃元宵是一种独特的小吃，吃起来香甜甜香的，令人齿颊留香。那么，你们知道元宵节为什么要吃元宵吗，让我来讲给你听吧!

元宵起源于春秋时期的楚昭王，是楚昭王回国途中乘船在长江时，看见江面上漂着几个浮物，颜色是白的还有一点儿黄，船工捞起来献给了楚昭王。昭王在吃的时候发现里面有红如胭脂的瓤，味道鲜美。回国后，昭王命令人以山楂为瓤，仿制给臣民食用，以庆祝家国团圆。这一天，正好是正月十五，后代相沿成习。

如今，过元宵节的时候，北方人称其为元宵，在南方确称“汤圆。这些与“团圆“音近，取团圆之意，又逢十五月圆之夜，象征着全家人团团圆圆，和睦幸福，人们也用此来思念离别的新人。

I have a lot of troubles, such as going to school, homework, and parents’

ramble. They like the stars in the sky. I am afraid of the darkness. This is my

biggest trouble. At night, I am fear of going out alone. And when my parents

sleep, I even can’t go to the toilet. Therefore, I never drink water before

sleep. And I always turn on the light when I am sleeping. I know it’s not good

but I can’t sleep in the darkness.

Almost every child will complain about their parents sometimes. It is

natural, because when people stay together for a long time, they will start to

have argument. But ignore about the unhappy time, our parents love us all the

time. No matter what happen to us, they will stand by our sides. We should be

grateful to them and try to understand them.

I love my school so much, because of the beautiful environment. The first

day I walk into the school, I am very impressed by the green trees and the

colorful flowers. It seems that I just walk into a park and get lost in the

green world. The trees and flowers make me feel so comfortable, and my heart

feel the peace.

The Stilwell Scholarship she founded helps support deserving students from China who have come to the Monterey Institute to pursue professional degrees in translation and interpretation, international policy studies, language teaching and business management.

It is quite usual that one meets failures, for ones life can never be

plain sailing. However, diffhrent people hold diffhrent attitudes towards

failure. Some people think it a heavy blow to fail in achieving something and

they can not endure failure. When they meet failure, they will be seriously

dejected and can never pluck up their courage to try again. However, others

think it natural to meet failures in ones career. Therefore, they are

psychologically prepared. When they meet failures, they will not be frustrated.

Instead, they will continue to meet new challenges. As to me, Im in favor of

the latter view. Failure is really a terrible thing but it is also the mother of

success. If one draws lessons from failures, in most cases he will get success

in the future. Furthermore, ones life can never be smooth sailing; it must be

full of difficuhies and setbacks. If one is daunted by difficuhies and

frustrations, he will always be a failure. However, if one holds a positive

attitude toward failure, he will overcome difficulties and frustrations to win

victory.

According to a recent article on Newsweek concerning children’s’ education,

there is an increasing number of parents worrying their kids to an extreme

extent, depriving them of independence and freedom by keeping them around

parents all the time.

Some people applaud this phenomenon, suggesting that kids’ safety is the

most important. Thus, they’d better not enter the hazardous society without

supervision unless they become adults. From my point of view, some of their

opinion is correct but keeping children away from independence is a completely

erroneous decision. The reasons are as follows:

First and foremost, “locking kids” may hinder their healthy growth, both

mentally and physically. The kids who are locked may have heavy reliance on

their parents, as their comprehensive skills such as communication skills or

cooperative spirit being prevented from developing.

Secondly, what these parents fail to see is the fact that the crime rate

and accidents aren’t on a rapid rise. It is the abuse of mass media that make

crimes and violence more scary. The parents, who love their kids so much, are

completely forced to live under the illusion that our society is full of riots

or threats of accidents. Thus, kids can be allowed to have more freedom such as

walking to school by himself, for instance.

From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw a conclusion that

kids should be given more freedom by parents’ effort. At the same time, parents

should take many factors into consideration such as the time restriction for

children and the evaluation to kids’ maturity and capability. Only then can they

enjoy a safe and meaningful childhood.

我叫吴康琪，今年八岁了，我是个男生。我的头发黄黄的，耳朵大大的，鼻子扁扁的像三毛的鼻子一样。

我爱打篮球，踢足球，打乒乓球，我还爱捕鱼，我最爱的还是游泳。记得第一次游泳是在大海里。因为不会游，我喝了好多水，海水非常的咸。我不禁问爸爸：“海水怎么这么咸呀?”爸爸无奈知识不渊博，也没答上来。

第二次去游泳的时候，爸爸给我买了一个游泳圈，一开始我不会游，爸爸对我说：“你慢慢地学，别太着急了。”我就听了爸爸的话，经过我的不懈努力，我最后终于学会了游泳。

Yesterday, I asked my mother to buy me some candies. It was my favorite

white rabbit rolls. When my mother bought it for me, I ate a little and hided

the rest. I was going to bring them to school to give them to my primary school

deskmate, Xiao Fang, because today is white day. I want to give present to her

to make her happy on this special day. I will give the candies to her later.
