谈到生命，萧红在《呼兰河传》里写了这么一段话：“逆来顺受，你说我的生命可惜，我自己却不在乎。你看着很危险，我却自以为得意。不得意怎样?人生是苦多乐少。”

从中我们可以窥见的是，衡量生命的意义，并不在于他人的评定是非，而在于自己。

很多时候，我们习惯将生命囚禁在约定俗成的镣铐里，企图用同一个准则去猜想他人的生命。这当然难免武断，因为在我们眼中，好像只有牺牲和无私的奉献才具有成为“英雄”的资格，好像只有仕途顺利、盆钵皆满才算得上“成功”的生命——如本雅明所说：“一名在二十二岁就死去的诗人，在他生命里的每时每刻，就是一名在二十二岁就死去的诗人。”

但我们应当明白，生命的精彩和复杂，是绝不能够被死亡复刻，被世俗所禁锢的。
