Yangzhou (simplified Chinese: 扬州) is a prefecture-level city in central Jiangsu Province, Peoples Republic of China. Sitting on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, it borders the provincial capital of Nanjing to the southwest, Huaian to the north, Yancheng to the northeast, Taizhou to the east, and Zhenjiang across the river to the south. The annual average precipitation is 1,030 mm, and about 45 percent of rainfall is concentrated in the summer. The rainy season known as "plum rain season" usually lasts from mid-June to late July. During this season, the plums are ripening, hence the name plum rain.

Cuisine

Yangzhou dishes may be one of the reasons why the people of Yangzhou are so infatuated with their city. They have an appealing color, aroma, taste and appearance. The original color of each ingredient is preserved after cooking, and no oily sauce is added, so as to retain the fresh savor of the food.

In Yangzhou all dishes, whether cheap or expensive, are elaborate. Cooks will not scrimp on their work, even with Zhugansi (stewed sliced dry bean curd), a popular dish that costs only a few yuan. Dry bean curd is made by each restaurant that serves it, so the flavor is guaranteed. The cook slices the 1-cm-thick curd into 30 shreds, each one paper-thin but none broken, and then stews them for hours with chopped bamboo shoots and shelled shrimps in chicken soup. In this way the dry bean curd shreds can soak up the flavor of the other ingredients, and the soup is clear but savory. We will look at some of the legends behind Chinese new year and how to celebrate it. Here in the US and Chinese across the world.

The Chinese have specific way to celebrate their new year. If you walk down the street in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, you see a variety of ancient traditions such as red banners, firecrackers and lion dance performances, streets are filled with lively celebration.

However, legend has said that the new year has not always been a time of festivity. An Asian Chinese story told a chilly start to this festive holiday, it begins with an ancient Chinese beast called Nian.

Every New Year Nian would rise from swelling in the sea to ravage Chinese village in livestock and hurting people. The villages soon found out from a wise gray-haired old man that the only way to scare the beast away was to set off firecrackers and light lamps and to hang red banners on each door. As the story goes, this was the beginning of a tradition that would last thousands of years.

So this story leads to the creation of many of other traditions for celebrating Chinese New Year. lets take a look at some of these traditions.

Nowadays, there are many kinds of activities for people entertaining in their leisure time, especially in holiday, such as climbing a mountain, having a picnic, holding a party and so on. However, these recreational activities have its advantages but also bring some harmful influences to people’s lives.

First, to some extent, these recreational activities enrich people’s lives. Those who take part in different activities will not be easy to feel lonely or boring in their leisure time and live wonderful lives instead. Second, taking part in some group activities is a good form to strengthen friendships. For example, many students will hold a union to collect their old classmates or friends in winter holiday so that they have a common time to communicate with each other. Last but not least, such activities like climbing a mountain provide a good chance to do exercise.

However, these recreational activities also bring some problems at the same time. For one thing, taking part in too many these activities will increase the burden of themselves or their families because it is inevitable to spend some money in holding these activities. For another, some recreational activities have potential harm for participants’ health, particularly staying up all night, drinking and smoking.

Therefore, in my opinion, we have to make a careful consideration before we take part in these recreational activities.

Today is the Dragon Boat Festival in the 5th day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Every year, aunt will pack lots of delicious food. Sweet sweet jujube dumplings for us, especially my mother and I like it best. You can also eat with your elders and sisters at your grandmothers house, and enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival, but this year, it is not so lively. Uncle and aunt went out to earn money. Uncle went out with his sister. There were only three family members and grandparents. It looks very cold.
