The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840s by Irish immigrants fleeing their countrys potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.

The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the trees trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. Jack made a deal with the devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let him down the tree.

According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer.

The Irish used turnips as their "Jacks lanterns" originally. But when the immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins were far more plentiful than turnips. So the Jack-O-Lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember.

So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. It grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans. 今天，我和爸爸妈妈一起去成都玩，已经约好了舅舅来接我们的，但我们把下车的地点弄错了，舅舅没在那儿。

7月22日这一天，最大的事情莫过于观测日全食了，成都新闻从早上六点多就现场直播，画面上好多人摆着专业的观测工具，

还有好些人专程赶到成都来看日全食呢。更有趣的是，居然有一对新人在今天坐热气球观日食结婚，有好多人为他们喝彩呢!

结果，天公不作美，天上一直阴沉沉的，太阳老躲在云背后，或许她也害羞了呢!这么多人同时看他，虽然是高高在上的太阳公公，也扭捏起来了。

初亏是看不到了，人们感觉没什么变化，日食正在进行中，天空也没什么显著的变化，依然是阴沉沉的，但没有电视里说的黑暗瞬间的到来，我们将信将疑的看着天空，云依然很厚，太阳只是偶尔露出一点点，但很快就躲回去了。
