Carrying Faggots to Put Out a Fire

In the last years of the Warring States period, the State of Qin attacked the State of Wei on a large scale repeatedly and occupied large areas of land, for the State of Wei was too weak to defend itself. In 273 B.B., the qin army launched another attack upon the State of Wei with a momentum more vigorous than ever. The king of the State of Wei summoned his officials,and asked with a worried look if anyone could propose a way to defeat the Qin army. After years of chaos caused by the wars,the officials trembled when fighting was mentioned, and no one dared to speak ofresistance. At the critical moment when a large enemy force was bearing down upon the border, most of the offinials persuaded the king to sue for peace, at the cost of giving away to the State of Qin the large area of land north of the Huanghe River and south of the Taihang Mountain. However Su Dai, a counsellor, did not agree. He hurried up to the king and said:"Your Majesty, they dont think about the interests of the country at all.It is just because they are cowardly and afraid of death that they ask you to sue for peace by betraying the country. Of course you can temperarily satisfy the ambition of the king of the State of Qin is insatiably greedy. It will never stop assaulting us until our land is totally given away."Once there was a man whose house was on fire. People told him to put out the fire with water, but he would not listen. Instead, he carried a faggot to put out the fire, only to make the fire fiercer. 说到这里，苏代讲了一个故事：从前有一个人，他的房子起火了，别人劝他快用水去浇灭大火，但他不听，偏抱起一捆柴草去救火，是因为他不懂得柴草不但不能灭火反而能助长火势的道理。大王若同意拿着魏国土地去求和，不就等于抱着柴草救火吗？”

尽管苏代讲得头头是道，但是胆小的魏王只顾眼前的太平，还是依大臣们的意见把魏国大片土地割让给秦国。到公元225年，果然秦军又向魏国大举进攻，包围了国都大梁，掘开黄河大堤让洪水淹没了大梁城，魏国终于被秦国灭掉了。

故事出自《史记魏世家》。成语“抱薪救火”比喻用错误的方法去消灭祸害，结果反而使祸害扩大。

[中学生英文作文：我的快乐周末(My happy weekend)

有两则关于同一条英语谚语Blood is thicker than water的译例。其一是“清水不浓血却浓”，其二是“血浓于水”。从字面上看，上述两则译例译得固然不错，似无可厚非。译文读起来很顺，又比较易懂，但读后似有不知所云之感。

这是因为译文的形象没能准确地传达出这条谚语的喻义来。

Longman Dictionary of English Idioms（p.28）上对这条谚语的解释是“The relationship between people of the same family is stronger than other，relationships”因此，这则谚语似可以借用汉语中一句俗语“亲不亲一家人”来译更能表达出“属于同一血缘关系的一家人比别人更亲近一些”的寓意。

语言是文化的表现形式。谚语同文学作品、诗歌一样是语言的精华。英语谚语是富于色彩的语言形式，一般具有生动形象、喻义明显、富于哲理的语言特征。在一定程度上，英语谚语反映了英语民族的文化特点。因此，翻译英语谚语时，仅仅以语言之间词汇的同义性（等价性）为前提，寻求对等的表现是不够的。译者须较多运用汉语的表现手段，力求能再现英语谚语的语言风格和丰富内涵。只有多注意英语谚语字面以外所特有的语言内涵色彩，才能使译文讽喻得当，宜于说理，又不失原来谚语所具有的语言形象。

某些英语谚语和汉语成语、俗语在表现形式和含义方面是一致的或基本一致的。汉译这些英语时，可惜用与其喻义相同或相近的成语或谚语及俗语直接对译。这样不但可以比较好地保持原文的神韵和形式，又使译文易于为读者或听者接受。如：

Pride comes before a fall．骄兵必败。

Amiss is as good as a mile.差之毫厘，失之千里。

Two is company，but three is none.两个和尚抬水吃，三个和尚无水吃。

Walls have ear.隔墙有耳。

Enough is as good as a feast．知足常乐。

有些英语谚语虽然在语言习惯和文化背景方面和其相对的汉语谚语之间存在着某些差异，而且所比喻的事物并不一样，但他们的喻义却相互吻合，而且表达方式也很相似，汉译这些英语谚语时，常常需要“易其形式，存其精神”，即采用形象近似的汉语成语意译。这样可使译文既喻义明显，又含而不露，且可再现原文所具有的语言效果，容易达意。如：

Two can play the game.孤掌难鸣。

Newbroom sweeps clean.新官上任三把火。

Speak of the devil，and he appears.说曹操，曹操到。

The grass is greener on the other side of the hill．这山望着那山高。

Putting the cart before the horse.本末倒置。

有些英语谚语意在言外，语言含蓄，寓意深刻。如果仅从字面意义直译成汉语，而不领会原文的具体含义及其效果，译文势必平淡无味。这样既不能表达意思，又有损于原文的语言形象和丰富内涵。因此，在翻译时，应在汉语中寻找那些与原文喻义相同或效果相似的成语、谚语或俗语来表达，则会使译文形象生动，准确达意。试比较下列各译例。

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.如译成“住在玻璃房子里的人，不应扔石头”不如译成“己有过，勿正人”或“责人必先责己”。

In fair weather prepare for the foul．如译成“晴天要防阴天”，不如译成“有备无患”或“居安思危”或“未雨绸缪”。

Murder will out．如译成“谋杀终必败露”，不如译成“纸包不住火”。

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread．如译成“愚者敢闯天使不敢去的地方”，不如译成“初生牛犊不怕虎”。

One cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs.如译成“想吃煎蛋卷，就得打鸡蛋”，不如译成工“有得必有失”或甚至可以引申为“不破不立”。

如果所要翻译的谚语喻义清新，形象逼真，按其字面直译其意，就能表达出原文的喻义来，则可直译。这样做既能较完整地保存原文的表达方式，且又可丰富我们自己的语言文化，一举两得，请看下面的译例。

God helps those who help themselves.上帝帮助那些自己帮助自己的人。或“自助者天助之”。

Money is the root of all evil．金钱是万恶之源。

An empty sack cannot stand upright．空袋立不直。

Do as you would be done by. 以你所期望的别人待你的方式待人。

这与另一谚语： Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you.“己所不欲勿施于人”很相似。

Money talks.钱能通神。

有些英语谚语常常采用对称的修辞手段。使用这一修辞手段的目的在于加强语势，宜于说理，读后有心悦诚眼之感。汉译这些谚语时，应适当注意保持其修辞色彩，以便体现原文的表达方式。如：

You may take a horse to the water， but you can’t make it drink．

如果按字面译成，“你可以把马牵到河边去，但不能叫它饮水”至少是没有充分体现这句谚语本身所具有的强烈对比色彩。从语法分析的观点看，在这个句子里，情态动词may和can虽然都表示“可能”的，但在含义上有所不同。这里may表示“事实上的可能性”，而can则表示“逻辑上的可能性”。并列连词but使前后两个分句意义相反，对比色彩强烈。在这种情况下，译文也必须力求对偶整齐，前后呼应，形成对照。如将此句译作“牵马河边易，逼它饮水难”或“老牛不喝水，不能强按头”会更好些。

总之，即使像谚语这样孤立的语句，翻译时也需尽一番揣摩切磋之功，否则译文就可能与原文“貌合神离”，文不达意。译事艰辛也许正在于此。

我国古代人就十分孝顺。比如《三字经》中的黄香，在他9岁时母亲就去世了，他十分悲伤。可母亲已经活不过来了，于是，他决定把对母亲的思念以及爱全部都倾注到父亲身上。冬天的天气十分冷，晚上睡觉时，黄香就先躺在父亲的被中，等被窝热后才回到自己冷冰冰的被窝里。

我们现代人也不甘落后，就让我们看一看陈毅大元帅的故事吧!有一次，陈毅路过家乡时，回家看望已卧病在床，大小便失控，不能自理的母亲，他帮母亲洗了脏衣服并且做了一些家务事。作为大元帅的陈毅，他每天工作繁忙，日理万机都能抽空回家孝顺母亲，何况我们小学生呢!我们一定要向陈毅大元帅学习。

The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; th day  called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Years Eve  known as chú xī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve".

Chinese New Year  the longest and most important festivity in the Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year  itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year  a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.

Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year  considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), Tibetans and Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (Tt), and formerly the Japanese before 1873 (Oshogatsu). Outside of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, Chinese New Year  also celebrated in countries with significant Han Chinese populations, such as Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. In countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States, although Chinese New Year  not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Australia Post, Canada Post, and the US Postal Service sues New Years themed stamps.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It  also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper  a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by whing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition  a great way to reconcile forgetting all grudges, and sincerely wh peace and happiness for everyone.

Although the Chinese calendar traditionally does not use continuously numbered years, outside China its years are often numbered from the reign of Huangdi. But at least three different years numbered 1 are now used by various scholars, making the year 2009 "Chinese Year" 4707, 4706, or 4646.

一个人骑着摩托车带着父亲环游世界，在旅途中，他们经历了风风雨雨，那辆被改造过的摩托车，一直为他们父子服务着，一直坚韧不拔。儿子精心地照顾着父亲的安危，即使在旅程的路上有过困难和挫折，他们都一点一点的去度过。在几个月的旅程中，他们就这样骑着那辆被改造过的摩托车，环游了：山西·陕西等一些景点，最后，又来到了北京的天安门，跟北京的 老伯谈起了玩往事，有说有笑。一路走来，他们去了十多万公里，拍了无数张照片，这些照片整整把一面墙都贴满了，父亲看着这些照片欣慰地笑了。

走过菩提大道，右手边就是江南石窟——太湖观音了，正中的准提观音高约21，9米，两手盘起，端坐在水莲花上，左手旁有一个小龙女，小龙女手捧莲花，脚踏浮云，宛如仙女一般，右手旁的仙童，手拿竹笛，两脚前后交叉。远远望去，三尊佛像栩栩如生。准提观音是六道中救度人间众生的伟大菩萨，摧破一切众生之惑业，成就延命、除灾、求子诸愿。

With regard to the origin of "Spring Festival", there is a kind of legend that there was a kind of beast called "year" in ancient times of China. "Year", head long antennae, ferocious abnormality. Long years of deep seabed, each to a specific day (which is now the new years Eve) to climb the shore, devouring livestock harm human life. Therefore, every new years Eve, people help the aged and the young stockaded village fled to the mountains, to avoid "year" damage. One year on New Years Eve, the old man begged from the village. The villagers rush to a scene of panic, no one cares about him, only village as an old woman gave the old man some food, and urged him to speed up the mountain to avoid "year", the old man pulled up to the mustache smiled: "if her mother let me stay at home one night, I have to years away." The old woman continued to persuade the old man to laugh without saying.

So there must be fireworks in the Spring Festival

The fireworks in the sky diversiform dressed in brightly coloured, "fireworks into the sky", "bang" sound exploded, the sky suddenly become colorful, the faint powder is like colorful flower blooming. But the drama is not long. The fireworks are fading slowly from the sky until they disappear. Over there, a shock silver light caught my attention, and it sprayed and sprayed up. Falling back then jumped out of the silver, like pearls falling from the sky to tens of thousands of people, very beautiful feeling; snapping, snapping, the deafening sound of firecrackers is certain! 鸦有反哺之恩，羊有跪乳之情。

感恩祖国，赐予我们诗情画意的河山，感恩青春，赋给我们缤纷多彩的梦。感恩老师，似蜡烛燃烧般的无私，更感恩父母，给予我们无尽的呵护与关爱。

我曾经，体会不到“谁言寸草心，报得三春晖”对父母这般深情，甚至于觉得诗人太过矫情与做作，曾固执地认为，父母对我更多的是苛责，却不曾发现，父母将无尽的关爱隐藏在心底，埋藏在点点滴滴。

总是不曾注意到，过马路时父母都会轻轻的牵起我的手，买菜父母总喜欢问我想吃什么，在书桌台前总有一杯温热的牛奶。可面对这些，我回给他们的更多的是漠然与一句漫不经心的“随便”，我后悔，渐渐地，我开始懂得了，父母的爱。

刚回家，父母总会问我冷吗，并将我冰冷的手贴近他们的脸颊，饭桌上，总有冒着热气的饭菜，生病时，父母焦急的面孔，感冒时，桌前的药。父母的爱，隐藏在点点滴滴。

父母的爱，真的很简单，但却不平凡，父母的爱，是简单，亦是伟大，面对犹如滔滔江海的爱，我想回报他们，才发现，自己竟似滴水，无以回报他们的爱，才发现自己是那么的自私，面对他们的无私，我又能怎么做？替他们捶肩捏背，为他们端茶，以优异的成绩回报他们，不与他们拌嘴，可是，面对他们，自己做的这一切太过渺小。母亲的分娩之痛，我体会不到，父亲的劳累奔波，我亦感受不到，我又如何才能做到他们的那般无私，我唯有承载着他们的爱，驶向前方充满荆棘的路，去击碎前方的困难与阻碍。

唯有感恩，感恩父母的苛刻，感恩父母的唠叨，更感谢父母的爱，我会用感恩的心，感谢你们对我无尽的关爱。

Look, this is my bedroom. It s not very big. But it s beautiful and clean. In the middle of my bedroom, there is a bed. There is a teddy bear and some hair clips on it. Beside the bed, there is a desk. Its colour is brown. There are many things on the desk, some pens, a Walkman, a light and many stickers. Oh, there is a chair beside the desk, too. On the right of the desk, there is a bookcase. It s big and tall. There are lots of books in the bookcase. They are comic books, exercise books, story books and copy books.

I used to go abroad for a short-term English study. During that time, I learned a lot of daily life English and saw a lot of different things.

I think language is very interesting. I could express one substance by using different sounds. So I wish I could study and read more English literatures and enlarge my knowledge.

孝，是中华民族的传统美德。百善孝为先，这是民族历史上的佳话。要做一个好人，一个善良的人，一个成功的人，首先就要做到孝。失去啦孝，就好比人已失去啦心脏，只有一具躯壳立于世上，已失去啦生命的价值，更何谈顶天立地、闯出一番天地，在历史上，有许多关于孝的感人事迹，其中在24孝中，有一则是“闵子骞劝父感后母”。感人至深。

闵子骞是周朝时期的人。幼时丧母，父娶某姓女为继室。闵子骞素性讲孝，对待继母像生母一样孝顺。后来继母接连生啦两个儿子，于是对闵子骞开始憎恶起来。总是在丈夫面前说子骞的坏话，挑拔子骞与父亲的关系。

冬天到啦，天气十分寒冷。后娘为两个亲生儿子做的棉衣，内面铺的是十分暖和的棉花;而给子骞做的棉衣，内面铺的是一点也不暖和的芦花。芦花是水中生长的芦草，到处飞扬的那个轻飘飘的花，哪里能御寒呢?所以，子骞穿着觉得冷得很，好像没有穿衣一样。而这位后母反而向丈夫说：“子骞不是冷，他穿的棉衣也是厚厚的。是太骄养啦，故意称冷。”

一天，父亲要外出，子骞为父亲驾驶车马，一阵阵凛冽的寒风吹来，子骞冷得得战票不已，手冻得拿不稳马的缰绳，将缰绳掉到啦地上，马将车子差点儿拉下啦悬崖。父亲大怒，气得扬起马鞭，将子骞猛打。子骞的棉衣被打破啦，内面的芦花飞啦出来。父亲这才明白啦一切。立即回家责骂后妻，要将狠毒的女人赶出家门，将这个心恶女人休掉。后妻像木头一样，呆呆地立着，羞愧得无话可说。子骞跪在父亲面前，哭着劝父亲说：“母在一子寒，母去三子单，请不要赶走母亲。”

好一句“母在一子寒，母去三子单”。这句话不知让多少人所为之动容，就是闵子骞的继母也被感动后悔不已，从此待闵子骞如亲子，这就是孝行的感化和伟大所在。

正所谓“长江后浪推前浪，一代更比一代强”。现在的我们应该更要孝敬父母，更何况孝道是我们的悠久文化和传统美德，但事实好象有点相反，历史的宝贵财富并没有得到部分现代人的认同，甚至有的人还要父母来“孝敬”他们，在他们心中只有父母是天经地义要养他们，要为他们做牛做马的观念。只要自己逍遥快活就够啦，把他人的苦难置之度外。但他们可否想过十月怀胎的痛苦和把一个小婴儿拉扯大的艰辛，难道这也能让人所忘却吗?如果这些都不能感化他们的铁石心肠，那他们只能得到社会的唾骂和抛弃。

孝心无价，作为炎黄子孙的我们要时刻谨记，做人要先做到孝，要把我们的传统美德发扬光大。
