辞官尽孝的包拯少年时便以孝而闻名，性直敦厚。在宋仁宗天圣五年中进士，先任大理寺评事，后出任建昌知县，因为父母年老，不能承受路上的颠簸，不愿随他到他乡去，包拯便马上辞去官职，回家照顾父母。保证的孝心受到官吏们的交口称颂。几年后，父母相继辞世，包拯才重新踏入仕途，这也是在乡亲们的苦苦劝说下去的。
