目前分布于我国的四个老虎亚种(东北虎、华南虎、孟加拉虎和印支虎)中，惟有华南虎是中国独有的。19世纪以前，华南虎曾经广泛分布于以我国东南部为主的国内广大地区。20世纪后，由于自然环境变迁、战乱纷扰及人类活动影响等多方面的原因，华南虎的分布区域不断受到挤压，分布地域面积逐渐缩校直至上个世纪80年代以前，由于捕猎和砍伐森林等活动，使华南虎赖以生存的栖息地受到破坏，华南虎的数量急剧减少。

据以往调查估算，目前中国处于野生状态的华南虎仅有20至30只，养殖在中国动物园里的数量也仅有60只，这仪数量比大熊猫还要稀少。在最近的一次野外考察中，甚至没有发现活的野生华南虎个体，华南虎已接近物种灭绝的边缘。

国家林业局全国野生动植物研究与发展中心的副研究员陆军介绍说，由于动物园中的数量有限，用于交配的华南虎之间的血缘关系越来越亲近，目前有的新产虎崽已经开始出现短尾(尾巴短一结)的现象。毫无疑问，如果任由这一趋势发展下去，在不久的将来，这一世界最濒危动物将不复存在。

There are several reasons accounting for this problem. Apart from the polluted environment and natural disasters, illegal killing is an important reason. Human beings are making attempts to hunt wild animals for fashion and a big profit, which can be seen vividly from the right picture. This has resulted in a sharp decrease in the number of animals.

In my opinion, it is high time for us to take quick action to protect them. A national public campaign should be launched to give animals a good living environment. While the Chinese dragon has been historically a national emblem for China, since the latter half of the 20th century the Giant Panda has also become an informal national emblem for China. 在这个节日里，每一个人都不能捕杀动物，即使他是依靠捕杀动物来维持生计的，也不能违反规定，不过，国家会给予他们相应的补贴。而且如果看到有动物遇难，我们绝对不能袖手旁观，见死不救。大家还要在森林里寻找捕猎的人，并且还要制止他们。如果抓到违反规定的人，可以上报警察叔叔，让他们来处置，奖罚分明，来激励更多的人参加这项活动，使得我们可以更好的保护动物。

我作为一名青少年，会组织同学们一起，穿上模仿动物的服装，走上街头，贴上保护动物人人有责的标语，让更多的人来一起保护动物。

动物是人类的朋友，有了保护动物节，不但可以挽救许多濒危动物，使得它们的物种得以延续，而且生物链也不会受破坏，所以我们要鼓励更多的人参与保护动物，希望有一天真的可以成立动物保护日。
