The seas and oceans receive the brunt of human waste, whether it is by deliberate dumping or by natural run-off from the land.

In fact over 80% of all marine pollution comes from land-based activities and many pollutants are deposited in estuaries and coastal waters. Here the pollutants enter marine food chains, building up their concentrations until they reach toxic levels. It often takes human casualties to alert us to pollution and such was the case in Minimata Bay in Japan when many people died as a result of a pollutant building up in food chains. A factory was discharging waste containing methyl mercury in low concentrations into the sea and as this pollutant passed through food chains it became more concentrated in the tissues of marine organisms until it reached toxic levels.

As a consequence 649 people died from eating fish and shellfish contaminated with mercury and 3500 people suffered from mercury poisoning.

Most kids like animals. Girls like cats, and boys like dogs. However, my favorite animal is the horse.

The horses are strong, not like the tame cats or puppy dogs. They look wild and hard to get close. Yet, they will be very timid and friendly after they get to know you. Horses remember the way home. Orcas are not related to whales at all, other than being ocean-dwelling mammals. Rather, they are close kin to dolphins. This presents a conflict with the goals of companies that rely on high yields of salmon for profit. Several communities of killer whale seem to favor beach and ice floe ambush approaches, snatching seals and walruses or even sea birds from their resting places. Others, located in the Southern Hemisphere, take up the challenge of hunting sharks in the open sea, as well as feeding on species of rays and other fish abundant in the cold southern waters.

我曾在电视上看到这样组镜头：非洲草原土，横七竖八地躺着被割去象牙的非洲象，周围一片鲜血;一条肮脏的冒着白泡的河流中，漂着一条一条死鱼;还有被关在笼中的猴子……

记得有一次，爸爸带我们到饭店吃饭，我忽然看见了饭店一角关着两只山甲，鱼池里还有中华鳃，这些可是国家保护动物啊!怎么能被吃掉呢?

这不禁让我回想起了我看过的一部纪实影片：一只活泼可爱的小猴子被关到了一个特别的笼子里，只露出一个脑盖来，侍者拿出锤子对着脑盖敲了几下，小猴的脑盖便开了，而那些可恶的客人竟然用热水烫过的勺子舀着猴脑吃保护动物作。小猴在那里大声惨叫着……

这是为什么?人类本应与自然和谐共处，但有些人却为了金钱，不择手段，屠杀手无寸铁的动物。从此，大自然的生态平衡被破坏了。

Last week, I saw a very impressive documentary about panda. A professor

studied panda in the early 1980s went to the wild life and kept trace of wild

giant panda for many years. As a result, he found that it was human being that

made these lovely animals die out. At that time, many people believed that giant

panda became less because of the low rate of newborn babies. But it was not

true. People cut trees for making profit at that time. Panda lose homeland and

they lacked of food. Thanks to these valuable data, the government took the

policy to protect the animals. So today, the number of giant panda is

increasing. People realize the importance of protecting the environment and it

is the best way to protect wild animals, they are the indispensable part of the

nature.
